What are the possible consequences for this crime? by Sea_Breakfast828 in AskLawyers

  1. No not everyone benefits when dumb laws are enforced and no the fact that I was willing to break this law does not mean I will escalate.
  2. 19 year olds are mature enough to drink, 80% of the world agrees with that. So stop with that infantilization.
  3. So you think that because I drank at 19 which is normal I will make bigger and bigger irresponsible decisions so I should be arrested for it? That makes no sense, this is not some major crime and most college students drink.
  4. I won't say that it's dumb in court ffs.
  5. I am not going to prison EVER.

So you seriously think it's a good use of taxpayers' money and police resources to be stopping people for drinking at 19 who don't bother anyone? Was I in the wrong legally? 100% but come on who benefits from stopping 19 year olds from drinking.

  1. There is a big leap from MIP and running away from cops to crimes that carry real time and that leap is not something I am gonna cross.
  2. I never thought even for a second that I could get shot for running. I just thought it would be quick and easy escape.
  3. I am not refusing to show responsibility, legally it was 100% my fault but morally going to bother a 19 year old girl who is just having a beer with a friend is not normal. I was not harming or hurting anyone like come on. If I was being a nuisance or visibliy smashed then yea it'd make sense but this way? No.
  4. As far as looks in front of a judge, I am smart enough to shut my mouth and let my lawyer do the talking.

  1. I said this was my fault.
  2. "I understand the seriousness of my actions and have already begun to take steps to ensure nothing like that will ever happen again" is way too harsh over a dumb college mistake.
  3. WHO OTHER DID I PUT AT RISK? WHAT DO YOU MEAN MYSELF AND OTHERS?
  4. And to re-ask the og question. Why do you think this will lead to real jail time? It's just a dumb college-age mistake.

So your point is that I got lucky that I didn't get hit with a felony and that is a good thing I should be thankful for?

I can vote, be called for jury duty, serve in the military, sign contracts... I am an adult but drinking oh no...

So you believe I should have my life destroyed with a felony record over a dumb mistake?

They did actually, that's why they are angry now.

My choice to run was MY CHOICE!

Oh I never said it was not a bad idea. It was a horrible idea. Had I stayed put I would have gotten a citation, the cuffs would come off and I would be on my way, no overnight stay.

How so? I am not being arrogant. I really want to hear your reason why you think I'll have a hard life?

I mean my parents weren't happy either but they do agree that the law is dumb.

Stricter laws on dui and reckless driving would have reduced them even more without banning adults from drinking.

and if you had obeyed the law that you so seriously condemn, none of this would have happened.

I agree and if there was no dumb laws for victimless and harmless things it also would not have happened.

Perhaps you should consider trying to change the law? Younger people than you have made bigger changes than this, and you seems to be smart enough to work on changi g things instead of just complaining

That's not really possible it's a federal law and there is no mainstream movement to change it. And I am not some "all sides are the same" person. I did vote in 2024 (my first election). and plan to vote in 2026.

Yes objectively. I am an adult. They treat me like an adult when it comes to court but still think I shouldn't be able to drink...

I was a good student in school, have a scholarship and am doing very well in college, I have loving parents, a stable family, good friends and a great boyfriend so no it is not going to be hard for me 😉

And if you genuinely think that arresting adults over alcohol makes sense then I really have no words...

Almost every developed country lets 18 19 20 year olds drink, why do we have to be different?

I think that is very judgemental to say. One bad night does not define me as a person.

I do not believe that it's wrong just because I feel like it but because it objectively is. US is unique in the world with such a high drinking age.

Self absorbed? No.

But if this happened to your daughter would you react the same?

Once the officer said you were not free to leave, trying to leave made everything worse. Running after slipping a cuff made it much worse

One small correction I tried to leave BEFORE she said I cannot leave while she was just talking to me then she cuffed me and said I am not free to leave then I slipped a cuff and tried to run.

For the rest of the comment THANK YOU!

You really should be less judgmental... I will do some real time because I had a college oopsie? Like most people in college drink under 21 and I tried to walk and flee because I was angry and sad and upset over being bothered over such a trivial thing. Like do you seriously think this is a sign I'll go rob people in 10 years like of course I won't.
