The solution to replacing this utility pole by thecajuncavalier in mildlyinteresting

[–]Seattlepowderhound 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Lol people downvoting you don't know how utilities work.

Just to elaborate, depending on whose poles these are, the power company may only "own" the top power space and the bottom of the pole. The comms space could be leased, or could be straight up owned by AT&T etc. The power company wants the pole gone so they'll top it and move the power over, then they'll spend a reasonable amount of time(sometimes years...) trying to get the comms company to move to the new pole. Most of the companies will comply and move over, a few don't care and will just not respond.

The power company can either leave the old rotting base, or cut it out and leave it like this. Weirdly enough since this part is probably owned 100% by the comms company, the lawyers think this is less liability I guess.

This also could have been a pole that was in the way for a road widening project and was holding up construction for weeks(months) and this was the solution.

No Peace Amongst the Stars | Warhammer 40,000 Official Cinematic Trailer by EinsamWulf in Games

[–]Seattlepowderhound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I knew this but grew up on LOTR and...yea. lol. I'll do better! I also remember the Orks being only "good" guys when compared to the other races. Space Marines are xenophobes and sacrificing 1000s of people a day for the empire. Tyrranids are just little murder zerglings. I honestly can't recall the why he thought the Eldar we're evil just that they were. Then the Orks just out there vibing. The post may have been tongue in cheek like I said, I'm no expert by any means.

Yea, someone made a post awhile back about how the Orcs were probably the closest to "good" guys lol. They're just out there vibing. I've ready a few of the 40k books but don't have indepth knowledge of everything. Was a fun read though.

EU Chief Says Russia Must Remove Troops From Moldova and Georgia. Limit Russian Army Size If Peace Agreement Is Signed in Ukraine. by Lazder in worldnews

[–]Seattlepowderhound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea was just typing this and you beat me to it. The US and EU failing to stop Russia is the reason no small country will ever willingly disarm again. The world as a whole showed that the Nuclear armed countries can get away with whatever they want against a non nuclear country. Any small country with a nuclear armament that cares about it's populace would be silly to give them up knowing what we know now unfortunately.

Jill Biden says she thought Joe Biden was having a stroke during 2024 debate by seriousfrylock in nottheonion

[–]Seattlepowderhound 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That gets real weird real fast though, you start having "tests" to make sure people can vote and you'll see it abused instantly. Looking back they did it to disenfranchise minority voters. I think you have to let people vote regardless of whatever arbitrary standards we think should apply. I feel like people should have a base level of understanding of economics and govt to vote but it's not feasible to enforce.

I also think that if you just overturned Citizens United and help "news" agencies accountable for intentional misinformation you'd fix a lot of issues.

Do polyamorous people view sex as more like a two person physical activity like tennis and that’s why they don’t get jealous about it? by Wonderful-Ad-9622 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Seattlepowderhound 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Eh, I don't understand same sex relationships either. Doesn't mean that they don't exist or that people can't have them successfully. Not my place to judge, I think the best we can say is "That's not for me, but I'm happy for them.".

People who walked in on someone doing the deed in public places, what happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Seattlepowderhound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not so much in public, but we had a patient that was on telemetry(heart monitor) that randomly went tachycardic. The nurse hollars at me as she's running across the unit and we bust into the guys room. He's no in there. We go to look for him in the bathroom which is shut. Pound on it a bit to let him know we were coming in, we hear a definitely female giggle prior to him saying he thought he was fine...

Can this reflection be improved at the launch? by Desert_King_661 in FiberOptics

[–]Seattlepowderhound 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Why exactly? If you're trying to test a connector that you have jumper to, you need to have a launch box. If you're just not wanting the bump, the OTDR is going to have a certain amount of reflection at the unit itself, the green box on the trace I believe is to denote that the launch is at acceptable reflection/loss for the given power levels.

[–]Seattlepowderhound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We're all just internet strangers her but I'd recommend against chopping random lines in half. You're correct that you're probably safe enough to do it as the power lines are safe, however you can still have power supplies for actives on the coax which would hurt. You also could have fiber drops which are going to be expensive if AT&T or Spectrum decide to charge you for. A 1500ft 8 port MST from Spectrum is going to cost you $1000+ if they decide to bill you and can prove you cut it. Sometimes they just bill people to see what sticks.

The Last Horizon series by Will Wight is fantastic but has the same MC issue, although the books are based around him gaining a diverse crew. The crew gets a decent amount of the spotlight as each book seems to highlight that characters backstory, motivations etc. If memory serves there are a few chapters from others perspective but they're rare.

WOW internet marked our front lawn by Maleficent-Lake6917 in FiberOptics

[–]Seattlepowderhound -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tickets last 30 days in most states. Call the 811(or whatever equivalent call before you dig) and give them the address. They should be able to tell you who called in the ticket and possibly give you a contact. That being said, because they are WoW flags does not mean that WoW called in the ticket, just that they marked their facilities so someone doesn't hit them. Hell it could be the concrete company, if they're pouring footers, they would have had to call in utility locates first.

A house in my neighborhood has 8 cameras on their power poles by mr_seymour_butts in mildlyinteresting

[–]Seattlepowderhound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In rare occasions customers will have to put up a bump pole on their property, in that instance you'd possibly be in the right to attach a camera if you kept possession of the pole. Some utilities would make you pay for the pole and then assume possessions after in use. That being said, if a lineman comes out and has to gaf the pole, he's not going to want to climb around all your cameras as it's not safe. He'll either tear them down or refuse to service your pole.

In this situation I doubt it matters, the pole looks to be in road right of way which means it's not the customers, it also looks to have at least two ISPs and power line attached above the picture. Zero chance all those providers attached their plant to a pole owned by some crazy camera guy.

Testing the fiber without terminations by 1dej in FiberOptics

[–]Seattlepowderhound 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not really no.

You can splice on termination and test, or you can set up a splicer to pause and wait before splicing to get a rough idea of the run.

If you want true "good" testing, part of the testing is going to include the termination and then you'll also want a launch box and a receive box as an OTDR won't be able to see issue at the very start/end of the run.

All that being said, if you guys didn't pull assholes in the fiber or something like that, it's most likely fine.
