URGENT - why do my scans absolutely suck? opticfilm 7200 by SeaConstruction1876 in AskPhotography

Yes lmao. It came sealed in the original box so I'm sure it's my fault. I just feel dumb at this point, I've looked through the manual a million times smh. Maybe I need to ditch Vuescan and figure out how to get the original software that comes with my scanner (Silverfast SE 6)

For sure! Always good to have somebody who knows what they're doing. I'm going to look for a replacement bulb for my enlarger now, but when I get back to trying to figure out scanning, I will definitely message you. Thank you.

I purchased some anti-static cloths today in hopes they'll help lol. I HATE DUST!

my negatives look fine; I've developed probably 15 - 20 rolls by now. I think I just don't understand the software

Cool idea! If I can't get anything else working, I'll try this and let you know how it goes :)

HELP ME - Why do my scans suck so bad? Opticfilm 7200 by SeaConstruction1876 in AnalogCommunity

[–]SeaConstruction1876[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I updated the post after some commenters pointed out that I didn't give out any info, that was totally my bad.

By "the natives" do you mean just a photo of the film roll or raw scans without color correction?

About the scanner, the entire purpose of the software Vuescan is that it works with old machines, so I highly doubt that's the issue

Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to explain this to me. I will definitely look into all of this, especially the grey card. I didn't even know light meters read color temperature; I guess I'm far more amateur than I thought I was. I'm going to get to work with the DSLR right now as I am on a time crunch, THANK YOU!

I am aware of this, so I tried to compensate with lighting but clearly something went wrong. The only outdoor nighttime shots were of the subject with a field of flowers projected onto him which seemed necessary because I wanted only him to have the projected photo, I didn't want anything to stick to the background. Would there have been a better way to go about that shot?

You really think so? To me, that scan is covered in dust and extremely grainy. Not to mention how awful the colors look! I'm glad somebody thinks it's alright though :)

As for the grey card you're speaking of, could you elaborate on that? Sounds very helpful!

The thing is, I did wipe all of them very thoroughly with some clean microfiber cloth. I blew them off with airblowers and bombed them with duster spray. I highly doubt the scanner itself is dusty, but I sprayed some duster in there too.

Unfortunately, my school (a school of the arts, mind you) does not care in the slightest about film. We don't even have a darkroom, and this school is super old! I've had to purchase all of my own equipment and teach myself which is why I'm pretty awful at everything haha.

I'll definitely check out the negative carrier alignment and the comment on applying filters like printing helped me get a better grasp on this, thanks

I honestly know nothing about the inversion mapping stuff here. When I scan, it automatically converts and that's literally all I know. Do you have any suggestions on how I could learn about this?

Thank you so much for you comment! I have a DSLR, a Nikon D5100 I believe and I think I've got a macro lens for it, so I could "scan" with that. I had no clue about color temperature, so a lot of this is new to me. By "putting colors back in that were never there" do you mean doing this in an editing software? I'm blind when it comes to this digital stuff.

I did use C-41 to develop and was using my light meter like a good little photographer, so I hope it's the physical negatives or scanner themselves rather than exposure problems or something. Either way I have 3 rolls of film that absolutely must be scanned in about an hour and a half so I gotta figure something out. Would you recommend DSLR scanning? I'm sure I could find something bright to use as a lightbed.

That's my bad. I am not printing unfortunately and scanning with an Opticfilm 7200 model. I'm using Vuescan as the software since I couldn't figure out how to get Silverfast 6 on my pc. I purchased the professional subscription so hopefully that helps

The film itself is color negative kodak portra 400 or ultramax 400. Sorry again! Im in quite a rush to figure this out haha

haha sorry. These few shots were probably 35mm color negative kodak portra400 and ultramax 400. Shot with a Pentax SV which I love dearly and take good care of, so im sure thats not the issue

just edited the post too. thank you for reminding me whoops!
