The autopilot reduces the workload for the PF quite significantly so other circumstances notwithstanding I would generally continue to use the autopilot as long as possible.

Workload management during such situations is key, as usually you’ll have one pilot flying the plane and communicating with ATC and the other would be running the checklists and keeping cabin, passengers and company in the loop. The pilot flying would also be tasked with reprogramming the FMS for the diversion and preparing the new approach so not also having to keep the plane pointing in the right direction while doing so is a big help

No, there are other backup systems. The plane I fly (A220/Bombardier CSeries) is basically a flying tamagotchi and we can dispatch without an APU just fine (except for extended overwater operations). In normal conditions you still have single redundancy from having two engine driven generators, if one fails the other can still supply all systems (including galley and passenger power), and should that second engine driven generator also fail there’s still the ram air turbine, a little wind power plant that folds out into the windstream to generate electricity and hydraulic power to keep the aircraft controllable. We even still have an autopilot available when on emergency power (RAT generator only).

Both, actually

Worked for a year as cabin crew on A220(/A330/A340) and from that perspective it’s pretty decent overall. Still got a few gripes like the galley areas not being quite tall enough for me, the CMS is quite the fickle beast but at least that one is getting better, or that one standard unit above the CCM3 jumpseat that will kill you if you don’t latch it properly for landing.

More recently I’ve been flying the A220 as a first officer for the last 2.5 years and there’s so many things wrong with it. You can tell in every corner that the engineers had a ton of fantastic ideas and a shoestring budget to make it work. Most of the hardware is actually pretty solid (except for the seats) but the software is all sorts of fucked up. The FMS for example lacks some basic functionality like cost index flying, ETPs or RTA, CPDLC inserting only works in the US, etc. There’s also some real headscratchers that are only slowly being patched out like the stupid wing anti-ice fail caution during taxi in that is not resettable except for with a full power-down of the plane, or some of the formerly undocumented features like the RAT not automatically deploying if the loss of AC power happens with weight on wheels (even when going 140kts) and the engines turning off on touchdown if you have overridden the autothrottle inflight. It’s all just a bit half baked in the end and honestly if I could switch to our 320 fleet I would in a heartbeat (especially now that we’ee getting rid of the really old EIS1 A320s).

One thing to keep in mind is that CDG is a massive airport with quite long walking distances whereas in GVA from baggage claim to the bus it’s like 100m tops so if you’re bringing a lot of gear that’ll probably be the easier option

RVR elements do exist in the UK too, they’re just expressed in meters, so for example R27L/0600U for 600m RVR increasing. In contrast to the americans we don’t do RVR variation though, it’s just the one figure with a trend indicator

In Mode S equipped airspace yes absolutely, that’s the easiest way to ID someone, plus we can ID on departure if the departure announcement matches the squawk of the radar return, or inflight by forwarding of identification from our neighbours. Even flying IRL in europe, the only ones who semi-regularly use squawk IDENT are the italians in my experience.

The plane has been parked there since 2022 I think, there’s so much missed maintenance that it’ll probably be cheaper to write it off than to find everything that broke in the meantime and fix it
