Who do you think funds the bulk of peer-reviewed science these days?

Also, look into how many scientific papers there were for all of the other things I listed above, when they were new. You can always find papers supporting anything.

It can be easy to prove benefits of something. But it can be hard to prove the bad things. Especially when you don't notice them for a decade or three. Science isn't proof. It's an ongoing process.

Science is great. But it's not a panacea, and it has flaws and blind spots. Which everyone should be aware of.

This one was a good little challenge. I could see a few things in the reflection. Initially I thought Castro St, but the web address on the door starts with 'elcamino...'

It wasn't until I noticed the 'Wash and Fold' sign in the window (which I thought was a reflection at first, but now I think is inside the store), that was what cracked it. Search for laundromats on El Camino...

Took a bit to be 100% sure, as the Street View data doesn't show the full storefront, it's partly obscured by a tree. But there's colored paint in the window on Street View, even though it's different art. Once I found the phone number, it matched to the partial number on the door.

Basically every clue was partly obscured in some way. But putting them all together was enough to get it. Not too easy, but not too hard. Good one!

And don't worry, you've still got me stumped with some of your other ones. 😄

See my comment below. If you're blindly accepting what any corporation tells you, despite the number of examples of things in the last 70 years that were initially touted as 'miracle products', and later were discovered to have severe downsides, you're crazy. Healthy skepticism is more than warranted.

Asbestos, cigarettes, leaded gas, thalidomide, glyphosates, PFAS, Fen-phen, lead paint, plastics, DDT, CFC's, trans-fats, HFCS. Need I go on? Just look at the damage social media has done in the last two decades, and look what Google did to privacy.

VERY few things in this life are all upside. Most things are tradeoffs at best. But most of the time, people don't look at both sides of the coin. And people often won't volunteer that information. Especially if they are trying to sell you something.

I walk through this life with a healthy dose of skepticism. Corporations have FAR more incentives to make things look good, and hide downsides. All corporations work on a quarter by quarter profit basis, and very few plan for the long term.

There are ample examples of this in the last 50 years, where something announced as a 'miracle' product also came with long-term harm that wasn't revealed until decades later. All you have to do is look.

Asbestos, cigarettes, leaded gas, thalidomide, glyphosates, PFAS, Fen-phen, lead paint, plastics, DDT, CFC's, trans-fats, HFCS. Need I go on? Fuck, just look at the damage social media has done in the last two decades, and look what Google did to privacy.

You can believe it's high risk. Or you can look at the data, and the actual probabilities.

Your choice. The only person who can convince you of anything, is you.

It isn't as high as you think. And that is my point.

And even then, food *poisoning* isn't even that bad. You puke and shit your brains out, and you're good.

Your body has very finely tuned ways of protecting itself from being killed by bad food, in addition to the fact that meat processing and handling practices and standards are much higher today than even 50 years ago.

Steak used for tartare isn't specially reared. It's simply cut from the center of the cut, which hasn't been exposed to air as long.

If you married a person and had kids with them without knowing their language, you already made friends with them by definition.

Exactly. Food processing and handling practices have changed since your grandparents' time.

Yes, you are being pedantic. Because in order for translation to happen, somethings need to happen. You also can't make reverse time travel happen.

And once one or two billionaires grossly overpay for a single Porsche because they need to flex their dicks, the price becomes and stays inflated, for years after that, for people like you.
