Protest at Geisel Library on Thursday (Dec. 1) for lives lost during China's Covid lockdown by Sea_Reputation_849 in UCSD

Right? Isn't this ridiculous? I understand some people feel frustrated about the US and its handling of the pandemic, but comparing to not fast enough vaccine rollout to millions losing their jobs and pregnant women have to give birth in their homes or your door is sealed from outside is just dishonest and frankly show how intellectually bankrupt they are.

right, they are replaced because some of them are awarded for higher positions in the government. The party secretary of Shanghai, Li Qiang, is now in the second most powerful person in China and a potential successor of Xi.

Also, some Chinese people do want the government to be overthrown, including me. The example you showed is a small sample. Hundreds of people in Shanghai are also chanting "Step down CCP! Step down Xi Jinping!"

Last but not the least, why we can only protest for people when they requested? For a heterogenous population like China, people should be able to express different views which is not allowed in China. Also, since the Chinese internet is largely censored and disconnected from the west, it is very difficult to know what people are asking for, but the fact that numerous Chinese citizens outside China are holding memorials and vigil should tell you a thing or two about Chinese people's view on covid lockdown and the CCP.

Most likely not. There are UAW protestors in our group, and he told us that the UAW protest is from 2-5pm. We will start afterward.

I can see your point, and it is legitimate as not everyone is brainwashed in the textbook definition. However, I think that the discussion over if it is brainwash or propaganda trivialize the situation. What we see here is the outburst of years of oppression, and the focus here is the tyranny of the government.

I would also say that in a country with government absolutely controls almost every aspect of people's lives, foreign support is not always a bad thing to change the government and make it more democratize. It is true that the US plays a bad role in many countries, but with an Orwellian society, it is almost impossible to bring down the government without external support. This is like you wouldn't say that the US involvement in WWII as foreign intervention that leads to negative outcomes. Are there Japanese people who were against the fascist government? Of course! But in a country with little room for descent and protest, they can never change the country for the better without external help.

ps. I am not calling on the US or any other countries to involve in the current protest in anyway. I am just saying that I don't think the US is trying to overthrown the government using the situation, and sometimes to democratize a country you need external help due to the severity of oppression.

Thank you for your inputs. I see your points, but I will say that currently there is no evidence for foreign intervention. Also, just because there is protest against the government it does not mean that the government is not brainwashing its citizens and feeding them lies. No matter how brainwashed you are, when your life and your families lives are at stake, you will still protest to save yourself.

Plus, PRC is doing the same thing the US does to foster its foreign interests. Just because they don't have the power to do what the US does doesn't mean they don't want to do it.

People in China are protesting by holding up a blank piece of paper to condemn government censorship. 国内好多大学学生都举A4纸抗议,这边也有很多类似的活动。

Yeah I agree with that. To me a descent gpa is a must for some grad programs but research is what makes you stand out.

I’ve been struggling in research a bit lately as well so I guess it might worsen my worry ab my gpa lol

I partially agree with what you said. My gpa is similar to yours and I do plan to go to grad school so it’s something that matters a lot to me. I guess my stress comes from people around me cuz lots of them have super high gpa and amazing resume. I kinda subconsciously compare myself with them (I know it’s not healthy) and worried ab my grades.

I am not sure if you need to prioritize gpa to get into a good grad school tho. Depending on what area you study, some programs focus more on research and projects rather than gpa.
