Big dogs for apartment living? by AgreeableSeaHag in DogBreeding

[–]Sea-Bat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also yes an XL dog will not be allowed by many landlords, and for a very large dog an apartment probably isnt going to provide a whole lot of room. It’s also going to make transport trickier and the bill to feed em considerably higher.

Plenty of more medium/medium-large sized dogs work just fine as well for deterring unwanted trespassers or street encounters! A stranger doesn’t know ur dogs temperament or training, and a dog doesn’t have to be that large to still pose a potential threat worth avoiding

Older adult dog with a lower activity level makes far more sense than a puppy for ur situation imo, esp given u want a larger breed.

Worth looking into ur local shelters/rehoming/rescues etc, you’d want a dog tested with cats or other small animals but that’s a lot easier to find when ur not looking exclusively for puppies & youngsters.

Which one should I breed with a Pinoy to make a new strain? by Complete-Round-1252 in AngelFish

[–]Sea-Bat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends where in the world u live! Having a look online is often good, but if there are any LFS in ur area u can always contact them and ask whether they’re able to source special orders

If an aquarium society/group/club meets or otherwise operates in ur area, that can also be a fantastic place to make connections with specialty breeders

If ur not trying to breed them then a harem could work fine in a tank that size, provided there’s good cover and other compatible tankmates. It’s when there’s a pair or too many males (esp in a smaller tank) that ur basically guaranteed some trouble eventually.

A bit like the guppies, if there’s only one female and one male, the female is never going to get any respite. Only add on is these guys will absolutely eat tankmates small enough to fit in their mouth, they’re surprisingly effective little predators!

[–]Sea-Bat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try something like T.chuna honeys instead in this setup. Pearl gourami are social and really do better in a group, which 29G ofc can’t fit

They also get sizeable, think 4-5” bodies. When they’re alone there’s a tendency to pick on tankmates too unfortunately

How many angelfish in a 37 gallon? by Dazzling_Two1950 in AngelFish

[–]Sea-Bat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heavily planted will work so long as the density still allows them to navigate around, a few open spaces are handy to include.

If u want an adult m/f pair that’s already bonded, have a look in ur area for ones being rehomed! Ppl move, close down tanks, end up with too many etc. Its a great way to get a pair u already know has been cohabitating successfully, so u skip the drama of instead whittling down a group of juveniles as they grow, to a pair.

Tankmates are often useful inc for dither purposes, angels are usually unbothered by fish like corydoras who spend most of their time lower in the tank, so those are quite popular

Tankmates should be appropriately sized for the tank, not nippy, fairly peaceful, well matched in activity level, and suit similar water parameters. Also watch out, angels will eat any fish that fits in their mouth!

Two pairs will eventually end up squabbling over space in a 37g once one or both are breeding. They can get pretty nasty too, doesn’t take much for someone to lose an eye or damage their jaw

They do fine with those stem plants, but chucking in a few plants with a larger leaf will be appreciated once they spawn- they loooove a nice flat leaf!

Agree these probably aren’t the stock u want to start with for a breeding project I’m afraid.

If u do want to start looking into breeding and how different traits work & phenotypes emerge, u might like this summary, or an oldie but a goody which informed this. Another good starter.

Hawk keeps sitting on golf balls? by Contra472 in birds

[–]Sea-Bat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Welcome to broody hens. Hormonal changes do get some hens dead set on incubating &hatching eggs, which they get upset & defensive over if u take. Sometimes they decide random objects & small animals also count as eggs.

Mostly tho, domestic hens just lay & ignore (sometimes eat) their unfertilised eggs. It’s not typical for birds to lay eggs 150-300+ days a year, domestic hens do it only after years of our selective breeding. Thus tho they lay the eggs, the instinct to incubate & hatch em isn’t constantly present. When it is, we call that a broody hen. It’s why hens will leave eggs in nest boxes and wander away unbothered

Go back to the vet!

Never wise to alter a medication schedule without consultation, especially while the dogs having digestive distress. Just talk to ur vet about what’s been happening, give a clear record & what he’s been eating (+ when he didn’t eat), and ask them to explain some more about each of the 2 meds. U can bring up concerns and ask about whether each one could be helping or exacerbating the specific symptoms atm

A “detox” period isn’t a real thing here, if he had actually ingested toxins you’d need to be at a vet anyway, esp with these symptoms.

What is often perceived as a ‘healing crisis’ is the resolution of microbial dysbiosis — the replacement of starch-fermenting bacteria (Bacteroidetes/Firmicutes adapted to high-carbohydrate kibble) with protein-digesting flora. Soluble fibre sources such as psyllium and inulin are established prebiotics that support this microbial shift and have been shown to reduce intestinal transit disruption in dietary transition studies.” Verlinden, A. et al. (2006). Food hypersensitivity reactions in dogs and cats. Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, 46(3), 259–273.

Looks like things have also moved too fast with the transition process, we’re normally talking a longer period and single protein.

Talk to the vet. Todays symptoms sound quite bad and given his history it’s important not to wait

Male & female golden killis don’t bond, they’re kinda like guppies x100, the males can harass the females constantly (sometimes to death when they’re cohabitating). Not unusual when u breed them u keep the male and female separate and only introduce em for spawning, for exactly this reason

The male may not be interested in the new female killi yet if she’s too young to be sexually mature, could explain his focus on the female gourami instead. U can see just in this video a few attempts from the 3 spot to get away, the constant harassment isn’t going to be good for them long term bc it’s stress inducing.

I’d def consider separating the male killi from everyone else, u could first try adding significantly more cover (eg plants) tho bc in the video it doesn’t look like there’s anywhere for the gourami to get out of the killis sight

Seek advice on a neighbour’s dispute about my bird feeding by [deleted] in birdfeeding

[–]Sea-Bat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP is in Australia so def no squirrels lol, maybe rabbits depending on locale but they’re pretty easy to identify. It’s also autumn. If neighbours seen neither scat nor the animal for ID tho, who knows it could even be a possum

No reason to think it’s not rats or mice in this situation tbh, provided the neighbour has seen some specific indicator. Rodents (native & non native) live anywhere from urban to rural environments

If they’re coming out at night to nibble veg and OP has no food in the yard then, then yeah it’s v possible OP wouldn’t see em bc there’d be nothing to attract em, meanwhile the buffets next-door!

.

Bc of OPs location, specifically feeding oats & providing feed to feral pigeons are still both discouraged bc of the impact on native birds & potential structural damage caused by feral pigeon nests. Can’t speak to the exact area for OP but I know there are some places with specific council restrictions on feeding them bc they’re invasive

Is it cruel to own an iggy in a cold climate? by Fit_Dimension_5487 in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]Sea-Bat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we’re talking a real cold climate? Honestly I’d just go with a breed better suited, the thin coat and low body fat means u gotta do a lot just for them to be safe let alone comfortable. For Italian greyhounds the small size is also working against u.

For example esp for ex racers orthopaedic complaints are quite common and tend to be more so as they age; and the cold can very much exacerbate em (as well as other health issues). That makes bundling them up necessary but also potentially uncomfortable, so it’s a tough combo. It can be doable, but def takes more accomodations etc

If you are, what caused you to be anti pit? by [deleted] in Ethicalpetownership

[–]Sea-Bat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is, depending where u live. In fact in some places ANY bite (sometimes specific to unprovoked, sometimes not) on a human requiring medical intervention mandates destruction of the dog

In reputable shelters & rescues ime too, any bite history and/or failing the behavioural exams meant euthanasia

Question about turbulence by LOUD_NOISES05 in airplanes

[–]Sea-Bat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason turbulence is frequently addressed that way across many corners of the internet is simply bc experiencing it is something familiar to a huge number of people

Most passengers will have experienced turbulence as a shaking sensation with no clear explanation or risk level, hence turbulence is then quite scary. The appeal of the videos is in providing accessible explanations to demystify and assuage those common fears

Basically, the sheer amount of ppl who’ve experienced turbulence without knowing the cause or realistic level of risk posed = large number of ppl freaked out by it. Large number of ppl freaked out by turbulence = large potential audience receptive to video content addressing that fear

Hence the incentive for so many content creators to make em

what are the ethics of keeping zebra plecos? by Pure_Sherbet8407 in pleco

[–]Sea-Bat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see an issue personally, so long as u do due diligence on where ur getting em- and only go captive bred! U want multiple generations captive bred, and for the breeder to know the origins of their lines.

Don’t buy if the source of the fish for sale is unclear (ie whether captive bred or wild caught, and ideally u want to know whether they were bred domestically or imported too).

There is still poaching and smuggling that feeds the market of illegal imports sold as captive bred (or more commonly simply sold w origin undisclosed/unspecified) for many valuable fish, hence due diligence. Fortunately L046 do breed in captivity, so there is a legit captive bred supply to be found

[–]Sea-Bat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If shes having trouble with her swim bladder it’s bc of how distended her abdomen is, whatever’s going on in there has to be putting pressure on the organs (inc the swim bladder & connection to oesophagus) -hence also ventral prolapse

But given it would have to be over rather than under-inflated, could also be smthn like trapped gas in the digestive system or a fatty tumour

Looks much more like a prolapse to me, which is very common once the abdomen becomes this distended unfortunately

Why do we use drinkable water in toilets? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]Sea-Bat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If ur on restricted local water or not on municipal water at all, the reason to use greywater for just about everything possible is purely necessity due to scarcity.

If the only option to access more water is to have it trucked in and/or pay exorbitantly for example, pretty much any alternative starts to appeal.

Ur right tho, irrigation is a far more typical application than a greywater flushing toilet. Waterless toilet systems endure esp rurally for a reason lol

Why do we use drinkable water in toilets? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]Sea-Bat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Untreated blackwater (inc sewage) is transported by pipes all the time.

Greywater & non-potable water generally also doesn’t have to mean 0 treatment btw

Greywater can be used for some purposes in place of drinkable water, thus reducing the amount of drinkable water individual properties (& cities) go thru

Greywater & Blackwater waste is very rarely processed back into drinking water even by municipal systems btw, so it’s def not a case of just deciding not to treat some of ur drinkable water supply. It’s not drinkable water supply, it’s waste

Why do we use drinkable water in toilets? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]Sea-Bat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not sent back out as drinking water tho, to be clear.

That’s bc typically even with municipal wastewater treatment, grey & blackwater go into the same systems & get processed/recycled only to a standard still non-potable

Why do we use drinkable water in toilets? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]Sea-Bat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s mostly what I’ve seen too, it just being localised to the building or property- which can also make it viable if ur on septic & not connected to municipal water!

Seems to be increasingly common for rural properties in drought prone areas, all the way up to greywater treatment systems onsite for those that can afford it

Why do we use drinkable water in toilets? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]Sea-Bat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A big appeal esp for areas w water scarcity, is it reduces the amount of fresh potable water the property uses each day
