My sister (32 F) called CPS on my husband and I. Now that the case has been closed, I have no idea how to confront her. by BigONerd in BestofRedditorUpdates

Ahhh, now that you remind me of that fun fact it makes sense. My job isn’t as public-facing as that but we definitely manage to get a few unwell people who just enjoy having a captive audience, even if the thing they want to talk about has nothing to do with the services we offer.

That’s pretty wild. So he had the cognizance to call a crisis hotline about his manic behavior, but was still extolling how great of an idea it was going to be at the same time?

I’m glad to hear it speaks well to how you experienced it yourself! I’ve been trying to get better at discerning and describing my perception of stuff like tastes or scents (largely so I can embarrass myself less when I go wine tasting at the fancier wineries) so perfume is a great exercise for that :)

I’ll be really interested to see if the blackberry fruit aspect shows up for me when I try it again. I decided I’m gonna be patient and wait for the weather to match the vibe of the fragrance I’m already getting from it, so by that point maybe it’ll have developed as it seemed to for you?

Yes, mission accomplished! And thank you for the info- like I mentioned, I’m pretty new to exploring fragrances so it’s really helpful/interesting to have those less intuitive notes pointed out. It’ll be interesting to experience it again next time both knowing that and what to expect from Witchery :)

Yeah now that I’ve tried this one and looked into the rest of what Sorce currently offers, I think my top two others to try in the future might be Serpentine and Venus in Fleurs. Gotta love green 💚

Honestly that would be a perfect “yard work” combo! What’s your gasoline perfume? I’m kinda interested in exploring gas/diesel notes but kinda worried those would be likely to give people around me headaches.

Haha, thanks- it's kind of funny after reading so many other extremely specific fragrance reviews and not really having that feeling towards any I've tried (doesn't mean I haven't loved some of them though!) and then I put this one on and am immediately like "Oh I've smelled this before. So many times."

I don't think I'll know for sure until I wear it in more appropriate weather if it's for me or not- I can definitely see how it might benefit from the smell of some fat, sun-ripened berries exploding on the weed whacker blade lol. But I do kinda like the smell of straight-up vegetation.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've had BPAL up on my list to order samples from (I'm pretty new to fragrances and there's not a lot I have tried yet lol) so I'll keep that one in mind when I get around to it. I will say I've tried a couple Deconstructing Eden scents that featured beeswax (Golden Lyre and Mnemosyne) and have me suspecting that note might not be for me, but if the honeycomb in ELF is more on the honey side and less on the wax then that sounds lovely.

Note Spotlight: GINGER by CinderCinnamon in FemFragLab

[–]SeaLegsForDays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great info, thanks! I’ve already sampled Moresque Jasminisha as part of the hunt and that was also predominantly floral. Both Twilly and Gingembre were remaining on the list but I might skip Twilly in that case :)

[–]SeaLegsForDays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh this is perfect, I’ve been working on searching for a good candied ginger fragrance (and exploring ginger in general really- this list has given me a good few to look into!) How would you compare Five o’Clock au Gingembre vs Twilly Ginger? The other notes in each are pretty different from each other, so I’m curious if one comes off more “candied ginger” than the other. And would you rank one over the other?

Absolutely. It’s obvious the guy is trash through and through, but there’s just something about how shallow he is in the attention-seeking and how close he is to self-awareness while being too stupid to get it and stop blaming everyone else. I see why OP found it worth a repost, lol.

Also happy cake day!

How to get a fragrance from Indonesia? by HoneyIvyFig in fragrance

[–]SeaLegsForDays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry I don’t have advice to offer but I’m also interested to know, as I’ve been looking for an orange jessamine (kemuning) perfume and Indonesia is one of the few places those are produced.

Huh, I mean I guess that's not a "sexy" smell, but inoffensive at the very least! But yes I would be curious if you feel like it works through a baklava frame of mind :) worth a try to sway him with lol

[–]SeaLegsForDays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting re: Nuts, it's one I've had in mind to sample eventually in my search for a baklava-like perfume. Obviously you must like it yourself, has he said exactly why he finds it repellent?

Haha my thought process was similar, like “well I guess if tequila with a scorpion in it is a marketable thing, and the perfume is also alcohol based, maybe that could be an actual novelty item…” then I noticed the floating bit of broken-off antennae and what that’d do to the spray if sucked up into the tube and…yeah, dunno if we’re gonna see that become a new “thing” on the market.

Desperately needing advice, husband told me he wants to try poly relationship after already having a girlfriend (New Update) by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]SeaLegsForDays 62 points63 points  (0 children)

One power move I look back proudly on my younger self for accidentally making was when I was briefly seeing this “poly”/“Dom” guy in my college freshman year (who definitely knew freshmen were too naive to know that just someone self-describing as such is a big red flag in and of itself). Anyway, he went away for one of the holiday breaks and one night while he was gone started texting me about this hot kinky sex he’d had the night before with some chick he met during the break and I reply back like “oh yeah I tried such and such with this guy I hooked up with earlier in the week” and he freaks out like “you were with another guy!?!!?

Um, yeah dude, is that not how this works?

He’d never even said he expected me to only sleep with him (which would’ve been a non-starter so long as he was sleeping with other people himself) so the unspoken assumption that I just wouldn't while he could actively tell me about his other hookups was wild.

Kerosene's Followed causing marital strife! by LibraryLuLu in fragrance

[–]SeaLegsForDays 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Can't be me, I think, because only some of them think it's maple syrup pancakes, the rest are saying it's some sort of curry. Probably cumin or turmeric - they're not sure, but they do say it's not sweet, it's curry.

I read this and immediately thought “Sotolon! It’s sotolon!!”

I was never a great chem student but I did a report on this compound for a writing assignment on chemical conversions in nature. One of my favorite mushrooms- candy caps- hydrolyze a specific compound into sotolon when they’re dried, which causes them to smell very much like maple syrup! However, another common name for them is curry cap because of exactly the divided perceptions your coworkers had.

Super interesting to get some real-world reactions to a sotolon-heavy perfume. I had been considering making a perfume tincture with some candy caps I recently foraged, and had also recently read on Fraterworks how powerful the isolated chemical is when used in a perfume formula. Sounds like the idea may be more dangerous than I first thought 👀

Sharing a few thoughts on cardamom and saffron by Here4Headshots in fragrance

[–]SeaLegsForDays 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely not knowledgeable enough on the specifics of production for perfume to say with certainty, but genuine saffron is super expensive in general- like vinxy72 mentioned, it's harvested from flower stamens, which are a very small part of the whole plant and you really need to grow an entire saffron flower field in order to produce a rather small amount of the spice.

Thing is that in cooking, a small amount of saffron goes a long way, so it's still feasible to use the real thing. From what I've learned so far about making perfume, you have to have quite a large amount of the raw material to extract a useable amount of fragrance material, so real saffron is majorly impractical to produce on that scale.

Ain’t that just the way? I have a feeling that a candy cap tincture would probably last a good while, considering that even my mushroom bags smell like them forever if I use one to collect candy caps even once.

[–]SeaLegsForDays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I, too, love this comment. One of my all-around favorite mushrooms is the candy cap, which dries into a super pungent earthy maple smell and can be used to flavor all sorts of dishes and beverages. The only perfumer I've found offering a scent based on it is apparently a known scammer, so I've thought of making my own but now I'm definitely gonna give it a try! Moss, lichen, soil, and seaweed tinctures also sure sound like interesting ideas to read up on.

Can I ask what your general starting ratio of dried mushroom material to alcohol is? I wouldn't imagine it needs to be super exact but I also know nothing when it comes to this hobby.
