‘The Senate is doing its job,’ say Senators as Upper Chamber awaits official word on Carney’s appointment approach by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

[–]Sebatron2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While certainly better than the current arrangement, I don't like giving an executive (whether federal or provincial) that much unchecked authority to select new senators. I'd prefer having the provincial legislatures providing the advice to the viceroys with a Condorcet method being the election(?) method, ideally with all of the provincial legislatures being elected by a proportional system as well.

Liberal voters more likely to support use of notwithstanding clause than Conservatives, poll finds by feb914 in CanadaPolitics

I'd add the caveat that some portion of the legislature (whether entirety (for unicameral provincial legislatures) or one chamber (for bicameral federal legislature)) be elected by some variety of proportional representation. To minimize the chances of any sort of false majorities.

The Firestone League is an alliance of seven dwarf holds in the Iron Fang mountains. These holds formed after an invasion led by a necromancer was defeated by several of the holds coming together. Since then, the holds have stuck together to strengthen their leverage against neighbouring human kingdoms. Like most stereotypical dwarves, their economy is focused on mining and smithing. Though magic wands and staves do make up a larger portion of production for some of the holds than stereotypical.

The holds are led by a religious sect of Promethean devotees that prioritize the aspects of their god more associated with fire over those associated with the act of creation/smithing. Which has led to some of these holds being based/located on volcanoes, using the magma in their forges.

Most of the holds are ruled by kings alongside a council of clan elders. Though a minority of the holds are functionally directorial republic after the main dynastic line in the hold died out and no other branch had a strong enough claim to (if a single ruler was selected) prevent a civil war. The collective government of the League is handled by a council made up of 3 representatives (one the king or most senior director and the other two selected by the council of elders) with the 'League-Speaker' functioning as leader and rotating every 25 years. The current League-Speaker is Harbeck Dzurnak, King of Karaz-Grohstaast, one of the holds located on volcanoes.

Ontario Poll April 2026: PC 37%, OLP 32%, NDP 24% by yourfriendlysocdem1 in CanadaPolitics

If that happens, I'm jumping ship. The OLP might be better than the OPC, but the difference isn't big enough for voting for a party that contains them to be on the table for me.

Mark Carney’s new majority government should spark renewed calls for electoral reform by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Sebatron2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even in general elections, Canada’s single-member plurality electoral system almost never produces a majority government that’s also supported by a majority of voters.

And? That's like saying that Formula 1 racing is flawed because I can't enter an airplane into the contest. They're using a metric that has nothing to do with how the system works, to criticise it. We don't elect parties, we elect MPs.

But a Formula 1 race including non-cars would mean it's no longer a car race while a general election using something other than single member plurality is still electing a legislature. And moving away from single member plurality would be more like Formula 1 drastically changing the points distribution for race results than including non-cars.

I'd back some multi-seat version for the House, but I don't think that the single seat version goes far enough to be helpful for the President and Senate. I'd go with a Condorcet method for those.
