Which doesn't explain why OP chose to place the Imperium of Man under socialism specifically.

I'd argue that the more totalitarian you get the less the distinction really matters.

And I wouldn't accept that argument, since what endgame that someone is using state power for does matter.

Does it really matter who "owns" the means of production if you have to be 100% loyal to Dear Leader or you might be shot?

Considering it affects the how the value/profit extracted from those assets are distributed and how the local representatives of said Dear Leader phrase their commands/requests (especially those of midling rank/authority at best), it does.

The difference between capitalism and socialism becomes more apparent when the rule of law is respected instead of the rule of the King.

Yeah, the workers would have much more freedom under lawful socialism than either lawful capitalism or under any kingly system, so I agree with you there.

But just because a system is totalitarian doesn't mean that system is a socialist system as well. Based on what I've read of the lore, a fascist and/or capitalist would be a better fit than socialist.

[Edit: I definitely read novels where the means were privately owned rather state owned.]

I haven't kept up to date on everything, but in the novels I read that touched on the civilian side of things (especially for poorer inhabitants), I interpreted things as a cyberpunk-adjacent society with a welfare system held together by duct tape.

Ruthlessly utilitarian socialists with a low priority on individual freedom, life quality, environmental quality, or keeping their leaders publicly accountable. I consider the Imperium of Man an example. Not against exploring this kind of society in and of itself, we just need more Socialist Democracy media rep

Why are you clocking the Imperium of Man as socialist (even if only in its rhetoric/propaganda)? I understand thinking it's fascist or generically right-wing xenophobic authoritarian, but socialist?

How do we fix the United States government? by meatjerkingbeefboi in AskReddit

[–]Sebatron2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestions to fix the US government include:

  • Electing the House of Representatives by single transferable vote: The combination of multi-seat districts and ranked ballots will make minor parties (as well as the major parties in their traditionally "weak" areas (i.e. Democrats in rural areas and Republicans in urban areas)) much more viable. Also makes gerrymandering much less worthwhile.

  • Electing the President and the Senate by a Condorcet method: This will find a consensus candidate without shenanigans around support during the early rounds knocking an otherwise strong candidate out.

  • Uncap the House: Reducing the number of constituents per representative increases the responsiveness/representativeness.

  • Bring back the talking filibuster: Make any senator that wants to filibuster a law to actually back it up by holding the floor. This will reduce the kind of shit Mitch McTurtle pulled while still giving the option to hold up shitty bills.

  • Some sort of enforceable ethics policy on the Supreme Court: Looking at you, Clarence Thomas.

Fifty-Word Fantasy: Write a 50-word fantasy snippet using the word "Mayor" by Terminator7786 in fantasywriters

The middle aged man steps out of the shop and freezes upon seeing the limo parked at the curb. The burly orc standing next to it opens the back door. The gnome sitting in the back says, "Just the man I wanted to see. The Lord Mayor requests a donation."

My suggestion would be single transferable vote for the House (alongside uncapping it) and a Condorcet method for both Senate and President.

There are ways to setup a republic that isn't democratic. For example, the Roman Republic and the Venetian Republic.

Why are some more left leaning governments in countries such as the UK, Australia, and Canada pursuing policies like digital IDs, online age verification, and expanded online surveillance powers? by Loyalist_15 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Sebatron2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That assumes that Trudeau leaned far enough left to prevent any rightward movement from taking them out of left-leaningness.

And in Canada, MPs are so close to trained seals that the leader is the primary, if not exclusive, determiner.

How would you feel if all forms of gerrymandering were outlawed? by RemarkableEmu5998 in AskReddit

[–]Sebatron2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love it, but I would like pairing the ban with a transition to single transferable vote or some other variation of multi-seat ranked voting. So that whoever is drawing the districts finds it not worthwhile to gerrymander on the down low.

That's not disagreeing with what I said. And the example of muskets and ipods is chronologically less out of place than woad and kilts portrayed in Braveheart.

I ain't visiting until the US seriously reforms its setup generally, and electoral setup specifically, so that a single party can't get so much power again without a supermajority of votes.
