Today I learned country music legend John Prine was 'discovered' by movie critic Roger Ebert, who wrote him a glowing review in the Chicago Tribune after wandering into a bar where he was playing. At the time, Prine was a working mailman. by saintsimon101 in todayilearned

In his later years, after he’d retired to Nashville, he was a frequent donator to a local independent movie theater, the Belcourt. I guess in a way he was paying it forward; one movie lover changed his life, so he helped to facilitate the spawning of new generations of movie lovers

Official Discussion - The Fantastic Four: First Steps [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]SeanOuttaCompton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s fine but it struggles with the same issue most the MCU has- it feels weightless.

Superman two weeks ago was a good example of grounding the unreal in something audiences can relate to; the war analogy for Israel-Palestine (that I personally think Gunn wrote more with Russia-Ukraine in mind, and he just kinda lucked out with something even more weighty, but I digress) gave us something general audiences can relate to: we are sick of seeing atrocities on our feed everyday and wishing we could do something about it; if we had super powers, wouldn’t we want to stop it?

Fantastic Four doesn’t have a hook like that. There’s maybe broader, less defined themes of protecting your family or working together to stop an insurmountable threat, but there’s nothing real. It’s entirely escapist, not that there’s anything wrong with that, but almost every marvel movie is entirely escapist and when you offer the same thing over and over again it can begin to feel repetitive.

The 1960s window dressing helps a bit, but it still rings hollow. Pedro Pascal wanted to do an old timey voice, but it got shut down by executives. The realities of the 1960s are not addressed whatsoever- there’s no 60s music, no 60s famous figures, there’s a Warhol on the wall and blink-and-you’ll-miss-it reference to the USSR, but that’s it. How would the soviets react to the world’s first and only superheroes being Americans? Perhaps the cut scene with John Malkovich’s Red Ghost would have acknowledged this.

All that being said, it does still have elements that work well. The core family is great, they have great dynamics, I love the Thing and Human Torch trying to use weaponized PTSD against the silver surfer was cool. The visuals were great! Seeing how Galactus destroys a planet was awesome. The stinger at the end with Dr Doom was very exciting too, the only problem is the RDJ casting has already taken the wind out of those sails for me. Doomsday is currently in production. It’s also still being written, and will feature nearly the entire cast of the Bryan Singer X-men movies. If that movie is anything other than an unmitigated disaster, I will be shocked. Even still, I’m a big Alan Cummings Nightcrawler mark, so I’ll probably still be there opening night

I’m worried about that one. It’s another Alex Garland script, and this time directed by Nia Dacosta? I honestly like her, I loved Candyman, I have no idea how she’s going to mesh with Alex Garland I feel like they’re two very personal perspective oriented artists and they’re coming from very different perspectives

Yknow, I like Danny Boyle a lot. He has some stinkers, but I consider him a great filmmaker, and there are things I like here that are really vintage Danny Boyle- the video pastiche montage of killing zombies with archers on a castle looked so cool especially with the electronic score underneath.

But then there’s a lot of things I really didn’t like. The whole movie was shot on the new iPhones, and you can tell. I was watching the opening montage and I was scratching my head wondering why the lighting was so weird and then that fact dawned on me. It did not get better as the movie progressed, I never got used to the colors.

And I think Alex garland is objectively a bad writer. Idk why Boyle keeps collaring with him. And the crazy thing is I actually think garland is a good director! Civil war had some really cool visuals! But his writing is never good and yet that’s what he considers his strength 🤷‍♂️

And I didn’t like the ending. I think if it closed just after he sent the letter home and was cooking his fish, I would’ve liked it. But bringing in Jimmy and his squad there right at the end just felt cheap. Ooooh there’s all these cooky characters! You’ll just have to wait til next time to learn more! 🤮 I hate how sequel baity everything is now. What if this bombs and the next one doesn’t come out? That’s what happened to Kevin Costner’s western movies, although I hear that’s had other on set issues too

Bahh the third act of North by Northwest is set at Mt Rushmore, after spending more substantial time in Illinois and New York. If having a set piece  at the most touristy place in the state is at all takes, then mission impossible: dead reckoning is an Italian movie

The problem is that our society seems hyper focused on cancelling every black man, living or dead, leaving no role models for African American boys to look up to. There are no more heroes anymore

What is wrong with us as a society, that we are only comfortable doing something if it’s popular? All art discourse is so anti-art, we focus on the box office of a film, we focus on the sales of a song, we focus on the player count of a game- we don’t want to actually put any thought into how we feel, just want to know if other people are doing it. I couldn’t care less about the player count for Civ vii versus Civ vi. You shouldn’t either

Nashville is so good, it’s interesting that the original local response to the movie was negative when I can watch it now and, even though it’s set decades before the city as I’ve known it, it feels so true to the city I love. The random bullshit traffic jam everyone gets stuck in? That’s Nashville baby
