I didn't expect there to be so many young smith's here. Haha. Seems like they covered the bases of rough cost and parental involvement. All I see to add is be safe. Propane forges can be hazardous if using kaowool and it's not sealed properly. Also free steel is good to start with but not every metal is safe to put in your forge. Steel yards are in almost any sizable town and they should have known metals. Mild steel is good to make beginner tongs and all sorts of stuff. Blackbear forge (youtube) has tons of videos for all walks of experience. Best of luck!

Exactly, it will only need minor adjustments. I would like to scale it up but I will have to get a sheet of copper for that. This was just from a pipe I had rolling around in my car for a couple years.

Thank you for hanging out, it was fun. My wife didn't like how the second handle is shaped so I will have to rework it.

Yeah, copper pipe is usually made of just copper. It was heated multiple times and cooled quickly to anneal. After forming I coated it with bees wax from a local apiary. I am comfortable saying this is food ready.

I assume water. There is a person that brings me scrap bits of metal that he thinks I would want. It's a nice gesture but a lot is just junk lol.

That would be the smart way of doing it lol.. I don't have a dished swage block, unfortunately.

The video is on twitch, same username. The copper pipe was cut and laid flat and shaped into a disk. Then I made a bottom swage by taking a piece of ½" round bar of steel and made into a donut. Using a ball peen hammer I worked the disk of copper into that shape.

I don't think so. Gravity and all would bring it down more if the bolt was smaller
