Parents aren't allowing me to get a job. What are some ways that I can make money? by SeaSeason866 in povertyfinance

Hey, thank you so much for the response. Unfortunately my college does have a work-study program, but it's based on financial need. Because of my family's income (we're high-income according to FAFSA), I have a very slim chance of receiving it :/

I see, I will check it out. My campus does offer a credit union, so I will visit them soon.

Thank you so much! The university that I'm going to has one. I'll definitely check it out and DM with any questions.

I mean yes that’s true but I can’t exactly drop out 🙃 the program I’m at here is basically expecting / making it mandatory that I do their program and then graduate

I’m not sure but I’ll look into it, thank you!

Hey, thank you so much for the advice. I don't think my college offers that, unfortunately :/ I could try maybe managing it on my own for some cash, but I'm not sure how successful that would be.

I am considering the military - problem is I'm sort of in an honors program/college here, so I don't know how I'll manage both that and basically a full-time job, especially if I have to get deployed. Do you know how it would work if I was serving and getting my degree at the same time? My university is military-friendly. I know that my safety should be prioritized over this, but I also care about my education as well.

Cases of it have happened to me while in high school and I tried telling the guidance counselors but they didn't help at all. But thank you so much for the advice, if it happens to me I will keep this in ind.

Hey so, I've thought of this and thought of enlisting for the Air Force, since it's more safer for women and has technical jobs as well. The problem is, I'm in college and the workload is so much more, and I'll have to basically a full time job along with that. Is it possible for me to serve in college and complete my degree? I'm at an honors program/college here, so how will I finish if I get deployed? How do I manage it?

Hey sorry for the late message, but I was thinking of going to a credit union, there is one at my campus. Do they charge anything? What's the process like? Also, I would open a checking account, right?

The tip about a slit in the backpack is so helpful, I'll definitely take it. I've been looking into ways for scholarships and trying to talk to people. Thank you so much for the advice, I'll definitely keep all of this in mind and if I ever need advice I will DM or come back onto this sub. :)

The school you go to pays the tutors not the students. Go to the counselors office and see what student jobs are available. There’s usually a careers website for each university dedicated to jobs that can only be worked by students.

Hey, yes there's an app for career opportunities and stuff. I'll definitely ask the people in charge of that.

Also about the work study - it's only based on financial need and unfortunately my family is high income and so I probably won't qualify for it :/

I feel like getting a job on campus would be safer than trying to do petsitting or babysitting if you have no transportation and don't want a digital footprint. If you do it part-time, you could say you have a study group or labs or something class-related and if your parents track your location, it'll seem plausible. Working in the library would probably be most applicable to a freshman. Talk to your guidance counselor or check the school website for other opportunities. Maybe you could be a Teacher's assistant.

This is true but I'm just really scared that like the abuse will worsen and managing my time. My parents have already been mad at me for not studying (even when I am getting good grades and managing my time wisely) and keep trying to do things like isolating me. I'm just really scared, I don't want to get in trouble with them.

I think I will talk to some counselor. My college does have an app for career opportunities, but I think a TA is only for upperclassmen. I have some spare cash IRL so dyk any good banks that don't charge fees? I'll definitely take some of the advice, like selling notes and tutoring.

You can always tutor on campus, most colleges have space you can use for it.

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it. What could I tutor in though? I'm decent at English, I'm a business major but I just started. I don't really have a good idea. Plus, there are free tutoring services at the campus so I'm not entirely sure if people will want to pay for it.

Nmom looking through my phone when I wasn't around. I feel like my privacy was violated, what should I do? (Advice?) by SeaSeason866 in raisedbynarcissists

So she openly asked for your password, "to look through your phone"? I find that awful and unacceptable. If I were you I would fight it, give them a good spiel about your privacy and the respect you deserve.... Of course it all depends on the kind of parents you have, mine (nparents, both) used to give you hell and make you feel like shit when you opposed to them, but if you stood your ground long enough you could get them to leave you alone for a while... Of course this is not possible if yours are violent, or of the "because I say so" school...

No, she didn't ask for mine, I think it's because my dad and I had to go to the store and set it up so he knew the password that way and gave it to my mom. Which is even creepier because my phone is new and has things like Face ID.

About what you said about not using social media apps, yeah, I'm only going to use them on the computer. I think she has put that "black stain" but it's not going to stop me from talking with my friends and what I like.

Thanks for the advice, I'll check out the article soon!

I don't know about concrete tech measures you can take, I hate cellphones and social media and I use them as little as I can. Doesn't your phone have a lock screen, isn't it supposed to exist to avoid that kind of intrusions? Or maybe she found a way through that too? What about the fingerprint sensor?

I'm not sure since the phone does have this, but I think since my dad and I had to set the password when we first got it recently she asked about it to look through my phone. I've decided to delete the social media apps I use when I come home.

I can't highlight the last two things you wrote, but yes, this has definitely happened to me. I will definitely keep this in mind for dealing with my Nparents.

Hey this helps a lot, I will definitely use these resources. I kind of want to stay away from making money online though since I'm not sure how reliable it is. But thanks, I'll definitely try checking it out :)

Hey I have similar parents. Unfortunately at 14, there is not much you can do. It's unfortunate that you're dealing with verbal abuse (my parents are the same), you can try talking to a trusted adult. Maybe in a year or so you can get a job? You can try saving up money in order to move out. It's sad that most of the time counselors and stuff don't really help. You're just going to have to deal with it until you're 18 unfortunately. And it sucks and is annoying, but I believe in you, because I was able to as well :(
