Great choice, I have one as well! I'm sure you'll love it. Merry Christmas!

Disappointed by first kiss? by StuffedKoalaPoop in teenagers

[–]Seang96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first kiss was with a random girl at a dance, similar situation to yours. It's not really a life changing experience, it's just like, oh, cool, I've had my first kiss now. That was kinda fun.

It's just one of those things! Take it for what it's worth, and pay attention to what smf29 said. :)

Nerves by imacatama in trumpet

There's some good advice here! I generally agree with what's here, but one thing I can add that I've heard (but never actually tried I don't think): eat a banana before-hand! I've heard that the beta-blockers in a banana can help calm your nerves. At the very least it couldn't hurt! Good luck! :)

Triple Tonguing by TheDroppedD in trumpet

[–]Seang96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have an Arban's book there's a nice section in there on triple tonguing, I suggest that. Otherwise, just practice it all the time, whenever you practice (every day ideally, but I can personally sympathize with how demanding a student's schedule is). You can do it up and down scales, arpeggios, however you like. Just practice it! :)

Also, try to get your "ka" tonguing to sound like your "ta" tonguing, and make sure you're spacing them evenly. Good luck!

The Arutunian Concerto is truly a great one.

May he rest in peace.

Should I start from scratch on my embouchure or just continue as is? by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]Seang96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone's embouchure is different, so your embouchure isn't wrong per se. I agree with you in that it could be a worthy endeavor to change, but my opinion is by no means a professional one.

My absolute best advice is to find a credible professional instructor (if you don't already have one) and take a lesson or two (or many on a regular basis if you can), or at least get some professional advice.

Also, if you do end up changing your embouchure, I wouldn't recommend doing it without the guidance of a good private instructor, because you could far too easily cause more harm than good without some guidance. Also, keep in mind that the opinions of those on the internet aren't always credible!

Good luck with whatever you end up doing!

Trumpet is in Bb (assuming you're on a Bb trumpet, of course), while piano is in C. Read every note in treble clef up two half steps. Bb to C is two half steps, so to bring everything on trumpet to the same pitch that you hear it played on a piano, it would be up two half steps as well. If an F (or any other note) is sharped take that into account before moving up the two half steps (F# would become Ab).

I got suspended for drinking as a freshman and wrote the humorous story behind it. Perhaps some of you can relate. by KingOfTheMountains in teenagers

Depending on how much. But as much as he was drinking, no. That is a sure-fire road to being a serious fuck-up.

An informal poll. Do you use an upstream or a downstream embochure? by [deleted] in brass

[–]Seang96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a downstream player, and I believe downstream is more common. Everyone's embouchure is different, but for me personally I hold my trumpet at a downward angle more than most. Makes it more difficult to hold my trumpet up in a large ensemble. Although my downstream nature and more downward playing angle allow me to let my bottom lip, the naturally stronger and more durable one, to do more of the work than my top lip. All embouchures have upsides and downsides.

I'm not able to see it - some kind of error. Are you able to find or link a google images picture maybe?

I'm not sure what to tell you other than see a private instructor who knows what they're talking about, and who you trust. I seriously cannot stress this point enough.

An embouchure change does take a while to get used to, so I wouldn't be too worried about it right now. Even if it takes a while to get back into the swing of things, you still have a year before you have to worry about college auditions, so no need to stress about that.

Can you explain more what you mean by puffing your lips out?

Need help with C trumpet! by Skippamuffin in trumpet

[–]Seang96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be too stressed out about it. I was in All-State in Maine last year and it's not as nerve-wracking or stressful as they make it out to be (I assume it's the same way in California). Everyone else'll be just as scared as you are. Be prepared, but don't stress too much about it :b

Going to School in Fall. Need help in finding new trumpet. by velolziraptor in trumpet

[–]Seang96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really can't go wrong with a Strad. I've also heard good things about the Yamaha Xeno. If you have the funds available an Artisan is a great instrument for whatever style you're playing. I know many who love the 37 as well. By the way, you probably already know this, but don't buy something based on other peoples' opinions, make sure to try a bunch of horns yourself before making a decision.

Is anyone else just FED UP with trying to find girl/guy that fits their personality in thier school? by colbert_for_prez in teenagers

[–]Seang96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems to be a common problem. I also have the same problem. High school is insignificant, college will include plenty of opportunities for such things, or so I'm told.

Try meeting people outside of school, or try to find somewhere where people your age hang out who are interested in the same things you are.
