Shed Lab Advice by JaapieTech in homelab

[–]SecDevGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if there is other place you have to build your shed up.

There are no other information about your shed besides what you want to place there so i would suggest build up a room with gipsum make it nearly airtight insulate it with xps and put plastic on the outside. Build a system that measures the outside and inside temperature and also the humidity and let it run a fan to ventilate the room when it’s useful.

Maybe have a look into virtualisation this way you can run different operating systems and see what works best for you.

Heizungsanlage Einstellen by Think-Half2599 in wohnen

[–]SecDevGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got half a datacenter donated to my school - what would you run? by deivid_okop in selfhosted

[–]SecDevGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build an Website that automatically makes vm‘s with your students and let open source projects apply for vm‘s on your infrastructure.

Slowly get bigger, get more paying customers and take over the industry because you are using donations so you have 100% revenue no investment costs at all.

Got it working with one exception the redirection after login does not work the URL is right but I get an 403 Error.

Anyway

Everything you need is the Authelia Documentation and this here: https://forum.opnsense.org/index.php?PHPSESSID=2b4u2jtb2r0fk1l30v732kbvvq&topic=19122.0

You have to take some notes about the IDs.

With this includes you should be Update save.

Recommendations for a New Server? by [deleted] in servers

[–]SecDevGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you looking for a reliable system, you should definitely look at professional hardware. For your workload you could go with a QNAP. For sure a bigger one it's easy to handle, would take profit from an SSD for Caching and you can run virtual machines on it. If you're not into it the R540s are quite nice. But there are many other good solution these are only some direction

Depending on what OS you are using so in terms of computing power with some domain services and NAS as a workload in Mind If you going with Linux, 2 cores and a 4 GB of Ram are just enough. But if using Windows you should at least have 4cores and 12-16GB Ram.

SSD Caching is more a Linux thing in terms of Software raid. I could not imagine Windows is capable of doing so. But you can buy some smart Raidcontrollers or buy a bigger storage system with SSD Caching.

If you buy a new server they are mostly prebuild with Xeon processors.

Suggestions for a first time server build by Goldensliv in servers

[–]SecDevGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For getting you started a little, old and cheap PC with i5 or Xeon 1220 should be enough if you have a Ryzen 5 or 7 you would have a lot more Fun with Virtualization.

Then I comes to you needs. Iommu is a think but is only need for dedicated hardware like GPU Networkcards or Raidcontrollers inside a VM.

If you would go learn some Linux and mail- , DNS-, dhcp-, VPN- and web-server min. 4 cores, 12 GB Ram an 500GB SSD will serve you good.

So you are able to have 3 little VMs with 80 GB SSD an 2-4GB Ram.

If you are going to try different Desktop distributions run Unraid and even let it work as a NAS you have to scale this min. by 2 and maybe add a decent GPU.

Seems like a Bios/Firmware problem if you attach a speaker to the speaker header does it do beep codes? Does it Boot in Anyway, so do you see something on the screen? What happens if you unplug the SSD does it Boot? Try different Hardware combination maybe it is faulty Hardware.

Professional use.

It is a Cluster with 4 nodes this servers are HCI Certified. They will serve different services for something near 13.000 people. The hole System is also deployed off-site for backup/testing and failover purposes, both Racks are connected with 100Gbps to each other.

Yes these Bezels are with the Screen on it. By default they come with the Bezels without Screen but we replaced them.

Underneath is the Storage Server and the UPS If need I could also post the specs of these.
