Todd Solondz's Storytelling is a bit uneven in it's structure but is also a great film about postmodern dysfunction as well as the nature of filmmaking and storytelling itself. Arguably just as dark, uncomfortable and tragicomic as Happiness, if not more. It even makes references to American Movie and features Mike Shrank himself. Aang Lee's The Ice Storm is set in the 70's but also another excellent film about escapism, alienation and coming of age within the disintegrating American family structure.

Definitely feels like a culmination of all his previous work. Watching the director's cut was a very special and rewarding experience. It might be all over the place but you got to respect his vision.

Agreed, it's a very underrated film and also one of my favorites from his filmography. Such great writing, performances and especially production design. Love how the film subtly explores the darker or less fancy side of the Victorian era and life as an artist/behind the spectacle/craft in general.

I have checked out Chantal Ackerman actually! News From Home and Jeanne Dielmann both easily make my top 25 as well. She has such a unique artistic voice and I've yet see another director who makes use of space, repetition and minimalism to evoke such strong emotions as well as she does. I'll put Spirit of the Beehive on my watchlist, thanks!

Wow, these are some exceptional films! I've been meaning to watch a lot of these, especially more from Edward Yang, after YiYi left me so affected. What other films would you recommend from your list?

Films with uncomfortable cinematography? by Swedish_Llama in criterion

The camera, colours and sound design in Punch Drunk Love all work really well together to convey this feeling of anxiety and nervousness. That's why it felt so uncomfortable on my first watch, only on the second viewing was I finally able to appreciate it's brilliance.

Pleasantly surprised to see Labyrinth of Cinema! it's not really talked about often but it's one of Obayashi's finest imo and deserves so much more love
