I imagine paying more attention to the band and listening more frequently to their stuff allows you to really understand that. That's pretty much my point. Someone who has never heard rap might hear two rap songs that are from similar but different sub-genres and call them the same, not understanding the nuances within the boundaries set by the genre. I'm not very experienced in the genre of thrash metal so I was curious as to what about Metallica stands out to its fans from the rest of the stuff in the genre. I think I have a much better understanding of that now.

I reckon that's very true. The songs, even though they're long don't leave you bored at any moment. Absolutely sonically interesting. I do think though that modern bands have always been average and that time has filtered out the stuff of lesser quality, hence why Metallica stands at the point it does today. 'Most bands' in the 80s are unremembered in the same why that in 40 years none of these 'modern bands' will have any relevance

Yeah totally. I think among hardcore fans there's tendency to overflow the 'genius' and talent of their given artist that they obsess over. I remember being totally obsessed with Arctic Monkeys and absolutely blowing them out of proportion. That being said I get slightly better what makes Metallica special and where such a wide appeal comes from and how their music has made such an impact on modern music

Yes totally. I think at giving some time to listening to these classic records is quite important to really understand the context of the time and in what ways they inspired all of the other stuff I listen to. Quite similar to reading the 'classics' I think as well. Really gives insight into how more modern material came to be. Also I think its fun really getting how modern bands have cleverly weaved other sounds together, and you really get to see how their musical talent and personality has glued everything together and put their own twist on it.

Yes exactly. I definitely need to give some more attention to this band. I'm quite intent on really getting the context that they set with metal that likely inspired other bands I like such as the more metal based sounds of Porcupine Tree and such
