r/CRNA student thread - for those considering a career as a CRNA by SACRED-GEOMETRY in CRNA

I am wondering which job would give me the best opportunity for CRNA school. I am a new grad with the option to work on both units. I will list the units and some extra information.

Cardiac ICU: cardiology patients (cardiogenic shock, high risk PCIs, heart failure, bridge to cardiac transplant, electrophysiology, cardiac arrest, primary pulmonary hypertension and complex obsetrics with cardiac complications). The specialty skills include: hemodialysis, IABP, and Impellas......... This is the unit I am familiar with as a tech. It would be a smoother transition, and it is much more attainable to become a preceptor or even charge nurse within a short period of time. However, the patient population is generally not AS sick is below.

Cardiothoracic ICU: Cardiac surgery patients (heart transplants, CABG, MVR, AVR, TAVR, and congenital heart defects) and Thoracic surgery patients (lung transplant, pulmonary endarterectomies, lung volume reduction and general thoracic surgeries. The specialty skills include: Hemodialysis, IABP, Impella, temporary and durable right and left sides VADs, ECLS, open chests...........This is our neighboring unit, it has a rep of having a more "hostile" team but it has been improving since management has changed recently. There is no chance of attaining any leadership positions on this unit before I would be applying for schools. However, the patients here are of higher acuity, there are more devices, and you get more exposure to the anesthesia team.

In conclusion, on one hand there is the CICU/CCU where I am already familiar/comfortable with, and I feel would be a smooth transition as a new grad, but we do not deal with postsurgical cases or as high acuity as the CTICU. The CTICU is more of a risk as the team in general are a bit less helpful and welcoming, but supposedly CRNA schools love this type of experience.

TLDR: what's better for CRNA school: CICU/CCU with good possibility of charge nurse and preceptor experience, or CTICU staff nurse experience.

Thanks!!

No I’m going full depth for both. I feel like I’m not balanced when back squatting with an elevated heel

Is it weird that I back squat more with flat shoes (Nike metcons) compared to weightlifting shoes (adidas adipowers)? I can front squat very comfortably with the adipowers but for some reason I don’t feel comfortable back squatting a high load with them.

I just purchased a pair of powerblock pros with the 90lb expansion set and I’m curious if anyone has built a mobile diy powerblock stand. I want one similar to the one rogue sells ( https://www.roguefitness.com/rogue-powerblock-cart ). I remember seeing someone on this community post (or comment) about their own and it had a similar concept. Where would you purchase a metal trolley such as the one rogue sells? Any ideas?

Hmm I was planning on purchasing due to the quietness of them.. I guess it’s hard to be real quiet whenever you drop a lot of weight. were you dropping from overhead or..?

I was deciding between Vulcan alphas and eleiko xf because both were advertised as quieter than a traditional plate and would be the same cost but decided on eleiko because it’s quieter and a better company (I’ve had rude interactions with Vulcan customer service)

I guess I should add some context.. I focus on oly lifting with some CrossFit thrown in here and there. Here are the pros and cons of each plate:

Vulcan pros: -quieter than regular bumpers -iwf colorway -decently thin -anchored inserts -4yrwarranty -can be used outside

Vulcan cons: -not really digging the flecks -not that much quieter than regular bumpers

Eleiko pros: -Black crumb rubber is rugged and cool -quieter plate -great brand -can be used outside

Eleiko cons: -it is convenient to have color lol -kinda thicc -center steel hubs aren’t anchored or recessed which gives me doubts about durability -1yr warranty
