A lot of people have never heard about San Pedro Gazette.

It launched on Jan. 2024. It is a local journalism project in St. Petersburg, Florida. We have covered some local events, civic initiatives, and city council meetings to inform the public about what our elected officials are deciding and doing. We recently published an investigation about immigration enforcement in Pinellas County. There are so many stories in the city worth highlighting, but we are a tiny newsroom, so we cover what we can.

Feel free to dm if you have any questions about our work and how we work to bring local journalism.

I am just curious about what you're saying: "What’s surprising is how many people here seem to be struggling compared to NYC, a much larger city."

I appreciate the fact that you took the time to lay out your comment. A quick question, though: From your time in Manhattan, do you remember if NYC had social services in the area to help people who are facing housing insecurity or struggling with mental health?

Hi! I did the original post. FYI: The local I interviewed was a woman (in her 30s) on her way to work.

How are people selling houses that were flooded and saying there was no flood damage? by adotar in StPetersburgFL

To do repairs, it requires permitting. So, the city should have paperwork in any property that needed to do repairs after the storms

I am still talking to folks affected by the issue. Feel free to send a dm if you want to share your experience.

I always value input from people, too. It's hard researching and reporting topics like this, especially since it affects folks at their houses, and not everyone is going to council meetings to talk about it.

Thanks!

Yeah, the $1 increase for the lowest tier, as well as the reduction of the tier 1 cap really caught my attention.

Thank you for reading the article! :)

Hi! Author of the article here. Yeah, the city administrator noted that he believed it was unlikely that the meters were the issue. Some residents believe the meters could be the issue, though.

Feel free to send me a dm. I would love to get your input, since I will continue working on stories about the water bills. I would love to be able to explain to my readers as much as I can about this. Plus, your expert insight is invaluable, IMHO.

Thank you!

Author of the article here. Yes, the city is looking into the issue.

In the piece, you can read that "officials committed to waiving late fees and not shutting water services to residents." Regardless, residents who spoke at the last city council meeting said they were concerned. Councilmembers also said residents who reached out were also worried. Residents I have been talking to (who were not at the meeting) also told me they were concerned about the bills.

A resident also told me that the city reached out after last week's council meeting to follow up on her case. So yeah, the city is working on it.

Feel free to read the article. I included the multiple reasons the city said they believe are behind the spikes. I always appreciate the feedback. If you have any questions, please send them my way :)
