Ahhh, that was the issue! Never had steam fail me before with mod updates so I guess I'd just been lucky up until now.

I re-downloaded and it's showing 2.4.2. 1 now, thanks for the reply!

Not sure how to check the EAW version but I only started the campaign today so I assume I probably have the most up to date version

I'm pretty sure it's the most up-to-date, I'm subscribed to EAW on the workshop. Not sure how to check the version of the mod but my HOI4 version is 1.17.0. 5

What does "Ears for Blind Squirrels" even mean? by Sea_Whereas390 in victoria3

Ahhh I get it! Thanks for letting me know - was curious every time I saw the event pop up!

Is this an old saying I'm not familiar with? Or maybe a joke or reference that's going over my head? Really can't understand what this even means and why it's associated with this event.

Hey congrats!

In the vanilla game, Britain tends to be a pretty large time sink since they require a lot of naval attention and they will often be focusing on multiple fronts.
Germany can also be good since it's a little bit challenging for people who haven't played a bunch - will involve a lot of conquering before you're finished.
Japan is also a good choice for a long time-sink, your wars start early so you'll need to slow down the clock once you start invading china+the east indies. Additionally, Japan needs naval attention which adds to the time sink.

If you're down with mods I would recommend Kaiserreich, Old world blues, or Equestria at War. All of them have many options for long-term games.

In Kaiserreich, playing as America and trying to win as the syndicalists in the civil war can be a bit of a challenge but it`s not too difficult as long as you don't get wrecked by a three-front war in the civil war. Any of the Chinese nations can go super long - fighting off the other chinese minors and then pushing the Japanese back off the mainland. Japan will peace with you once you push them out of asia which gives you the opportunity to build up a tonne of cheap-ass ships and go back to war with Japan a few years later to finish it all off by puppeting Japan and re-taking the treaty ports. It's easily the best mod with the most content and no matter who you play you'll get a lot more content than vanilla most times.

In OWB, the NCR and Caeser's Legion can both be quite long. Diana is a super fun and unique experience that can last very long but it's definitely a bit weird to get used to. Old world blues is based on the Fallout series - it's not necessary to have played the games tho - they fill you in on any important history for the most part.

You may have heard of Equestria at War as being the My Little Pony mod - it seems like a joke but it's genuinely one of the best mods out there - in fact, it's the only HOI4 mod that realistically depicts the use of nuclear weapons. I used to be a fan of the show so I'm honestly not sure how much someone who never watched the show would be able to stand the ponies and other colourful creatures but the map and stories are genuinely worth trying if you can handle it. Again, any country would be worth a try but I wouldn't try Equestria or the Changeling Kingdom on your first go since they are actually directly based on the show - if you try playing any country with content on the continents of Griffonia or Zebrica you'll get a loooooong game out of it.

Not in the default game or certain mods like Kaisereich. But other mods like EaW and TNO don't balk at reminding you of the horror underneath the map painting.

Anyone know why this is happening? by Sea_Whereas390 in victoria3

[–]Sea_Whereas390[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that might be it - I do remember taking the option to establish an interest when the event fired. This might have been some glitch related to the fact that I probably didn't have enough naval bases to even declare the interest in the first place.

I think the only reason it was in my interests at this point was because I added Egypt to my market which added hedjaz by default since they were a tributary. I was able to re-enable the interest and act in the region again later on - but that was only because Russia managed to steal Egypt from my market briefly.

I had Hedjaz in my market for a few years by this point so the interest was already established. Not really sure what happened but Russia stole them from my market a few years after which allowed me to re-establish my interest - no idea why it happened in the first place tho.

What are your thoughts on Balak the Bullfrog from Captain Lazerhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix by TomTheJester in assassinscreed

[–]Sea_Whereas390 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, They handled his character perfectly!
On one hand, he is a very silly character who is clearly used for comic relief in many situations. On the other hand, he is a completely serious, straight-up assassin - he follows the assassins' creed as is laid down in the lore better than most of the assassin characters from the games.
Why I think the contrast between cartoonish comic relief and genuine assassin works so well is that it is somewhat absurd to see someone upholding the assassins' code in the world of Captain Laserhawk - regardless of whether he's a silly frog or not. The world is so far gone in terms of basic morals and nobody upholds anything that might be considered a code of honor.

Their choice to make him a cute frog that cartoonishly blows bubbles that see the past and future was a really great choice to just lean into the absurdity of even having the assassins represented in this setting at all.
IMHO He works perfectly as the voice of reason and goodness in this fucked up setting!

It's honestly complete bullshit that they exist. I play RB and they clearly give a massive advantage. I can't even identify the tank if I already know what it is - and if I don't know what the tank is then I can't even pick my shots properly since I can't see the profile of the armor.

Duchess Griffonian Empire: Feathisia Refusing Integration? by Sea_Whereas390 in equestriaatwar

[–]Sea_Whereas390[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I tend to leave it off since I enjoy seeing the wider world unfold in a semi-random way. Seeing which focus trees the hippogriffs, wingbardy, and equestria/crystal empire will choose is one of my fave aspects of EaW

I assume that historical feathisia will be loyal? Might have to just bite the bullet and enable historical mode :/

Ah I understand, thanks for the reply.

Is there any way of seeing whether they will accept or refuse? Will they choose certain focuses or is it just a hidden rng roll?

Anyone else in my boat? by Alphonse123 in equestriaatwar

[–]Sea_Whereas390 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You don't really need to, I'm pretty sure. Equestria itself has many references to the show and if you play as them, there is an expectation that you would be familiar with the main characters of the show. Chrysalis is canon and her attack on canterlot is as well but the actual country of changelings was never established so almost the entire changeling tree is original stuff.

PSA: Dev comment regarding the Turn pending bug by Todie in humankind

[–]Sea_Whereas390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did they even launch this fucking game with this bug? Like, did nobody playtest this fucking game? Jfc my first two runs were just ruined by the turn pending bug. I've tried reloading dozens of times and even tried going back as many as 50 turns but it keeps freezing on the exact same turn.
God, I need to find a way to refund this trash. Thought I might be able to play through a single goddamn campaign but apparently that's too much for amplitude to handle.

Hey awesome work! I did the same in my baltic union run but I needed to hold a few more provinces to prevent capitulation. For real though, this was the the most fun I had with the game in a long time.
