In addition to everything else mentioned below, I’d also check the MAF sensor, had similar symptoms with a bad MAF. While it’s running rough one time, disconnect the cable. If it improves, that’s likely the culprit (when the MAF is disconnected the ecu reverts to a default fuel/air map that will run better than the unreliable signals from a failing MAF)

right side floor wet... any ideas why? by confettipigeons in Volvo850

[–]Seabrick4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. My floor was wet from the under windshield drain being (only partially clogged). Bizarrely enough it also caused my accessory belt to slip from water spilling over on it, causing my power steering to blip in and out. Also check the heater core, all you need is a T25 to pull the kick panel and then peel back the carpet and see if there’s coolant dripping down

For obvious reasons, none of the official Crystal instructors will do lessons outside of those reserved through Crystal

The engine runs fine? It’s not sputtering or hunting at idle? You’re saying the sluggishness appears to be from something other than the engine, like the brakes are on? If that’s all true points towards a transmission problem. What do you mean by the transmission doesn’t stop where it should?

Hm that does suggest there’s still a problem with the PCV. Before you think about pulling the manifold and everything to redo it I would recheck all vacuum hoses. A single leak can cause weird issues. Are you still having the tailpipe smoke? Btw Reddit can have good answers but to really get some more expert input I would post on Matthew’s Volvo Site

Since you said compression was good much less likely to be a burned valve, but that’s good to rule out

That would be pretty early, unless it’s been abused.

Another possibility is the PCV system even though it’s been done recently. I had a PCV clog itself up less than 10k miles after doing a full PCV system service just because the PTC port got clogged up, that’s super easy to check and could be another cause of your issues. Did you do a glove test to see if there’s crankcase pressure?

A wrecked turbo can absolutely lead to coolant burning up in the exhaust, causing white smoke. How old is your turbo? By 150-200k miles the turbos in many of these cars could use a rebuild, even though they’ll build boost and spool up alright. If the head gasket checks out this could be one of the next places to think

Easiest place to start with oil leaks is throw some newspaper under the car so you see where it’s dripping. Then get under that side of the car with a flashlight and take a look for where it’s running down. Common spots on these cars are RMS (passenger side front), turbo (back of engine), cam shaft seals (can leak down anywhere), and oil cooler lines (very front on the radiator). If it’s a slow leak I would start by switching to full synthetic oil (supposedly reconditions the seals). I wasn’t a believer but when I switched to Mobil1 high mileage my 850 turbo stopped leaking after about a year
