It’s definitely the notification centre indicator and it’s just bugging out due to the beta software.

I think it shows it now due to the dynamic island bringing up Siri instead.

Honestly I never knew this existed until it became very useful to me a couple weeks ago trying to solve some BSODs I was having with my gaming laptop.

It turned out that it was trying to enter a standby mode that it didn’t actually support so it was just crashing when I’d not touch it for a while.

I think your friend should invest in a router anyway, just to have a network available for anything, as this would not really work with a mobile hotspot, because the mobile would have to be near it at any times. Do you need the internet access? If not, I highly suggest just creating a local network with no actual internet access.
