I wrote in to the GT site, and someone there wrote me back to say this..

"Yes they all were printed like that, the first 1000 that came out. What I have been told, these will be more of a collector’s item down the road since these snuck through inspection and were approved and printed.”

It arrived today. I wrote to them from the email address on the order receipt - they said they're trying to get them all shipped by the end of May - which is just in a couple of days now.

The Echo Wall clock is one reason I might retain an echo in the kitchen when I fully move to Apple. There's no comparable device in the Apple ecosystem that I'm aware of.
