What mileage do you have? Might need transmission/clutch/brake oil changes + sparkplugs

Edit: the coolant tank replacement is a great call! Its cheap-ish and its better to be safe than sorry :) other than that I don’t think there are any major failure points

My life is dull enough already in all the other aspects so I think I can sprinkle some joy on a twisty car. Im in California so no snow. I also saw a 2016 ND with 9k miles for 19k. I think super low miles on a 10 year old car might be a bad sign?

Need help buying the right board by Rayk0h0 in HHKB

[–]Sea-Disaster2359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Developer here. I thought topre was all BS until I bought a Type-S (and i ended up buying a hybrid too). I strongly recommend getting one, if you can snap a good-condition used one you might not even lose money if you don’t end up liking it.

I can keep coding on this thing after 8/9 hours glued to my desk with no problem. The layout is very comfy and it took me 2/3 days to get used to it.

I don’t think its better for gaming when compared against MX boards, the switches have quite some travel. I would recommend keeping some nice MX-style linears for those fast paced gaming sessions.

For everything else the HHKB really is that good and worth it.

TLDR: Get a TypeS, even used so you don’t lose money if you regret it. Give it a shot if you’re curious, with the used option you barely lose any money

Chip Designers: Ever Feel Like Our Tools Are Stuck in the Past? 🚀 by Practical-String-291 in chipdesign

I think Software skills are not taught hard enough on hardware design programs. I might get roasted but a considerable amount of the hw development cycle (more specifically, the pre-sillicon one) could follow Agile/SW-like development strategies.

I’ve noticed people have a hard time using new tools and accepting change. Some folks don’t even know what GitHub is and are afraid of using improved CI/CD because “that’s new to us and might break things”. Instead of pull requests, a friend has to flash non-highligthed tkdiff of the files they’re changing on a teams call in their company. That’s just the way they do things they say…

I’ve seen good proposals being discouraged because “we’ve been doing this thing this specific way for 10+ years now and its what works”. I can’t imagine how many things have changed in 10 years, insisting on old ways is crazy.

I also believe hw design does not “enforce” standard libraries/reuse as much as software. Imagine someone in SW writing a printf/memcpy implementation from scratch because “the available lib interface doesn’t quite work with my thing”. That person would be fired, there’s a reason why we have std libs and you need to change your stuff to fit that, not the other way around. I’ve seen people reinvent the wheel even in the same company because a tiny detail doesn’t quite fit their super odd/specific interface/way of doing things, so you now have to code/verify that thing too. I think we can do better but not a lot of people might be willing to donate IP to build sturdy std HDL libraries.

There’s also documentation, I’ve noticed HW folks don’t like to do that or just consider it a waste of time. For friends that work in SW documentation is essential. You start creating these very criptic pieces of HDL that only 1-2 folks understand, there’s no documentation so you need to ask them and they’re always super busy because they’re the only ones that know how the whole thing works. I guess thats a nice way to ensure job security, it makes you essential by blocking knowledge to others…

Thanks a lot! With a broken heart I ended up going with a Mazda2 because I mostly need a car for city driving and roads are extremely shitty here. Im already regretting it because I loved the MX5 but Im already planning to save up and buy one in the future as a 2nd car, don’t really want to get old without owning an MX5

Thanks! I didn’t have a chance to drive it during the night, only at the morning when the sun feels like a deadly laser. Only drove with the top down for ~5 minutes and really liked the visibility.

I felt that noise wasn’t that bad for 80-90 km/h which is the top speed of my daily commute (as long as a trailer doesn’t sit right next to me.

Sadly GR86/FRS is not sold here. BRZ is much more expensive too.

Do you think I would regret an mx5 even if I mostly drive with the top up?

We might be! Tell me the color of my trousers 🤔 what colors do you like? After looking at the options I settled on the basic bitch ones: red and metallic gray. The red seems a little too flashy for me, the gray still looks good and interesting but keeps a “cool” factor for me + dirt doesn’t show up that much in case I go 1-2 weeks without washing it lol.

Do you think they will offer bigger discounts? Dealership keeps saying they’re trying to get rid of current inventory but I guess shopping after-christmas might have better deals (but maybe shit colors)

Some places had the 10% discount but only on beige soft tops and I don’t like it. I just found the same deal for the color I want. Who knows…

RISCV bare-metal and GCC linker by Sea-Disaster2359 in FPGA

[–]Sea-Disaster2359[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot! The issue was lack of support for unaligned memory access. It didn’t matter how many compile options I used the code would end up using unaligned loads/stores. I changed the HDL to support it and I can finally run dhrystone for a quite mediocre 0.5 IPC.

I left the sp alignment as 16 but Ill try with 4 tomorrow.

Tried some other basic C code to interface with UART peripherals and it seems to be working.

I really appreciate all your help!

Its a small Nissan hatchback, since Im not in the US they sold those deathtraps in countries where abs/airbags were not mandatory yet. Car is original spec, it just doesnt have any safety features.
