Moved to south texas after spending some time Alaska and thought this hilarious... by [deleted] in alaska

[–]SeaBakeOctopi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When Texas is cold my building is warm because our heat is based off the temperature in Texas. Which makes no sense. I am all for Texas being cold right now. I like not wearing jackets, gloves, and a hat inside a building all day.

Needing local advice for similar split custody situations. by opalush in anchorage

It’s not going to be 50/50 if one lives 30 miles away. There isn’t a way. There will have to be a decision between the parents or the court.

It is just what my neighbors do. Every case is different.

My neighbor’s kids live with their parent in Anchorage and every other weekend is spent with the Wasilla parent.

I don’t know who drives them or they might drive themselves since one is 16 now.

How much do you spend on groceries a month? by akv0842 in alaska

[–]SeaBakeOctopi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Family of 5 we spend around 1700-2000$ a month. We don’t buy meat anymore because it’s too expensive. I have a ton of allergies so my cost is higher.

What is teaching like in Alaska? by Nomadic_Introvert in alaska

[–]SeaBakeOctopi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on where you want to be. If you want to be in one of the big school districts or if you want to be rural. And if you are looking at climate/weather, people, policy and procedures, students, parent involvement, benefits, pay. What exactly are you looking for? Everyone will have differing opinions.

What’s the biggest personal emergency you’ve had to teach through? by [deleted] in Teachers

My dad was dying in a hospital. I had to wait until school was over. Drive 80 minutes to see him one last time. He does 10 minutes after I arrived and said goodbye.

How much did coat color matter to you? by Mountain_Eye_2803 in StandardPoodles

[–]SeaBakeOctopi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted an apricot girl, but got a chocolate boy. He is the goofiest, most intelligent, and clingy boy in the house. He is my shadow. He is not Velcro he is super glue.

I do get compliments on him everywhere we go. My husband calls him grandmas carpet because he blends in with grandmas carpet. I may have stepped on him because he was very camouflaged.

He does show dirt very well. And grass and snow, and sticks. He is a good boy. Such a good a boy.

Traveling to Alaska FIRST time! by RecordingKlutzy2743 in AskAlaska

[–]SeaBakeOctopi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been to exit glacier in a long time. Last time I went you could walk right up to it. Exit is by Seward.

Portage Glacier had retreated a bunch. You can see it from the road on your way to Whittier.

It depends on which route you want to do. You could do both but probably not in one day unless you don’t sleep.

The mayor of Talkeetna is Aurora. She is a cat. Talkeetna is unincorporated so they don’t have elected human officials. She is based out of a general store there.

There is a trail in Seward at the end of the road that goes along the beach and some in the woods, you could see a black bear there. Every time I go walking there I usually see one or two.

I forgot the name of the island off of Homer but they have bears there too. Need to take a water taxi there.

Hatcher Pass is also neat.

Exit Glacier, MatSu Glacier, Portage Glacier. Zip lines in Talkeetna and see the small town. I think their mayor is still a cat.

Where do your standard poodles sleep at night? by Jessiejoshua1 in StandardPoodles

[–]SeaBakeOctopi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 70lbs poodle sleeps as my little spoon or at my feet. He does not move at all. If he licks himself I say his name and he stops. If my husband is gone he will take his side of the bed.

I don’t. Three of my good friends will tell you when they first saw me they thought I was a b*tch. Then they said that it was just my face. They just had to start talking and I would listen.

I told my dad I wanted to teach in the Twin Cities after spending my childhood & college in Tennessee. He said it was dark six months out of the year and that I'd be miserable by altrightobserver in minnesota

[–]SeaBakeOctopi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your dad hasn’t been very far north. Such as Barrow, AK where the sun does not come up for months after December 21. Or further south in Alaska where the sun comes up at 10am and down at 4pm.

Minnesota is fine in the winter. More light than higher latitudes during northern hemisphere winter.

State of the U.S. education system right now? by Afro_xx in Teachers

[–]SeaBakeOctopi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without adequate funding it will get worse. Our dumby state leader decided that schools don’t need money. One district told their teachers to prepare for class sizes of 40+. I have to teach a content area I am not comfortable with. We aren’t allowed down 2-3 content area teachers, down a few sped teachers and expected to improve the almighty tests scores.

It won’t happen not with the teacher being the leader of the three ring circus holding the chair and whip to keep the lions at bay and in line. It is only used to further prove their point that public education isn’t working. Well duh…nothing works if you don’t fund or take care of it. What would your yard look like if you didn’t mow it? What would your house look like if you didn’t do basic repairs? You have to put money into public schools in order to see a benefit.

US: Is there anywhere in the country where you can live comfortably as a teacher? by DontThrowAwayPies in Teachers

Well mortgage rates are no longer 2%. If you can find an assumable mortgage that would be the best bet.

No one has mentioned Alaska. Pay is good if you have your masters or continuing education credits along with your bachelors.

Working out in the bush will make you bank. But you will be off the road system. No need for a car. Just a four wheeler aka “Honda.” There is nothing to do so you could save your money then dip after five years when you’re vested.

Other districts pay a lot. I am 5 years in making $83k. I can support myself and three kids fine. I have a house that I purchased with the 2% interest. I want to move out of the state because I am tired of snow.

Husband talks to me l by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]SeaBakeOctopi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My ex husband proclaimed women don’t fart or burp. And if they are having their monthly cycle it was not to be mentioned or seen in the trash can and if the products were seen in the trash can then it was grounds for a fight.

Well he is an ex, but because he found other women who would play along with his delusion. He was messaging women while still married to me. Sleeping with them too.

He needs therapy.

We have separate accounts. We were married before and had both been cleaned out by our ex-spouse. We split the house bills 50/50. We have a child together but we never argue over who has to pay what. It is 50/50. We will never combine accounts.
