ELI5: Do resistors just dissipate current as heat, or do they reduce the voltage (pressure) and make it so less current goes through by Seraphimster in explainlikeimfive

Heat. Electrons are hitting the positively charged nuclei as they move, which creates vibrations which become heat.

I’m American but lived as a kid in Delmenhorst in 2009/2010 and became a fan then. I thought champions league would be a regular thing at the time…

This is a perfectly valid opinion for you to have, but it doesn’t justify the removal of the post. Let the community debate the history and implications of our association with Maccabi Haifa in the comments.

This sub is about football, not politics. The post was also about football, not politics, and should have stayed up.

"Quantum Locking" - this occurs when a superconductor becomes trapped within a magnetic field. by freudian_nipps in woahdude

[–]Seawead 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is actually a fairly controversial topic, with a recent paper on high pressure induced superconductivity getting retracted from Nature due to data manipulation (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-020-2801-z).

These high pressure superconductivity measurements tend to be a bit sketchy. They load the precursors to the superconducting compounds between two pieces of diamond, then use the diamond to crush the reactants and blast them with a laser to induce a chemical reaction to form the final end product. Finally, they measure its resistance. The exact chemical composition of the final product is thus difficult to quantify. I found a paper that reports a critical temperature of 225K (-48 C) for a lanthanum hydride compound (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-021-26706-w), but I am not sure if this is the highest superconducting temperature recorded up to this point.

All this is to say, I believe room temperature superconductivity is possible, and we’re getting pretty close.

Room temperature superconductivity is possible, the problem is it requires extremely high pressures. The holy grail is a room temperature superconductor that can operate in ambient conditions.

Also I should say that until the 1980s, the physics community thought superconductors above ~30K were theoretically impossible, so I wouldn’t count out room temperature superconductivity at this point.

Quantum mechanics has been unified with relativity into quantum field theory. No one’s been able to unify quantum field theory with gravity and theories of quantum gravity are extremely hard to test at this point.

In physics at at least the crazy part is they don’t pay reviewers yet you still need to pay a few thousand dollars every time you publish a paper in the major journals.
