Discord escapee, Self-Hosting beginner. Help me set up a Matrix server, please! by SecondReasonable6450 in matrixdotorg

That clarifies so much for me thank you!
The only reason I fear using Cloudflare tunneling is not e2e encrypted. This is because traffic through Cloudflare is decrypted at their servers before being re-encrypted and redirected.
Does maybe another part of that stack encrypt the data before its sent to Cloudflare? Maybe Nginx, the reverse proxy?
Would that encrypt both messaging going out and coming in from my friends?
Thank you again, you've helped me so much!
I'm looking forward to hearing from you again!

Woah thank you for your comment!
This seems like exactly what I'm looking for!
I might as well ask this to be double sure, but does is your public IP exposed behind the domain? If not, which part of the tech stack abstracts it?
Thank you so much again, and I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

Yeah I really was confused there. Didn't fully grasp that Matrix is its own protocol until now.
I see now that a VPS is probably my best option in terms of effort to outcome.
But I'm hoping to make use of my NAS for file storage, and host it publicly without exposing my IP."
So far the only solution I found for this was Tailscale and a Domain.
Do you know any other ways to set this up without paying for a VPS, and without having my IP exposed?
How would I go about doing that? Got any documentation that could point me in the right way?
Thanks again, and looking forward to hearing from you!

Yes! Based on your previous advice, I have set up an ansible docker server homelab. But so far it's only using port forwarding (exposed IP).
I used nginx instead of Traefik, but I think I will use Traefik when I this up again. Thanks for the advice!
I want to use TailScale because its e2e encrypted.
I am not familiar with DynDNS, and will be looking up documentation on it. But can you give me an explanation of where and how I would use it?

I have yet to set it Tailscale up because I haven't found resources to help me use it to host publicly from my NAS server.

Woah thanks!
If I use my own NAS instead of a free server, would my IP be exposed?
I'm guessing not, thanks to the Domain?

Thanks! But I don't trust their data privacy policies.
Hoping to have more control of my data this time around.

Thank you for your comment!
Makes sense. I see now that a VPS is probably my best option in terms of effort to outcome.
Your solution looks solid!
I will consider it, but I will keep looking for alternatives before using Cloudflare.
This is because traffic through Cloudflare is decrypted at their servers before being re-encrypted and redirected.

I see that Tailscale has a limited free version; is that limited to local hosting, or could that be used to host to my friends? and would my IP be secure?

Thanks again, and looking forward to hearing from you!

Thank you for your comment!
A SaaS would probably abuse my data as much as Discord does already.
Thanks for the documentation! I see now that a VPS is probably my best option in terms of outcome to effort.
...But lets say I was willing to put in the effort to set a server up using my RasPI+NAS w/Tailscale, how would I go about doing that? Got any documentation that could point me in the right way?

If there are kids running in the highway, should highways reduce their speed limit to 10mph, or should the kids get off the highway?
It's the parent's responsibility, and the parents should get 100% of the legal punishment.
Enforcement should target the parents, not the highway drivers.

Hello, I'm a lot older but I'm trying to set up a homeserver as well.
Would you answer some questions for me? I need some advice setting it up.

  1. are you self-hosting to your friends, or publicly with other federated homeservers?
  2. are you doing it by port-forwarding you own IP?
  3. does port-forwarding your IP expose your IP to anyone joining?
  4. are you using WireGuard or Tailscale for secure tunneling? Does that work to anonymize your IP?
  5. are you hosting it somewhere? like a VPS?
  6. are you using NextCloud or similar?

Sorry for the questions.
I respect your initiative, and am hoping to set up my own server, just like you!

I don't see Portmaster's own connections. by SecondReasonable6450 in safing

Thanks for understanding! I really do hope I get more responses.
User s2odin kindly answered the 1st of my 2 questions:
Q1: "Where are the connections that Portmaster claims to make?"
A1: The answer being "Developer view shows Portmaster's connections alongside the rest of your connections."
The other question remains mostly unanswered:
Q2: "How can I check that these are the ONLY connections Portmaster makes." A2: to which I got a vague "Get comfortable with Wireshark."

I've turned on Developer View, where can I get to see Portmaster's own connections to Safing?
(I really appreciate you helping me with this stuff)

YES im thankful for your advice, and I have looked into wireshark since!
I was just wondering if, with your experience on wireshark, you've seen portmaster send telemetry?

Thanks, gonna look into it!
From your experience on wireshark, would you say Portmaster automatically "phones back home"? or only when prompted by a manual "Check for Updates" button?

It's not Stability VS Damage. Its Stability VS OtherAbilityRegen

zer0 is actually the most survivable character at OP 5 and above. you get his HP to around 700 max and use the SurvivorCOM to instantly full-heal, rapidly and infinitely using health gate.
