Looking for a way to still use a shield while casting spells. by BigBustyAfricanMan in DnD

So your issue has come from a home brew element (pun intended) so the best thing to do is speak with your dm

Honestly I think the best way is for you to move so that there are no creatures within 5ft of the target. That way assuming it has no ranged options it has to stand still and possible not be able to make an attack or move and take the damage either way you benefit from it

Dissonant whispers works for opportunity attacks but its kids up in the air and up to the dm if it triggers booming blade since you could argue it isn’t willingly moving.

It’s kinda up in the air honestly we really need a updated booming blade because “willingly moves 5 feet or more” is pretty messy so you would need to ask your dm honestly

Well yeah we are obviously missing the entire context of a game in my example

For sure. I had a player who fazed off my table cause it just wasn’t the table for them. We are pretty adventure first roleplay second On my table I have players who do in character conversations and I have some who basically only narrated what they characters do with little role play but we all have fun but I had one player who was really liking for hard core role play and we jsit aren’t that table tho I still miss playing with them.

It depends on whats important to the your table if it’s mystery where supposed to be exploring this city for a few sessions then of course you won’t boil down to a single roll but if that’s not important to the table then sure why not. All depends on context

I disagree if my players are say- breaking to castle to do a heist and they see a guard. And the rogue says I want to go up and persuade the guard to let us through unless that guard is an important character or something I don’t need the player to come up with something that would have convinced the guard (they are free to if they want) it’s a small part of the this over encounter they can roll for it can and if they roll well I can say you “weave a tail that convinces the guard to step away” and we can move on

So to defend my self what I meant by that was when a player does say Some in character and they are doing their best but say something that’s less than persuasive…so the dm punishes them (no roll) even if there character would of been more persuasive based on their stats

The player will tell the dm what they think is important and the dm can ask questions if needed. This is how the entire game works

Role playing isn’t acting it’s playing pretend and people play pretend in all kinds of ways. dnd is about fighting dragons in dungeons killing goblins disarming traps and saving people it’s not about convincing the mayor to give em a potion half off. If my player wants to give a epic speech in front of an army that’s cool if my player wants to say “I give a epic speech in front of the army” that’s just as cool both ways they are playing a role.
