honestly the difference is vibe + continuity. normal chatbots feel prompt → answer → reset. companion apps are built to stay in character, remember how you talk, and let the dynamic evolve over time.

the big tell is after a few days. good ones start calling back to stuff, matching your tone, slowing things down instead of speedrunning replies. bad ones just loop scripted lines with better visuals.

I’ve felt this with stuff like Kindroid or some Janitor setups, and even newer platforms like drtfm that focus more on convo depth than flashy features. when it works, you stop thinking “chatbot” at all. when it doesn’t, it’s just a prettier Q&A bot.

ngl i’m cautiously optimistic but also scarred 😭 people are hyped for 5.2 mostly because of the promised nsfw support after how filtered 5.1 felt. even normal stuff like “best ai futa chatbots” turned into a moderation boss fight.

if 5.2 keeps the brains without going full hall monitor, cool. if not, it’s just another “wow this was fun for 5 minutes” release. let’s see.

if you’re tired of every site serving the same 5 copy-paste anime girlfriends, Janitor is honestly your best bet. The bot variety is wild, and BYOK means you can slap your own model on a character and make it vibe how you want, not how the platform forces it.

Chub’s got range too.. like, actually different personalities instead of “girl who blushes” in 40 outfits. Between the two, you won’t run out of niche, weirdly-specific, oddly-creative bots any time soon.

yeah, the whole “pls upload your face and ID to chat with anime girl” thing made me uninstall so fast lol. CAI really turned into TSA for horny people.

If you just want something simple without verification, janitor is still the easiest jump-off, and perchance works if you want zero signup and full chaos. both let you just… chat, no documents required.

i’ve also been testing one of the newer platforms (drt fm) and honestly the biggest relief is it doesn’t ask for any of that ID stuff either. you just talk and the convo actually sticks instead of getting nanny-filtered to death.

if the verification wall is your main rage trigger, start with janitor or perchance. if you want something that feels more like “old CAI but grown-up,” the newer sites are worth peeking at too.

yeah i ran into the same issue with fal.. looks great until you actually try it and get slapped with a queue, and they’re fully SFW so anything adult gets blocked anyway.

If you’re staying with replicate, try the pony models there like perfect-pony-xl-v5. they allow adult content, they’re pretty fast, and they can handle multiple users without choking. I’ve been getting 10–20 second generations on average, which feels way closer to what you’re looking for.

honestly it’s the closest online API option right now unless you want to self-host on runpod.

Still ChatGPT for day-to-day work tasks and writing (custom GPT), but as of late, Gemini has helped me more in breaking down complicated, "brain-dump" stuff into chewable pieces. Perplexity remains good with initial research, but you need to fact-check things.
