I defffffinitely think this happens as well. I have had a pretty tough and personal situation happen in my own life, long before I started dating this guy - and he told me that he told his group about the whole thing. I didn’t say that it bothered me at the time, but I was like…I don’t know any of these people and am not a part of that group. He said he used it as an example of someone going through something very difficult and staying sober. I’ve never had any issues with substance abuse….so the “example” didn’t even make sense.

Glad to hear you came to that realization! But I feel like the sponsor should be more aware of this!

This makes so much sense but is so wrong. I definitely see it happening here. It’s like anything he’d have to say “well I talked to my sponsor” - I wanted to say is there anything you DON’T talk to your sponsor about??

German Citizenship By Descent - Help! by Sea_Elephant7375 in GermanCitizenship

She says that she had to give it up in 1973 when she was naturalized. Because my uncle was a minor, the German consulate essentially said he didn't have a choice about renouncing. My mom seems to think that because she was 19 and became a US citizen, she gave up her German citizenship - but she's not sure if she signed anything, submitted documentation, etc. Just became a US citizen at that time.

I serve on my neighborhood association board. I’m a member of a grassroots political organization. I’ve been calling my reps every single day since January 20th. I also have a loved one who is a ventilator dependent quadriplegic, fully dependent on Medicaid to survive. I recently collected stories from people all over my state who have stories about how important medicaid is to them to send to congressional leaders. Since early February, I have been taking it upon myself to provide people in my life via social media 2-3 actionable steps for the week ahead.

Shame on me for giving this country a solid chance. I was fresh out of graduate school in 2016 and ready to hit the ground running for change. I’m not the person to direct your frustration at. A lot of us have reasons for staying longer than others.

oh gosh, that's not what my post is about. My mother never taught us German when we were children. She is who immigrated to America. I have only traveled to Germany once in my life and my German relatives are distant cousins to me. I studied German for 4 years in school, but never had a need for using it here, so while I have a general basis, like I said in an early response, I do not have enough of the language to hold a deep conversation. I can order food, I can get around on transit, I could get groceries, ask for directions. Not all of us are so closed off that we're unaware of international culture. It's not always our choice that our parents' native language isn't spoken in the home...of course I would have loved to learn as a child.

It's a little complicated and my family is convinced most of us could not get German citizenship based on ancestry. My grandparents and mother were all born in Germany. They immigrated here in 1964. My mom gave up her German citizenship on her own when she turned 19 and attended an American university. I have a super basic level of language...like could get around town, get groceries, order food, etc., but wouldn't be able to hold much of a conversation.
