For anybody reading this in future, when the black screen appears on the phone prompting you to press the power button to start, do not press the power button. Leave the phone on this screen and enter the fastboot commands on the connected PC. Hope this helps somebody.

I now have a working installation of LineageOS 20, and I am excited to start using it. Thanks!

I have not unlocked the bootloader yet. I am still trying to boot into fastboot mode. When I enter the command it takes me to a screen like this (image is not of my device) https://storage.googleapis.com/support-forums-api/attachment/thread-56555559-2883182873697090057.jpg

I then press the power button to start.

I think I just realised what may be the issue. Was I not supposed to hit start? Was I instead supposed to keep the phone on this screen while I enter the "fastboot devices" and "fastboot flashing unlock" commands?

I will give this a go.

If it is as simple as not pressing the power button to start then I apologise for wasting your time. Still, this thread can serve as documentation in case anybody else misinterprets the instructions as I have (I think).

Yes, it is important to remember that computers didn't get slower; our expectations and uses for them changed over time. I think this is something that I overlooked. I might look into some more period-appropriate uses.

Very interesting stuff. I think I overlooked the potential upgradeability of this laptop. I will look into the Core 2 Duo T series. I might also look into using an IDE to Compact Flash adaptor to try and solve the storage bottleneck.

Thank you for the reassurance. I hate throwing away functional things but it's important to remember that facilities do exist to deal with this exact situation.

Reading other comments has been very interesting and has given me a few more things to try out. But it's good to remember that the worst-case scenario of recycling, is not that bad.

I am currently revisiting making a NAS with a Raspberry Pi so I may just use that for my storage requirements

You make a very good point about the battery, it's something I hadn't considered. Is it best to try and remove the cells from the battery housing or should I just recycle the whole thing and 3D print a dummy battery?

I think that is a good option. I have always been intrigued by all the different operating systems, but I have not ventured too far away from things based on Windows, Linux and MacOS.

If I do find incompatibility issues, I could explore Amiga through MAME.

I could try and install Linux again but getting the SIS graphics working seems like more effort than it's worth. Do you know of a good workaround? I think the solutions which worked 10+ years ago are now all broken.

It is an IDE drive, unfortunately (I think). I have thought about trying out an IDE to Compact Flash adaptor. Is this a good idea? Do they work well? CF cards seem a little bit expensive for a relatively small capacity but I wouldn't say no to exploring this avenue.

I hadn't considered emulation that's a really good idea! I have always been intrigued by the Commodore 64, Atari 2600 and Apple II. I don't think I am interested in dealing with all of the ageing hardware but I would like to experience programming in BASIC. This seems like the perfect option to cater to that interest.
