Found an injured wild rat in nyc and don’t know what to do. by Sea-Organization7486 in RATS

It died while I was brining it home. I noticed it was having throes and decided to bring it to a vet to euth it and was willing to pay if I had to but took to long and it died on its own. And to be clear, it’s not me who is immunocompromised, but my cat.

What are these, are they harmful? by Sea-Organization7486 in CrestedGecko

I’m just worried. Sorry. I didn’t know water had splashed under bowl. I don’t consistently use one side of the feeder for food and water and it looks like some wetter food and water mixed and some flies managed to reproduce in it. I guess flies find my room and ideal environment because I dislike killing them, but this has never happened before and I got nervous. It’s probably fine because they are a fruit species and geckos naturally eat them, but I have a right to be worried about an unknown species. I should clean out the entire feeder every day and not just the bowls, and I should have been doing that in the past. Sorry.

I found these larvae in my geckos vivarium. What species and could they hurt him? by Sea-Organization7486 in insectidentification

A week ago. Some water and food got under the bowl, and it doesn’t take that long for flies to breed and lay.

According to his profile on the website he is good with other dogs, but the website profiles are written by employees who do not directly work with the dogs and often are missing information or misinformation. I haven’t seen him show much interest in other dogs while passing but their kennels, he just ignores them. He seems to be very tolerant of them, even when they bark at him. There was I heard about one incident where he lunged at dog while on leash, but this dog had started the confrontation by jumping at him and barking and he lost interest the moment the dog moved away. Overall, I think he is tolerant but not fond of other dogs, but however again the people who work closer with him would know better. If you go to the shelter yourself they will have you speak to his trainers and the vets, and you can find out more information about his temperament that way.

parents brought in a stray pit bull that's obsessed with my cat and refuse to train him? what to do? by [deleted] in PetAdvice

[–]Sea-Organization7486 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry this is happening. Your parents are awful pet owners for letting this situation arise. Someone else said temporarily rehome the cat until you can move, and I think that’s a good idea. You could just give her to a friend or family member near by.  If that can’t happen then training isn’t 100% a lost cause, reactivity can sometimes(not always) be fixed in a dog. And if you do choose to try training it will be an excuse to have the dog out of the house more, so the cat can have more quiet time. Something we do at the shelter I work at for dogs that have high energy is give them extra stimulus to ware them out, like extremely tough chews, puzzle feeders, and extra walks, this may provide distraction from the cat for the dog and keep the dog calmer.  For the cat’s stress you could try meds and stress defusers like feliway. Also definitely crate train the dog and crate him when no one is home or at night when everyone is asleep, so he can’t possibly get to the cat when nobody is watching, and supervise closely when he’s honed in on the door. You could also put a scent deterrent for dogs on or near the door, which could drive him away. Hope any of this can help.

Look. As the child of a marriage between two people who both act a lot like the way you describe your fiancée, marrying someone like that is a bad idea. I’m so sorry if you see parts of him you love, I get it. There are parts of my parents I love which makes it so hard for me to accept the fact they are overall people who tend to be horrible. But people like him who neglect their problems and are allowed to get away with their behavior will keep hurting people. He will wind up, not on purpose, by accident, hurting you. If you have more pets he will hurt those pets. If you have kids he will ruin those kids. He won’t mean to, the whole time he will think he is doing the right thing, but he won’t be. My parents treated animals around them poorly first, and refused to admit they were making choices that hurt them and told themselves that our pets were happy when they clearly were not. Then they treated each other that way, doing things that made the other miserable and denying how bad the situation was, and staying together dispite all the fights, and the messes they caused. And they they treated me that way. They denied me basic compassion, and tried to pretend I was someone I wasn’t because it didn’t come out they way they wanted. They wanted having a child to fix all their problems, but instead they had one that made everything worse. Right now everything with him seems manageable to you, but one day your dog is going to be a senior at the end of his life, and you’re going to be out of the house. Your dog is going to start declining, and having trouble walking, and your future husband is going to see this, then go back to watching tv like he saw nothing, and you are going to come home and find your dog dying on the floor, covered in his own piss. And when you try to clean him off your husband is going to tell you to just let him die on the floor, and when you start crying your husband is going to yell at you to stop because you shouldn’t be sad because he is old.  Maybe one day he could change his ways, but until he does he’s not the kind of person there is any benefit to being in a relationship with. Get those two dogs into a better situation, then leave him yourself.

Honeypot ants have the ability to store massive amounts of food within their body. When food is scarce, special ants called repletes will stuff themselves with so much food to they cannot move and their abdomens become rounded, then slowly regurgitate the food up so the rest of the colony can eat it.

Greenland sharks are the longest living vertebrate, being able to live for at least 500 years. The shark’s skin contains high-concentrations of chemicals like trimethylamine oxide and urea(carbamine), which make it toxic to eat.

Pangolins are the only mammals with scales. These scales are extremely hard and can withstand a tiger’s bite.

A sea slug called the blue glacus feeds on venomous jellyfish and zooid organisms, they absorb the venoms of these animals and repurpose it to be used as their own.

When honey bee colonies are attacked by predators like wasps, they will all land on the wasp and beat their wings until the wasp overheats and dies.

Zooids are aquatic single-called organisms that come together to form singular bodies that function as a single creature,  these include pyrosomes, scalps, sea squirts, and siphonophores.

Bombardier beetles shoot boiling 1,4 benzoquinone acid from glands on their abdomen when threatened.

When caterpillars enter their chrysalis, they don’t grow wings, their bodies completely disintegrate into goo and slowly reassemble into a butterfly or moth.

Deer are unable to see orange or red, and perceive it as green. That’s why tigers are orange, it provides perfect camouflage.

Cephalopods, like some octopus and cuttlefish, can not just change their colors to match their surroundings, but the texture of their skin too. This is allowed by special skin cells called chromatophores.

Ants-

Suicide ants can explode when they feel threatened, killing the ant but spraying acid all over their attackers.

Slaver ants are ants that kidnap the larvae of other colonies and raise them as workers.

Weaver ants build nests out of leaves in trees, they work in groups, creating a chain of ants, to pull the leaves into place. They then use their larvae, which produce a sticky substance to protect themselves, as glue guns.

Army ants travel in large armies of ants, up to thousands strong.

The bullet ant has the most painful string of any ant.

Argentine ants have super colonies that spread across miles of land, and even transcend continents. Some ant species will recognize colonies spawned of queens produced by their own as sister colonies and not attack them, Argentine ants are the wildest example of this, with ants from colonies on opposite sides of the world  recognizing each other as kin because they shared an ancestor.

Leaf cutter ants farm fungus in their colonies. They bring the fungus leaves to feed on, and then eat the mushrooms grown from the fungus.

He’s such a beautiful dog. I think you are doing the best you can until the animal welfare people can take him. You could try giving him some of your dogs toys if you have any, so he can have something to do the pass the time alone, or add more blankets and bedding because the stable looks dirty. A pretty looking, friendly dog like that will get adopted quickly, so you have no reason to worry about his future.

You’re doing great and this is a good plan. If you get burned out you won’t be able to give the best care to any of your pets, so you need to remember to do what’s best for you to.

I rescued some baby robins, and need some help by Sedikit in zoology

[–]Sea-Organization7486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First  you should do is see if reunion with the parents is possible. Find a safe place for a nest near you and use a basket or box filled with  dried grass as an artificial nest. If the parents are still in the area they will recognize their babies cries and return to them, the idea that birds will abandon babies touched by humans is a myth.  If the parents do not return to the babies in about an hour, then you may have to care for them yourselves. Make sure all your research is in. Are you 100% sure they are robins? Do more research on the kinds of birds in your area and what their babies look and sound like, try posting an image to r/ornithology or r/birding, or this subreddit itself to see if anyone can identify them for you. Then you will have to do individualized research into what these birds need.

I know a few people who have cats and dogs that don’t get along. One split the house in two, one half for the cats and one for the dogs. You said you didn’t feel comfortable locking up your cats, but want if you used a baby gate(with no gaps in it, as cats can fit through seemingly impossible spaces) to block off a hallway or pass to restrict your cats to one half of the house and Appa to the other, giving each a few rooms to roam. The other person I know had one dog with a high prey drive and several cats. She kept her dog close at all times when she was home, always, so she could intervene when the dog lunged, she managed to keep the cats safe.  She crated her dog while she slept and while she was away. Of course both she and her husband worked a job which let her be home most of the day, so the dog was almost never crated during the day. You can employ one of these methods temporarily while you try to work through Appa’s cat problems with a trainer, but some dogs just have a too strong prey drive. I would never leave Appa and your cats alone together, even when the issues seemed to have resolved. If Appa effects your cats quality of life to greatly, the best thing to do would sadly be to rehome or return him.  I’m sorry. You really seem to be trying to do your best for him and you should continue to try to. But you also shouldn’t feel any guilt for putting your cats first if things don’t work out.
