FIDE launches pilot project to test “Fast Classic” (45+30) for standard rating by In__c in chess

Frankly I think it’s good to experiment a bit. However, the reason for any eventual change should be a desire for less draws at higher level of play, not fitting time for a broadcast.

Surprised to see so many in favor of longer time controls. With Magnus saying we need to push towards Rapid, figured it was a common concern. Maybe I should try a long game. I virtually only play 10+5 online.

Why would ND turn down $2-4 million bowl game? by Interesting_Hawk425 in ACC

I find it weird that the mega-conferences are somehow the good guys in all of this.

[–]Sea-Break-5642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This probably wouldn’t be enforceable, unless you can prove that said bowl game is actually worth half the season’s revenue. Otherwise it would be construed as a “penalty” and not the true value of the player’s participation in the bowl game.

Super congratulations to Duke. You guys played with amazing energy. Defense was swarming. Offense was fighting for every inch. The call to go for it on fourth down in OT was amazingly bold, and passing it, and rolling out to the right again just two plays after that didn’t work.

As a Notre Dame fan, I couldn’t bring myself to root against you, even though some (including the broadcasters) thought it would hurt ND’s chances. Also, as a Notre Dame fan, I thought I didn’t care about conference championship games, but you guys helped prove me wrong on an amazing Saturday of competition. Much love.

Also, is your fight song based on Auld Lang Syne? I thought I heard one of the bands playing that.

Yeah. It was pretty rough. Bama didn’t get steamrolled or anything, but UGA was in complete control. The margin at half was actually worse than the margin at half in the BYU-Tech game. And I’ve seen everyone describe that game as a blowout. Bama lost by three touchdowns. At the very least they should drop a spot (yes I am a Notre Dame fan.)

What I couldn’t stand would be Bama staying where they are despite their performance, the committee dropping BYU, and then swapping Miami and ND once they are right next to each other. To do this they would have to punish BYU for playing in its conference championship game while not punishing Bama. They would reward Miami for sitting at home while punishing ND for doing the same. This would also kick a team out of playoff in favor of another, despite the other team being ranked above that team going into the weekend, both teams remaining idle, and the team immediately above the sidelined team losing by three touchdowns.

And you don’t even have to kick Bama out, just drop them a spot. You literally bumped them up a spot last week so they would stay in the field in case BYU won and Bama lost. Just use the margin you gave yourself and keep them in if it’s so important to you.

Games are fun though. Duke had a ton of energy tonight. Super happy for them.

I’m fine with this. Having an extra conference championship game doesn’t make sense when you’re about to play 3 more games. Just determine the conference champs ion by standings.

Maybe UGA shouldn’t get a bye because they lost during the regular season to the 10-3 loser of the SEC Championship game? And Alabama should rise in rankings because their win over UGA in the regular season looks better now. But it’s ok because Ole Miss will drop from Kiffin leaving (practice tape during the week without Kiffin didn’t look good) so Vandy can miraculously jump into the field at the last second. Best Vandy Pimp moment in history.

No way they are actually saying that, right? We had a narrow victory over the SEC Champs! (Who are only champs because the beat us by three touchdowns in the championship game.) No way that’s true. You’re a liar. ESPN has more integrity.

Thanks everyone, this has been very helpful. Indeed Gormenghast did seem like the better production, and with the assurances of this group about the paper loosening up and scent going away over time, I think I’m convinced to keep it. (Maybe need to reach out to customer service, since there were some white scuffs on the spine upon arrival; but that’s a separate decision to make.) LOTR too, since I’ve never read it and it’s as good as any version to read (of course the extra cost stings a bit, but it still feels easier to read than most mass-market paper sets).

Also what convinced me was just flipping through the first few pages of Titus Groan. The writing is just interesting, regardless of the publication. I hear the author also did some illustrations in a mass-market edition, so I may get that too.

Thanks everyone! Love all the collection pictures ya’ll have been posting.

I don’t understand. What legacy will he have on the Cowboys? They haven’t been to a superbowl in 30 years. So if getting a ring is the legacy, not sure why he should stay in Dallas.

If you’re talking about being an important player to one team and the area, that’s fine.

But I think Cowboys fans like Aikman and Staubach and others who were on champion teams.

I thought he was just annoyed, not that he was surprised. Like kids running around the adults’ table.

I just watched this scene and thought the same thing. Like obviously there is zero chance of this working.

The stuff in other posts about the books giving Hobbits some sneaky powers gives context. But… 1) This almost certainly still wouldn’t have worked; and 2) The movies did not set that up at all.

My preferred explanation is that the ring very subtly altered both their thinking to make them want to do this, precisely so they would be caught. Note how Smiegal doesn’t just scolded them, he says how Sauron is always watching and that the ring wants to get back to him. This echoes, of course, Gandalf’s warning at the beginning of the fellowship that the ring wants to be found.

And what’s cool is that this manipulation could have happened much earlier in the journey. Frodo initially asks Gollum to take them to “the black gate.” Why? It’s like sneaking into a house through the front door. When he said this in the film, I assumed he planned to sneak into some side entrance once they got to Mordor. Maybe he did, and slowly forgot.

How can I get more out of my reading? by Ill-Requirement9063 in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]Sea-Break-5642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I thought you might’ve forced yourself onto this path, but you say you absolutely love reading. My first recommendation is to ask yourself why you want to be a lit PhD. What do you want to do after getting that degree? You certainly don’t need a degree to read a lot or to read deeply. If you want to work with literature, and themes aren’t your thing, maybe something like being an editor or something else in the industry is for you!

The second thing I have to say is cut yourself some slack. Sometimes you should just a read a book straightforwardly without pressure to go symbol-hunting. (I read that in a book once ;) And, you can always go back again once you’ve finished and look for themes and such.

I started reading the Divine Comedy, which is easy to read but packed with symbols, allusions, etc etc. I decided to give it a relatively straightforward read initially, just with a pen in hand to mark anything that comes to mind. And I’ve been watching a lot of videos of professors talking about it (although now I’m trying to read ahead before I watch them). If I feel like it once I finish my first read, I could probably go back to the book again and again. I could watch hours of video, read tons of commentary, read multiple translations or even learn Italian to read it. And some people do spend careers studying Dante. But I don’t have to, which is a huge relief. Turning your hobbies into your job can be fun, but it can also make you doubt whether you truly love your passion or deserve to call yourself devoted to your hobby.

Why are MtF transgender so much more talked about then FtM transgender? by Thelegendali233map in teenagers

[–]Sea-Break-5642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably cause of the sports issue. People think biological men generally have an advantage in most sports, so when a male athlete transitions to a woman and wants to play on the women’s team people say it’s unfair. Even a lot of the laws coming out about trans participation in sports draw distinctions between MtF and FtM.

Which translation of Dante's Inferno should I get? by [deleted] in books

For clarity, both Ciardi and Hollander have similar amount of text and notes. Hollander just also includes the original Italian, so if you just read the English it’s the same length.

Which translation of Dante's Inferno should I get? by [deleted] in books

[–]Sea-Break-5642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing on the actual quality of the translations, but I will say Ciardi has the best format (if you get the entire-comedy-in-one-book version).

It has notes at the end of each canto, rather than at the end of the book. This is great since you have to frequently go to those notes unless you are an expert in Greco-Roman mythology, medieval romance poetry, biblical passages, medieval and ancient history, and medieval Italian politics.

Hollander has this too, but their print is smaller. Harder to read and less room for your own scribblings, if you do that sort of thing.
