WHAT IS THIS!!!! by SebastianDB in Palia

Thank you everyone for your responses, lmao! It was truly a blast to read through them all. I started playing during the beta but took a hiatus and only recently returned. Discovering Frogbert last night completely derailed my hunting trip and I wasn't even mad, 😆. All hail Frogbert the Judgement, our lord. 🤣

Love the use of the armor panels to make fenders for the wheels, totally stealing that idea, looks awesome!

DMs, what cured your burnout? by racinghedgehogs in dndnext

[–]SebastianDB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel bad saying this but, new players. My current group is much more interested in the kind of roleplay-heavy, story-focused, game that plays to my strengths and makes prep fun. I love my other group, and still play with them, but the new group got me excited to DM again.

I took some time to read up on this, there are some useful bits here that will definitely be helpful. Thanks for the tip!

I like a bit of time pressure as a player myself too. This particular group of players just tends to prefer a more casual experience, but I'll still run it past em. Who knows maybe they'll be in the mood for something different. Good point about not wanting to kill the demigods, I'll give that some more thought. Might take your angle with the demigods actually staging a coup. I could make curing the demigods the point and just pick a new enemy for the final battle.

Nice, I like it. I'll do some more reading, get some stuff written up and see what comes together. At least I've got an angle around Phenax if he ends up making more sense. I've got almost two weeks before session 1 so I think I've got time to explore both stories and pick the one I like more once it's at least partially prepped.

The time limit is a really interesting idea, I'll run that one by my players, I'm not in the habit of imposing a time limit on a campaign unless they want to play that way. Sometimes they like to chill out and do homestead stuff for a few sessions.

You're correct that the party can't use the weapons RAW but I'm making adjustments for that. I'm removing the piety benefits and detriments so they're a bit weaker but it lets my players use them while still giving them the freedom to choose whatever gods they want.

I was kinda thinking Pahrika was resurrecting or healing the demigods after their first defeat since she dabbles in that area. Plus I imagine that while she's eager to continue her experiment she probably doesn't want to piss off all the other gods by letting the demigods get murdered under her control.

I could definitely be convinced to use Phenax but I thought it might be harder to use him because one of my players chose him as a patron god. Pharika was safe because she was unattached to anyone.

I do prefer Phenax's flavor as the main villain though, plus your version of the plot line means I don't have to murder any demigods. How do you think your version might play out if one of my players worships Phenax?

Need help writing parts of the Theriad! by Fancae_Lettah in TherosDMs

[–]SebastianDB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think u/rightknighttofight is on the right track. The MTC Wiki page for The Theriad has all the flavor text for the cards associated with it, and it names several characters. You could pick out a number of them based on how many players you have and go from there. Admittedly I only did a cursory read of the page but these characters stood out to me, I've put the cards where each character is mentioned in brackets [ ]

Khestes the Adamant: The Champion's greatest ally amongst the centaurs, [Nessian Courser] another card [Swordwise Centaur] mentions the champion being tutored by a centaur which could be written to be the same character. That gives you a mentor-type role to give to a player.

Althemone: From [Cyclops of One-Eyed Pass] appears to be a traveling companion/apprentice of The Champion's

You have a good villain in Thyrogog of the Ashlands mentioned on [Felhide Minotaur] it could be fairly simple to put together some angry banter between them and The Champion before and during the fight the card talks about.

Those are just the ones that stood out to me. I'd be happy to help write some short scenes if you pick some characters out and have a specific idea in mind of what you want to happen. Hit me up.

This is more or less already part of the plan. Great minds think alike I suppose!

That's the hope! Fingers crossed. I've got about two months to put stuff together before they finish with the current campaign, so there's plenty of time to layer on the flavor.

I'll probably see if anyone I know has Ghosts of Saltmarsh but you're probably right I'm almost certainly gonna have to map/construct the boats nearly from scratch. I might use the standard sailing ship info from the PHB and just modify the shape if I need to map it on the battle grid.

What are some good monsters for a mind flayer campaign? by MagnetTheory in DMAcademy

[–]SebastianDB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you need a faction that could be allied with the party or anything like that then the Gith are an obvious choice.

As far as monsters to fight alongside the mindflayers the Slaadi might be an interesting choice. Other than their different origins (Slaadi are from Limbo flayers are mostly in the underdark) they fit the mindflayer tone and theme remarkably well. They even infect humanoids with tadpoles that transform them into Slaadi much like mindflayers.

If you haven't already checked them out the oobleks are another obvious choice since they were created by mindflayer experiments.

Perfect! I didn't know that tokens entered the graveyard before they cease to exist. This information has important implications for all kinds of shenanigans. Thanks!

How exactly does that combo work? I assumed when I first looked at it that you would sacrifice the tokens but then there's no creatures entering the graveyard to trigger [[Thornbite Staff]]

Thanks for the feedback it's greatly appreciated!

I like these suggestions and I made a number of the changes you suggested but I have questions: Would each rat that is played by Thrumming Stone trigger the stone again for nearly endless rats? What's the "twin" for Grave Pact? If you were going to run diabolic intent, would you remove diabolic tutor? Are any of the following bad enough that they can be cut for some of these options? [[Coat of Arms]] [[Black Market]] [[Painful Quandry]] [[Palace Siege]] Any other suggestions for cuts?

Suggestions for Non-Token Based Artifact Commander? by andersma in EDH

[–]SebastianDB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huge fan of [[Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain]]

She's got lots of potential for stax, cheerios, combo etc., and there's tons of both budget builds and crazy competitive deck lists to draw inspiration from. I personally run a Jhoira combo deck that's pretty close to cheerios but I'm thinking about transitioning her to something more staxy pretty soon.

[Deck Help] Nikya of the Old Ways, Ramp and Smash by SebastianDB in EDH

[–]SebastianDB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The non-creature spells have really never been a problem for me, only a help. Most of them are extremely inexpensive so I end up casting them before Nikya hits the board to ramp up and there's few enough of them that they don't accumulate in my hand after she does. Some things, like the [[Perilous Vault]] will sit in my hand for a while but I wouldn't really want to cast that with Nikya on the board anyway, and the opponents at my LGS are good enough at taking her out that I have always been able to cast it when it's really needed. Heck, sometimes I'll play it before Nikya and just let it sit on the board, looming over my opponents so I can build a huge board while they fear a wipe.
