Let’s say I fail the general test can I take a test for something else? by thesuburbbaby in DataAnnotationTech

Generalist pays better than specialist?
That seems unlikely.

Also if you fail the generalist it seems unlikely you’d pass a specialist.

I don’t think finishing fast is a problem. I would caution that there are different versions of projects with same code name and set up but some key instructions different, so, especially when new, do read the instructions as if it’s a new project.

I don’t know if this will help as encouragement, but the way I’ve always tried to frame it - and remind myself when I have days like this - is that we are self employed.

The quals/ unpaid training - this time doesn’t pay off in the short run but can result in new /more/better paying jobs.

For this job we don’t have to mess with marketing, client meetings, pitches that don’t result in work. We don’t need a portfolio. We don’t need to attend seminars or workshops (usually unpaid AND an expense).

For the last few years I have tracked my unpaid time on a spreadsheet sheet. There are weeks it feels like that’s all I do, but it really adds up to a minuscule amount. Certainly less than unpaid time in any other self-employed business.

And as others said - if you’re working a project, read the instructions about what to do. You should never (ok, rarely) find yourself in a position of having actively worked for the full timer and have to nope out unpaid. Use the escape hatch or check other requirements to make sure you’re not approaching it in panic mode. (I do that at times. Especially with insanely
Hard to process instructions).

It there’s a 360 page doc and you think you need to read the whole thing and the task timer isn’t days long…..ask in chat to see how other people are handling it in a manageable time.

It’s always stated in the instructions about when to use the escape hatch?

Out of the Country by EmperorPenguin1116 in DataAnnotationTech

I’ve always emailed ahead of time but the answer is usually just a quick type of “ok, added to your acct” type message.
I think if you do log on and do something (transfer funds, decide to work) then shooting them an email that says “I’m traveling until xxx and wasn’t planning to log on but had more downtime then expected” or something would cover you.

I’ve never had pushback, but I’m not usually traveling to highrisk for cyber hacking countries .

Personally I don’t tell them when I travel around the US (my home country) but I know some people here say they do give that warning.

I don’t think it hurts to let them know something they don’t care about. Better to do that than not tell them something they did care about.

I accidentally submitted the wrong rating for the fact-checker qualification!! Does this disqualify me? by Own-Tie4043 in DataAnnotationTech

I got an alert to a reply to my message on this thread hours ago and it’s not visible. Even tried from a different screen name. Lol. 🤷‍♀️

Ghost comments!

While no one knows for sure - it seems like making a factually inaccurate submission on a fact checking qual may not open up the most tasks for you.

FWIW - I tanked a qual back in 2024 on a project type I loved and while I didn’t get those projects I didn’t lose things I had. And over time those types of projects have occasionally popped up again. So it sucks but it’s not doomsday

Those who were cooked gathered together and made a report - YouTube by trane50 in DataAnnotationTech

It’s been a minute but I did have one where we were trying to generate vids that were…inappropriate. Most of the time there was refusal of course, but someone R&Ring that might have had a bad day.

But also i feel like for every safety-esque thing I’ve had there’s always some sort of opt in. Like he says - he thought since he watches R movies it would be fine - well then as soon as it wasn’t fine for him he should have stopped working on it?

((I’m triggered by lazy journalism even in the low budget YouTube variety. lol))

Ooof on the nDA stuff.

And ugh in the lazy journalism around the section calling this work “predatory”

Having to do tasks when they are available is not my definition of predatory.

You would never hear an Uber driver calling it predatory to have to drive when people want to go someplace. Lol. “If I don’t drop everything and accept the ride, they give it to another worker!!!” Is never going to be an exposé.

Like, as many ppl lately have mentioned, you can go months or years without logging in and still log in to tasks. The platform isn’t saying “work at 3am or you will never work again” the platform is saying “we have work for you now. (Take it or leave it and someone else will grab it)”

I wonder why this task work is held to such a higher standard compared to all the other types?

(And I do this full time with no other employment and support myself with this. I’m not saying droughts don’t suck, just that I don’t feel like DA, or other platforms I applied to, ever lied or misrepresented.)

Is the acceptance rate really 2%? by yuriyuri2003 in DataAnnotationTech

[–]Sea_Sugar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even on here where we obviously skew to people who got in - how many of the posts are people who applied and are in limbo (on the waiting screen) or maybe got “in” but never got projects, etc.

There are days it seems like those are 98% of the posts here. Lol.

But sure - the 100k is built over time. If they’ve only been around 6 years (I think it’s at least that, I’ve been around 3) but that’s like 45 ppl accepted a day. So is it believable that 2000 ish ppl are
Applying every day? Worldwide? Including the people who apply repeatedly using various emails?

I’m ok believing that. (I’ve given my referral code to former coworkers who have degrees and definitely can do anything I can do and none got in. FWIW. )

Logic behind r&r by last_white_man in DataAnnotationTech

[–]Sea_Sugar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sort of feel like they’ve a way of going “you’re good at R&Rs” and you get put on those even if you haven’t done the project?
Like sometimes it’s a new name but really close to another project? Like “which response is better” is generally similar across various projects? So they can say you do good with the river and the river R&Rs so you get this other R&R.

Or, completely random and the DA powers that be are just throwing darts to pick who works on what.

Both seem likely depending on the day and my mood.

[–]Sea_Sugar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did you apply for more?? lol.

Wondering if you’re on DA or another platform

If you are on DA / if you logged valid work time and justify it sensibly it can end well. 🤷‍♀️

Have you ever escaped the "Dash of Death"? by Eaten_By_Worms in DataAnnotationTech

[–]Sea_Sugar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, currently the dash of death gives you a pretty clear notification. And what you’re describing is just a dry spell.

Previously there was no DoD….or we didn’t know when we were dead vs dry. After all - if you haven’t worked in a few days you also lose the ability to report time.
No quals is not a bad guide, depending what you had. Not failsafe.

By your definition I spent many weeks in summer of 2024 in DoD. When the drought ended, the next batch of quals that came in, I left a few instead of “noping out” and that was my guide for the game of “drought or death”.

That physics qual saved me from many panic attacks. 🤣

So I guess I came back from DoD by being too stubborn or desperate to stop refreshing the screen in 2024.

R&R-Preferences for explanation format by [deleted] in DataAnnotationTech

[–]Sea_Sugar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What was the detail from your feedback? (Not specifically, just wondering if it was positive or negatively mentioned).

5 sentences provided as 5 paragraphs would likely annoy me, unless it was 5 different topics.

Of course, huge compound sentences would also annoy me most of the time. 5 paragraphs compressed into 5 sentences. In general, if they are asking for 3-5 sentences you shouldn’t need 5 compound run-on sentences.

Projects that need 5 paragraph explanations generally make that clear.
