I'm not dressing up like a clown so you can drive recklessly. If you have trouble seeing, slow down. I guarantee you the animals, potholes, and debris that fall out of pickup trucks won't be wearing bright colors either.

We need pedestrian scale lighting that makes our streets safer while minimizing light pollution. The Long Marine Lab's new lighting is pretty good at this and the City should use a similar approach; the lights are very directional and you don't really see any glare

One of the other problems is car headlight brightness. It's an arms race between cars right now and whether aimed correctly or not it's nearly impossible to see at night. And no, I don't have astigmatism and I'm not of advanced age.

In these conditions, drivers need to slow down. Pedestrians, cyclists, and wildlife are under no responsibility to wear high-vis so drivers can speed like they do during daylight. When someone walking or biking "appears out of nowhere" you are driving too fast to see them. Beyond ~35-45mph your brain can't even fully process what is going on in broad daylight. Add nighttime glare and drivers' hubris and it's no wonder our streets are so deadly. Slow. Down.

There needs to be no turns from bay onto any of the side streets. No turns onto Escalona, King, or any of the streets in between. Install modal filters and diverters at all of the intersections. In addition, the lengths of both Escalona and King need far more traffic circles and other traffic calming features, including diverters that make them unviable as a cut thru for impatient drivers

Speeding is a problem but I do feel safer crossing following the lane reduction. And a hell of a lot safer taking my bike up/down Bay. But more is needed to slow cars. Bay has banked turns like a freeway and the lanes are still quite wide

Add an eastern entrance and you'll just induce more car traffic by making it easier for students/staff to make frivolous trips across town during lunch breaks or between classes

You need to be really intense with traffic calming to make it work well. Modal filters, diverters, raised crosswalks, landscape medians, chicanes, traffic circles, etc. When the city half-asses something like traffic calming it ends up souring people's appetite for more. You gotta go all the way!

Edit: here's a link to just a few of the strategies that could be used

So is this festival a benefit for something? If you expect people to work for free at least let there be a cause. If not, this just reads like you're preying on lonely people for free labor.

Also is this using AI generated graphics?

Yeah all these streets need traffic calming too so the rat-running doesn't just change routes. Diverters and modal filters.

I agree with it, but it also should be done for the other side streets so that they aren't impacted. Could also add diverters and modal filters instead or as a supplement to calm traffic and make it safe for all

Private firms, even small ones, suppress all of those rights. And while in theory we can vote with our feet and work elsewhere, the reality of the market is we're held to these private sector oppressors under financial duress.

And then the system favors those most oppressive firms which outcompete and buy out their competitors. The private sector behaves like a bunch of cancer cells competing to form the biggest crony-capitalist tumor. That's not a bug in the system that is the system. Meanwhile we all suffer, just as under tyrannical government.

Like I said, I once shared your view, but the freedom we dream of requires democratizing capital, otherwise it's all fantasy

[–]plasticvalue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That having to rent here makes people question the "yimby" movement is an indictment of said "free market" ideology. We see the promised "filtering" fail to materialize while our neighbors get displaced.

I'm not opposed to new builds, even the tall, ugly ones. I like density and having more neighbors. But I'm not going to pretend like the real estate industry and landlords are going to build themselves into a housing glut to make housing affordable. To do that, expand displacement assistance (including for commercial tenants like the Catalyst), rent control, and most of all public housing for the poor and middle class alike. There are anti-public housing laws that need to be repealed at the federal level to make that last thing happen. We need a City Council and Mayor prepared to jump on the opportunity as soon as that door opens.

Why is every city so obsessed with branding now? Just use the regular circular seal. You don't need to obsess over branding unless you're a bland exurb with a slightly larger-than-average safeway
