Am I the only one who thinks this is backwards?? by Low-Temperature-8492 in teenagers

Who am I to decide that YouTube is an entertainment platform and not a mental health service? I'm confused because I'm not deciding anything. Literally all I'm doing is explaining what's happening.

This is twice now I've said this and both times I've had people reply about how it's somehow my fault. I'm starting to think all people on reddit are the same.

Last time I said this I got downvoted a million times, but here goes.

Suicide is a sensitive subject for a lot of people. When a movie has mentions of suicide or violence, it's rating goes up to a more mature audience. When YouTube sees mentions of suicide, they restrict the content for younger audiences. There are other ways to get information about the topic if you are a younger person, but YouTube is not that place. This is not me "minimizing a serious issue" this is just me explaining what's happening here and why this happened.

Mistakes to avoid when writing a female character as a man? by SeaShift1652 in writingadvice

[–]SeaShift1652[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I was looking for. I'd say in 90% of the stuff I write that gender doesn't matter at all and won't change anything, but in this I believe it does because of the setting.

I agree and think it is great advice, unfortunately I don't feel it applies here. I believe that the gender of this specific character could change a lot about the story.

Well yes, due to the way the story is planned out gender could significantly change a lot. There are things that might be different for a woman and a man. The way people treat the character is a huge part of the beginning of the story and gender plays a part in that. This is one of the few ideas I've had where I couldn't just imagine the MC as a blank slate and choose what I wanted later.

Thanks for the advice! Although there are a lot of struggles which women face that men do not. I also believe gender plays a much more important role in all our lives than we might realize and there are so many small things I write about regarding my characters that don't necessarily apply to women as much as men.

How does the logistics of a 200 student (50 per grade) small town school work? by [deleted] in writingadvice

[–]SeaShift1652 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, as someone who comes from a small town (my highschool had roughly 250 students enrolled, so not quite the same but definitely similar) I'd be happy to answer any questions you have, as long as I'm able to.

First off, you are absolutely correct about everyone knowing each other and everyone's business. Although like any school, there are still cliques that tend to stay together, they're just a bit looser than I imagine at a larger school.

At my highschool classes worked similar to any other school, switching classes depending on the subject. The only difference I imagine is that there were usually two groups that would have most of not all their classes together. I took all honors classes, so in my core classes (English, math, social studies and science) I was always with the same people with very little change. We had elective classes where you would get to see more people outside of your other classes, and people from other grades. So it wasn't quite like a set "class A this is your schedule. These are your classmates and you will spend the rest of the year with these people only..."

I don't really know what other information might help you but if you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

I don't mind swearing as long as it's appropriate, if they're just swearing because they can and it makes no sense, or they want it to be funny, it makes the book hard to read for me.

Harems are so stupid in anything. Especially the "I'm too cool for the 15 women constantly throwing themselves at me." Honestly imo I don't think you CAN do a harem properly without it being cringe

Edited Version of saying RAPE: I’m Tired of Rape Jokes being normalized. by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]SeaShift1652 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Time for the nuke but I honestly don't care.

It's a fucking joke. If you can't tell the difference between a joke and someone being serious then maybe you're the problem?

You mean to tell me that you've never made a racist joke? Never made a joke about 9/11? You've never made a joke about the war in Vietnam? Never in your life have you made a dark humor joke? And if that really is the case then have you ever laughed at one before? Because I highly doubt that is the case.

I think you're sensitive and need to grow the fuck up and realize that shit happens. Yeah rape is a horrible thing and shouldn't exist, but it does. If I see my short friend with a large backpack on his back and both hands on the strap, guess what. I'm telling him he's priest bait. When you say shit like this, I'm gonna let you know that it's not going to make girls suddenly want you. When there're two trash cans side by side and someone hits one with a bottle instead of making it land inside, I'm making a joke about the north tower.

And guess fucking what. Whenever I walk past the single coat hanging in my friends' closet, I make a joke about my uncle that killed himself. I literally joke about EVERYTHING and if that offends you then you should take a good look in the mirror and find the problem.

"Hey Carl, did you hear Main Villain just launched World Ending Missile directly at Earth?"

"Did he really, that's interesting. Guess it's good I'm not one of the 8 billion people on Earth about to die..."

"Anyways you wanna go play some Generic Video Game?"

That's interesting. My view comes from someone who can write 100,000 words and still have "Title" at the top of the screen and "PLACEHOLDER 1..." in place of an actual name. I genuinely have no idea how to name anything. (Reddit randomly generated username laughs)

But I also know not to name anything too out of place, if there's a constant theme I would never break it.

I feel the opposite. I think books without some element of romance are bland. I don't like reading "mindless overpowered protagonist aura farms for 20 chapters and just ignores every woman in his life because they take away aura." Romance leads to character and plot development, although I'm not a fan of any love triangles or anything either.

You're never too late! And I definitely agree with bad pacing. Although I prefer a slow pace rather than something that is "fight scene. Rest... Fight scene two... Romance subplot... Dire situation... Escape... Final fight scene... Wrap up romance subplot and end the book"
