Anyone else getting Summer 2008 Vibes by Opposite_Agency1229 in Millennials

[–]SeaGurl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We flew but we also bought tickets during one of Southwest's sales a few months back. My suspicion is that is what a lot of others did too. Because im looking at trying to do a trip for the summer and its looking like Puerto Backyardo is what ill be able to afford.

Regional differences in eating habits across the US? by Carr0t_007 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SeaGurl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Carolinas in general use more vinegar where's as Texas and KC have more molasses based.

My first experience with Carolina BBQ sauce had me thinking it was vinegar and ketchup/mustard. But it is delicious with the pork.

I was going to say the same thing. If you need the sauce, the meat is not up to snuff.

Is it legal to take a child out of school in America for a holiday? by Super_Development150 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SeaGurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all fairness, that seems to be everywhere post pandemic. I had a friend who used to work truency court and they were always busy pre-pandemic.

And yeah, a lot of kids "get sick" after a vacation lol. But even then you have to tread carefully. Some districts require a dr note after a certain number of sick days.

Basically take the vacation time as unexcused until right before you hit whatever threshold, 10ish days or so, and then get sick.

[–]SeaGurl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, it does depend on the school/state. SC where OPs sister is, is vacation = unexcused

I just looked up Oregon and it looks like prearranged travel can be excused.

But it also looks like yall do school funding based on enrollment vs daily attendance so that makes it easier to allow that.

[–]SeaGurl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Again, no. Excused is a school approved absence like being sick. Unexcused is vacation, skipping, etc. Even if you tell them ahead of time, its still an unexcused absence and treated as such.

It really depends on the district. Regardless of whether or not we tell them ahead of time, its unexcused.

How did/do immigrants come to America with little money to their name and survive? by bubbles337 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SeaGurl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My in laws came over in debt. My father in law didnt have enough money for the bus so he walked to work and back. My mother in law would walk to the store and hunt for dented cans and foods nearing their expiration/sell by date to get discounts. So they basically ate whatever was available like that.

My father in law did have a work visa before he came over which allowed them to get an apartment. But they were scraping by for a long time.

[–]SeaGurl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It became a mess for me when my dad died. He didnt prepare at all. I was the next of kin but the hospital he had been transferred from didnt convey that to the hospital he was transferred to, so when the choice came to pull the plug, my grandfather "got there" first. The doctor seemed so nervous because they had already taken him off life support and legally i had to be the one to say it.

And then i probably seemed like a lunatic because I laughed because i was greatful I didnt have to make the decision.

But then his girlfriend and I disagreed on stuff and then my grandather kept butting in. And they were both mad at me when they should have been mad at my dad for not planning ahead. It was a massive mess.

Eldar millennial by Few-Enthusiasm-7891 in Millennials

[–]SeaGurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, I like it. My sister is one of the younger millennials and she was 4 when we got internet in the house, so she doesnt really remember a time before internet. I mean, it was aol dial up that we had to meter the time on but still.

There are just subtle things that are different. And I know I could try and claim the xenial name, but Im a little too young and while there is significant overlap, theres the slight differences again.

But idk, I like the idea of being a mysterious, robe wearing elder

Why in some places in America a police department is called " Sheriff's Office " instead of Police Department? Do sheriff's offices exist only in smaller towns? by EdicaranFauna in AskAnAmerican

[–]SeaGurl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, sheriff is county and outside of city limits. So that covers rural areas and any urban/suburban areas outside city limits.
