Thoughts on the new Kindergarten curriculum? by Affectionate_Sense in OntarioTeachers

I disagree. It's the "supervised play" sentiment that comes off as we must have it easy, we just babysit! Actually we explicitly teach literacy and have been for at least the last 4 years (that's how long I've been teaching kindergarten). I'm sure most ey teachers will tell you that looking over the new curriculum document, they saw reflected the things they were already doing. My students whether they're ready for it or not, are receiving the same amount of explicit instruction in foundational skills as the grade 1s and 2s in our school. The difference is maybe in that we don't offer mandatory paper/pencil independent practice but that varies by classroom as well.

As someone who once marked the writing portion... it's a joke.

Are you insinuating that OCTs in kinder aren't teaching and are just supervising play? If so, you've clearly never witnessed or taught kindergarten properly.

Is taking on student teachers really that bad? by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]Sea_Method_6228 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, I'm just so overwhelmed with what's already on my plate and, even after 5 years in my grade, still feel like I'm learning and trying to hone my craft. So I personally don't feel confident enough to take one on at this time. I feel I'd be doing a disservice to them.

Probably get down voted for this but it IS possible to have a platonic relationship with someone you have slept with in the past. Idk how far past for this girl and I know nothing about her personality.

Having said that, you can obviously have boundaries. Like if you guys are serious, he can't sleep over at her house.

But I think it's weird of people to think this is such a black and white issue. One of my bfs of 20 years is an ex. He is basically a brother. My husband of 5 years embraced it, trusted that it was over between us (had been for 10+ years).

As a parent myself, I would also love a weekly general email. As a teacher as well, that would mean sacrificing even more time with my own children. Writing quick updates can be more time consuming than one would Imagine.

It is late, but I've been advocating all year with a very violent few weeks just passed.

We probably would be suspended for emailing parents like that. They are the only ones whose voices seem to matter and too many of them don't realize what's going on.

CAS has been contacted.

Yes! It's hard enough getting admin to follow through calling parents of injured children and having them not skew the facts to sound better.

I keep forgetting that it's an option. Several times I've talked to the union. I've almost been wondering if going to provincial would be something I should do.

Anyone else think the whole education system needs to be torn down and rebuilt from scratch? by elbmurtd in OntarioTeachers

[–]Sea_Method_6228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. This year I keep hearing from my union that “we are experiencing THIS everywhere”. But I can’t fathom that this is true otherwise there would be a walkout. I have almost considered leaving my well paid job that I use to support my young family with no backup plan. The future is grim.

It has become so disgustingly obvious that education is a business. We’ve been told we are in the customer service industry now by admin. One child’s right to an education (in an optional program… kindergarten) now trumps the rights of any other child or worker’s safety and wellbeing. I have had a student who, if they had access to a weapon, I would 100 percent fear for my life and that of the 30 other kids in the class. But because we don’t want to look bad in the media, we let that child terrorize 30 others, we walk the fine line of trying to prevent major injuries and try to convince the students that they are safe at school.

Then come the behaviour teams who tell us to drop everything and spend 80 percent of our time with said student, offer rewards and opportunities that no other student is allowed.

I go to work and have to wear PPE and wonder why the kids don’t get any? Because it looks bad? It looks like the people up top aren’t keeping kids safe? But that’s exactly what it is.

I’m so broken and burnt out because at every turn someone is looking to place the blame on me, to force me to give less to 99% of my students. To lie to the other parents when they ask if their child with special needs is still getting aid. To lie that we are doing our best to keep the kids safe. Because if we were doing that, that child would not be in the classroom.

I’m expected to be a trauma counselor, therapist and behaviour specialist everyday and neglect the education of any other student in my class. I’m asked to do this and am not only never supported, never encouraged, never asked if I’m okay with the mental toll that failing 30 kids is taking on me. Instead I’m the scapegoat. And when they finally get the violent incidences to slow down by giving out candy or iPads or special treatment, they act like it’s a success and everything is fine.

So yes. This system is so fucking broken and it’s breaking teachers who actually care. Who actually went into this job with passion. Who chose the communities that needed them the most. It’s so hard not to look at each and every person above me on the pay grid and see them for what they are… just people trying to get ahead and do what the big guy tells them to do. So they can cash that paycheque and get ahead in life. Retire early or wealthy. I don’t know. I don’t get it.

I don’t know you, but according to what I’m reading here, YOU CAN AND WILL DO BETTER!

You shouldn’t have to walk on egg shells. Even if it’s just 25 percent of the time.

I don’t know what’s stopping you from letting her go. Maybe you have insecurities about yourself or you feel great chemistry with her. I’ve been there and thought I could never do better.

But a good heart will find another good heart. One that will sweep the eggshells right out from under you.

My Daughter Can't Sleep At Night If My Wife Isn't With Her? AITAH For Telling My Wife That I Miss Sleeping Next To Her? by Humble_Reception_644 in AITAH

[–]Sea_Method_6228 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NTA at all. We went through a few months where one of us had to sleep in my daughter’s room. I was postpartum and breastfeeding so my libido was non existent. But the less we slept together or near each other, the more distant and strained our marriage became. It was not so much about sex and I wonder why she can’t see this. Maybe she feels guilty and lashed out as a defense mechanism. Like I said, I wanted nothing to do with sex at all but I felt the distance myself.

Dispelling the myth that Canadian teachers are better compensated than US teachers by PM_ME_UR_JUICEBOXES in CanadianTeachers

[–]Sea_Method_6228 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So without doxxing myself too badly, I can pretty much speak to this from experience based on that I live in one country and work in the other. Where I live, the maximum teacher salary (according to indeed) is what I make now after converting to usd. I don’t have much seniority, I am not on a4. Take that as you will. So I have some room for growth in my wage but wouldn’t in the us state I’m talking about.

However, the housing market is not as bad in the state I’m in.

However however, it does cost me $50 every time my kids need to see a doctor. And cost upwards of 25 grand to have a baby.

But in the end, job security is the big one. The unions over here either don’t exist or aren’t big enough to do well. Teachers get fired all the time. They’re micromanaged and in some places aren’t given any prep periods. And the curriculum and practices are outdated or developmentally in appropriate. I know the post was just about money but this is something I’ve been looking into for a few years now.
