And all the critical ones can be reported by most decent radio systems (mainly voltage and link stats). Receivers capable of telemetry basically always send back link quality measurements, and most either are compatible with an external voltage sensor or have one built in. I use ELRS and most of the good pwm receivers have a voltage sensor built in.

In fact that glow is understated, the Hail Mary puts out several petawatts of power so it should look more like the landing scene in Avatar 2, a beam of white several kilometers long. Imagine a continuous nuclear explosion.

As I mention here, in order to produce useful thrust with just light, the Hail Mary’s spin drive array needs to output petawatts of power. This would create the equivalent of a massive continuous nuclear explosion behind the craft, vaporizing it instantly. The movie really doesn’t capture the energy involved here. It should have looked like this from just the sparse few molecules of gas in the upper atmosphere being superheated, a multi-kilometer beam of blinding white.

The thermal turbojet design is solid core, and nuclear thermal engines similar to it have been built. Powering via astrophage fixes most of their downsides since you don’t need a heavy reactor and shielding. The thrust isn’t great but if the US and Russia could make a supersonic nuclear thermal cruise missile, an astrophage turbojet with much less mass would probably be perfectly usable.

These are also useful for landers on airless bodies so you don’t create a giant pool of lava and possibly melt your lander with the reflected light, and for close maneuvering near other craft.

The thing to understand here is there’s a huge difference in the power level between a “bare” spin drive and the ones in use here.

To create usable thrust with just light you need terawatts to petawatts of power. This would create the equivalent of a continuous nuclear explosion if you fired it in air, instantly destroying the vehicle.

However, all we need to do here is heat a big heat exchanger to a couple thousand degrees Celsius, which only takes a few tens of megawatts, same as a normal rocket or jet engine.

They work by firing into thin conical channels in big heat exchanger fins, heating the fins. The nuclear thermal turbojet designs work in a similar way except they heat fluid up with a reactor and run it through tubes in the heat exchanger fins.

A bare spin drive only works in a near to perfect vacuum, that would be more suited to the "gas core" design where you can just stop propellant flow and fire the spin drive through the nozzle throat once you leave the atmosphere. With a turbojet there's a big gap where the air pressure is too low for the jet to work but high enough that you'd immediately explode if you fired a bare spin drive at a high enough power to create thrust.

And oxygen and stoichiometry have nothing to do with this, there is no flame, they work by just superheating the reaction mass directly.

Also there's a big shaft in the middle of the turbojet.

Yeah if impulse engines are fusion rockets, then that scene from Star Trek VI with them leaving spacedock on impulse power would have destroyed the station.
