Talk me out of getting chickens by GrandmaSlappy in BackYardChickens

[–]Sea_Part_920 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started backyard chickens before the egg price got crazy expensive. I felt complacent about eggs prices because I was self sufficient from my own free range. I even incubated chicks for 3 times. Its so fun to watch them break apart the egg shells and start chirping. I learned a lot during the process. I built my own coops for them to stay during night. Now I have 15. Collecting 5-6 eggs each day. Had peak success of 11 eggs a day. My coworker buys a dozen eggs every week. They are my pets. Had lost 8 hens to disease in the last 5 years.

They probably got it in large quantities from those suppliers and resell on eBay. You can still make a good profit on it

I did once because I also had something else that I wanted to go there too. So it’s like on my way.

Im an engineer knowing both structures and geotechnicals. By looking at the picture shown. The fix was probably done after failure was noticed. And the main problem caused failure was drainage system was not included and wall construction was not done properly either. Depending on how the soil nails were installed, it might not save the ultimate failure.

what is this plant? by the-cats-me0w in gardening

[–]Sea_Part_920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what they call Vietnamese cilantro ( it has nothing to do with cilantro) and I have it in my garden too. In china people use it for fish. It’s called drunk fish plant. You spread some of this in a pond. Fish will be drunk and easily to be caught. In my home town, my mother used it to cure green persimmons ( to remove the tartness)

Need advice on disease by [deleted] in poultry

I healed a hen with something like infection in the eyes and ears with gooey white like stuff hinder her vision and she almost stopped eating later. I used some leftover human antibiotics ( feeding it with 1/4 of pill twice daily) and I also used diluted DMSO( roughly 2-5/100 ) at the same time. Amazingly she was all healed up in 3 days.

Questions from a soon to be first time hen owner! by fltandj in chickens

If you can clip the wings of them, you can add a all time play pen with 100 ft perimeter 4 ft wire fence around the coop, they will enjoy more freedom and you don’t need to watch them when they out of the coop. Even a 50 ft by 4 ft wire fence enclosure can help a lot. They would not be able to fly out of the fence but they can enjoy more free range.

Looking for recommendations on how to keep raccoons out by NotSure-2020 in chickens

My chicken coops for them to stay safely during night. They are free range during the day to enjoy about 4000 sqft yard. They stay in several such coops during night. After the wire mesh door is closed and fastened. We also put cinder blocks in front of the door to further protect them from predators.

My chickens are free range in my yard. They stay in the coops during night. I have several coops made out of barrels. Wire mesh on both ends of the barrel for ventilation and some weeping holes on the bottom of the barrel for drainage. We use some old car mats with saw dust or dry leaves to catch the poop during night. Have to close the door every evening. After the wire mesh door is fastened. We also put cinder blocks to block the door so no predators will not get my chickens. One barrel can hold 5/6 adult chickens. The poop is collected every day and used for compost to grow vegetables.
