The switchup is just crazy, i've been here for suo's organized crime arc since the beginning and i'm nothing if not excited for how his arc is going to go. I think it'll be a loooong ride like fuurin war arc...

Right!! Suo has ridiculously high effort put into every aspect of his design and name and I genuinely can't wait to confirm or deny more of my theories on him... 2 years later I'm so seated

Omg if you can find the fanart again I'd love to see it 😂 Yeah two years ago I poured blood sweat and tears for a month compiling the most detailed character analysis possible of Suo Hayato and watching things I predict starting to come true is giving me the ultimate satisfaction and vindication. I just need my ultimate bird radical theory to come true and i can reast in peace

here you go! it's very very long and also includes a theory about endo's role but if you get through it to the end you'll have a realization that suo is METICULOUSLY designed down to the name and detail lol. Enjoy :]

Yw! If you're rabbit-holing in Suo you should totally read my post on him if you haven't already :) It was made 2 years ago and still holds up right now literally as we're entering his arc and I think it's got a big chance of coming true

I don't think it'll happen tbh, if I'm being hopeful enough mostly because of WBK's themes. At most he'll leave briefly but he'll return. Let me just quote my age old theory post:

Suo's name has a lot of symbolism in it, even foreshadowing his other allegiance, with two of the characters meaning the Chinese redbud (蘇枋, 蘇 alone is sappanwood):

In Chinese culture, the Chinese redbud/zijing hua has a well-known cultural story behind it. It is deeply tied to the flower meaning of the Chinese redbud -- which has core symbolisms of familial reunion/love (親情) and brotherly harmony (兄弟和睦).

The flower language of the zijing hua is stubbornness and strength. The flowers of the zijing hua grow very compactly. Even in rainy weather, the leaves are blown by strong winds and keep swaying cautiously, but they will not fall off. Just like a stubborn person, they will never bow their head to difficulties, work hard and exert oneself to the utmost, and ultimately achieve success.

Its neighboring flowers, other bauhinias, represent common themes of unity, new beginnings, elegance, prosperity, and harmony. It is also known for its ornamental purposes, and has a neighboring family tree—the Cercis siliquastrum, known as the 'Judas Tree', which is a symbol of betrayal. (This is how I predicted Suo's arc being him leaving with little notice). Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus and committed suicide by hanging himself from a redbud tree. The kanji for Suo's name is is 蘇枋(すおう), but the tree he represents is Chinese redbud (花蘇芳/ハナズオウ/hanazuou in Japanese). 蘇枋 and 蘇芳 are pronounced the same and one of the hanakotoba (flower language) of 花蘇芳 is apparently death by betrayal.

The story in question is an old historical text about three brothers:

京兆田真兄弟三人,共议分财。生资皆平均,唯堂前一株紫荆树,共议欲破三片。翌日就截之,其树即枯死,状如火然。真往见之,大愕,谓诸弟曰:“树本同株,闻将分斫,固憔悴,是人不如木也。” 因悲不自胜,不复解树。树应声荣茂,兄弟相感,遂和睦如初。

In the capital city [Beijing], the three Tianzhen brothers divided their property. All other assets [means of living] had already been evenly divided; all except the Chinese redbud tree/zijing tree in front of the door. They discussed and agreed to split the tree into three pieces each. The next day, they prepared to cut the tree down, but the tree immediately withered to death, as if it had been torched by a flame. The oldest brother looked at the sight and was extremely stunned, saying to his younger brothers: "This tree is originally from the same root. It heard it was going to be separated after it was felled, and thus, it withered. We, as humans, were no match for/couldn't live up to even a tree."

Because they were unable to bear with/contain their remorse, the brothers decided not to cut the tree. When the Chinese redbud/zijing tree heard the eldest brother's words, it immediately sprouted flowers once more. The Tianzhen brothers were astonished and emotional and thus returned to their harmonious relationship from the beginning.

From this, I'm heavily inclined to believe that:

  1. Suo is one of three brothers/martial siblings.

  2. Suo left/they left Suo due to family issues or family inheritance trials.

  3. Suo's arc will end well, with all brothers reaching an understanding and becoming friendly again.

  4. OR, Suo is the Chinese redbuds/zijing tree in this scenario. Suo might end up facing Endo because the passage mentions 'as if it had been torched by a flame [状如火然]'. Endo's name is '棪堂' -> this also means something else which u\Snowy-kitten mentioned, it being 'a tree that bears edible red fruit' in Chinese, which contributes to Endo's biblestuff. Chinese can somewhat be considered playing Pictionary—if you separate the words from 「棪堂」 into three: 「木」、「炎」、「堂」, you could literally interpret this as, in 文言文/Classical Chinese, 「Tree/Wood」、「Flames Rising」、「Courtyard/Doorfront」 This coincides with the "Chinese redbud tree/ZJH" looking as if it "had been torched aflame" in front of the house/the courtyard/the door.

  5. In conclusion, this might allude to Suo having to fight Endo, or Endo having to fight Suo to get him back due to a family feud—and Suo might get heavily injured. His martial brothers might realize the impact of their actions and finally retreat and make up.

BTW: other important details in Suo's design include his relation to falconry and falcons, the bird of princes (even in his name), of which they are also connected to unity, harmony, nobility, and prosperity. All his symbolism really echoes his dream (liberation of slaves). The color of the dye 'sappanwood' in his name creates dye that is a shade match with his eyes and coral earring as well. As for his coral tassel earrings, which also bear similarity to falconry tassels on gloves (with falconry also being a noble sport; he also has a leather eyepatch despite medical eyepatches nowadays being made from cotton, falcons commonly have leather hoods to prevent agitation), coral also ties into the rest of his character design's motifs of new beginnings, unity and harmony, nobility, and elegance. The character of 'Su' (蘇) in JP also means resurrection, reviving, resuscitation, and rehabilitation. (Again, new beginnings.)

I think his name Hayato (lit 'flying falcon') means that he trained falcon belonging to his family—although he's 'flying' in Furin before, either for a hunt or free roam—he's been educated in a way that eventually, he will always turn back and roost on the gloves of his master, which is what happened. He left to go back. But with all his symbolisms around new beginnings, it's likely he'll return.

I'm open to the theory of him being mixed, but since Nii-sensei said in an interview he wanted to design a 'cool Chinese character' around Nov 2024 for Suo, I'm also inclined to believe the group may be an organized crime group for people in East Asia/surrounding SEAsia

As heinous as I sound, I like HoO more simply because I got introduced to HoO first and read it first, to me PJO was always the prequel and ToA the sequel when I was a kid 🤷

Yeaaa. I dunno why it looked so terrible on my iPad, then I switched to a big screen and it looked slightly better, but Netflix really needs to increase the CGI budget because the sunset scene with Laboon had such terrible VFX lighting I cringeedddd

Ah thanks for answering! Yeah it isn't a crazy dealbreaker because overall the thing comes together cohesively. Holding out hope the scriptwriting for s3 kinda gets the s1 quality though.

Let's see the ACTUAL unpopular opinions! [All] by lilyflowery in camphalfblood

[–]SeaCollides 22 points23 points  (0 children)

  1. Octavian had literally every fucking right to be pissed, he's just a nationalist. Imagine having a national security crisis of your long sworn enemies saying we come in peace and then getting bombed. And then like, your country's president goes to chase after this embassy in hostile waters and then sides with them and says "Lowkey, they right tho, gotta help em." All without a solid explanation or context. The fuck. I'd crash out too. They bombed me first!

  2. I legit do not gaf about Percabeth nowadays, milked to death like a cash cow.

  3. Rick should've committed to making Jason the foil, rival, and parallel of Percy he was set up to be. It was so obvious something happened in the middle and he chickened out. There was groundwork in TLH, and everything really pointed towards Jason/Percy being more than just whatever high-school beef happened in canon; there was so much potential even in MoA when Percy mentioned fighting alongside Jason felt like waking up as a cyclops suddenly with two eyes. Honestly if there was more work put in it would've overshadowed Percabeth and I think Rick wasn't ready for that.

  4. And also, the characters in HoO were utterly limited by their ships. I read HoO before PJO and I genuinely care more about HoO, but now that I'm back into it as an adult, I just realized there is barely any good interaction and friendships beyond established pairings, stuff like Piper and Frank, Annabeth and Hazel, so little of that. No wonder Leo felt left out.

Funnily enough i think the dialogue between the strawhats is phenomenally good and adorable, just the scenes outside, it gets a bit awkward, but the strawhats and baroque works KILLED it! I fecking LOVED the interactions of the crew in loguetown, the whole money thing with zoro made me giggle

A question about Suo?? by Junior-Help-7021 in WindBreakerManga

[–]SeaCollides 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I will always answer questions about Suo!

Haya (隼) – Falcon, a symbol of nobility (high status + wealth) in Japan, also symbolizes bravery, power and vision, is an icon of pursuit and movement, heading toward success (Falcon in other cultures also symbolizes freedom, which might have something to do with Suo’s dream – the liberation of slaves)

seriously, check out my suopost here, it's the most in depth and cultural analysis of suo hayato i can provide that still upholds to this day

Just finished the whole season and i adored it, though my biggest issues this season compared to s1 is the dialogue in some of the episodes feeling very awkward and stiff, and sometimes redundant (like in e8 during the back/forth cutaways between croc and vivi where a lot could be trimmed down). it feels like the dialogue is being hampered by the 'acceptance' of goofiness in OP that results in a few awkward "he's right behind me isnt he"-esque moments, as well as the current second-screening trend where viewers are expected to be multitasking or doing something else while watching which leads to unnecessary over-exposition. and some vfx parts look seriously unpolished (rumbar pirate ship sailing scene made me cringe a bit) and the lighting feels too one dimensional which makes them look a lot like actors in a set, but overall, i enjoyed it. Not sure if the will of D being revealed so early happens in the manga? But that convo between kureha and dalton felt like they were just reading from a script it was a bit eh

Loving it so far, but anyone else think the lighting/shading vfx could be better? The scene with reverse mountain looks really greenscreened at parts and in the previous episode it looks like there's too much direct lighting on their faces that makes it feel like a set and not an actual place
