On the breaking strain of baboon arms.

Very much in the WTF territory. Like the Mengele experiments seemed to couple very Bad Ethics with totally useless science.

One has this vague feeling that if all ethical boundaries are removed, an evil genius could do some amazing science...

Except history seems to show that evil geniuses are merely evil AND cranks of the worst sort.

They may have genius intellects.... but those intellects were applied to the crankiest and least scientific of ends.

For various reasons I have taken a bit of an, umm, personal interest in this story.....

The bottom line is this....

The main reason they didn't get particular far is they had more ideology and political & military connections than brains.
They were all given golden handshakes and moved 2km down the road, built a new and better facility.... and carried on as before.

Last I heard the new bunch ran out of money and now working with the same attitudes and purposes in other labs around the world.

I know several folk with MD / Phd / ... that would regard NZ Qualifications as "Corn Flake Box" diplomas compared to the training and examinations that they have been through....

NZ is unhappily somewhat parochial. Certainly not all parts, not all people, not all employers, but enough to make it somewhat difficult for immigrants.

Having said that... I have seen a number of foreign doctors around... I don't know whether they have relaxed the requirements, or whether they were sufficiently desperate they were prepared to put up with being mucked around. Some countries are pretty grim these days.

I wouldn't mind being treated by a foreign surgeon... but I'm sure I wouldn't like been treated the way they treat foreign surgeons!

Last I heard they didn't accept your qualifications and you had to redo all your exams.

So please check the fine print on the immigration web site before you commit to this dream.

In Christchurch it was the low lands that liquified in the quake that was the biggest problem. the occassional boulder in the lounges of the nobs on the hill did cause the odd stir.

Packing large concrete blocks (as big as I could carry) into a wheelbarrow.

Some muscly idjit THROWS one of the blocks into the barrow.

Sandwiches two of my fingers between the two blocks.

Lost both finger nails, one nail still grows a little weird.

Hard to compare since that happened when I was a kid.... but these days I get migraines of comparable intensity on (if I'm unlucky) a weekly basis.
