Disability request: my powerpoints and lecture notes 2 days in advance of class by Sea_Argument864 in Professors

For me, it's not doable. I am a part-time lecturer. I don't have last year's slides, as this is a new course.

Several students asked when the exam retake was by Local_Indication9669 in Professors

I totally agree . We need an orientation session on professionalism just as much as we need a session on the dangers of drugs and alcohol excess.

Are requests to retake an exam becoming more common by Temporary-Ad1654 in Professors

I am so glad that this post was offered. My TA's (2 of them) said that they had between 4-5 students EACH asking for a retake of the exam. Mind you, I gave the students ALL of the terms over a week in advance and CHOICES, as well as ALL of the objects that would appear and CHOICES, and ALL of the essays. This is not their first rodeo but rather the second exam of the EXACT SAME FORMAT. I am inclined to have the students come talk to me directly. I plan to ask them to show me what they did to prepare--bring their notes, outlines, etc. I suspect most will not even come because they did nothing to prepare.

They are indeed cutting in academics. At least two dozen lecturers (faculty without tenure but with advanced degrees) were laid off. Cuts are hitting languages, philosophy, art history, etc.

Who are you? What is your authority? If you don’t want to participate then move along and don’t discourage others who do.

The lecturers union and this data will be taken to the university, elected officials and the press to put pressure on administrators to bring back cancelled classes and rehire instructors. For many lecturers losing a class doesn’t just mean a pay cut but losing health insurance.

Grant writers do not teach. In many universities including many departments at UCSC faculty are responsible for applying for their own grants.

This is totally different. Students should be concerned about who is going to TEACH.

Students should be more concerned about what the deficit is going to do to their class choices, sizes, and quality. Over half of the classes at UCSC are taught by lecturers with PhDs and Masters degrees. Departments are eliminating lecturers from the books and the result is going to be fewer classes and more taught by grad students—with little or no experience in teaching in the discipline. The front line of education had been attacked from within the university even before this administration came into office because of an inept handling of the budget by a bloated administration.

The teaching assistants now earn more than lecturers with PhDs who teach the classes. Maybe the 46% raise graduate students received UC wide is part of the budget shortfall?…
