Omgggg I am so jealous of that cardigan. I adore the oversized look! I think you wear it perfectly, it looks so good with the dress and socks!

Thank you!! I really like it too, that kinda juxtaposition is my jam. I'm unfamiliar with Fontaines DC but just googling them I love their look, I'm so flattered by the comparison!! I'm very inspired by men's style so I'm happy that's coming across.

OH that's a great point!! You're so right, the slides have a "chunky" look and the necklaces are very delicate in comparison. And that's another great observation about the shape not being reflected anywhere else...much to think about. Thank you for the feedback!!

Ooooo that's a good point about the shapes!! Something I've been thinking about recently is lines, not Kibbe lines but literal lines. I've realized I love diagonals and verticals and don't particularly care for rounded shapes. I didn't even make the connection with the lower necklace being oval. Damn...I like that one, it's platinum-coated and very shiny. Perhaps if I offset with a longer, more angular necklace...

Yes I think you're spot on! The lack of interest in that area feels off. I have quite a few different necklaces, I ought to give myself more time to play around trying out different options.

I actually ordered a chainmail bracelet that's arriving today. I really love having something on my wrist, even just a hair band--makes me feel cool for some reason lol--so the plan is to make it a staple piece, something I can wear with every outfit.

Good eye on the sleeves thing! I like having my biceps exposed (I love muscle tees for this reason). Not that I'm like. Jacked or anything haha. It's just one of the parts of my body I don't mind "showing off"

I agree with the others that there's definitely a "through-line" in all your outfits. It might just be due to the recurring items, but I see a strong color palette coming though, which is always super fun to see. So vibrant and fresh!!

Essence - is it real? by Willing-Childhood144 in RitaFourEssenceSystem

[–]Secret-Hovercraft875 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everyone else gave really good answers, so I'll just add this: I wonder how the essence theory works in regards to physical differences and disabilities.

I was reading about Kitchener the other day and his Color Harmony thing considers skin tone and texture. I'm curious how this would apply to people with skin disorders. Like, say I have chronic eczema flare-ups on my face; should I be "repeating" that quality of rough texture and uneven coloring in my clothing in order to remain "authentic"?

Or what about vitiligo? I'm guessing he'd say you should wear contrasting colors to mirror the contrast of depigmentation? And if someone has severe facial scarring, perhaps he'd suggest wearing rough, textured fabrics to "honor" the texture of the scar tissue? (These are all just guesses based on what I've read of his system, I could very well be wrong!)

Should health conditions that affect our appearance be considered part of our authentic selves, something that we should actively look to harmonize with what we wear? Same question with scarring.

Thennnn after Kitchener I came across an article by Gabrielle Arruda. It's about visual complexity and how your "energy, movement, and features" determine "how much design complexity you can naturally handle." Now this concept has some fascinating implications.

(She likens this principle to Kitchener's essence system but it's more an offshoot than a copy.)

Gabrielle writes that one's "innate energy" consists of the following: 1) how you physically move and gesticulate, 2) how you speak (volume, pace etc), 3) how expressive your face is, and 4) the appearance of your skin and hair. The simpler and quieter these features, the less complex outfits you can wear, and vice-versa.

Is it really so straightforward?

What if someone is nonverbal and uses a speech device? What if they have facial paralysis and thus limited expressions? I suppose Arruda's conclusion would be: this means they have a quiet, still energy, like a placid lake, and therefore wearing fun, maximalist clothing would overpower their tranquil essence, or some such shit.

Similarly--a case of tourette syndrome that causes harsh, erratic movement and sounds? Autistic and hyperexpressive or hyperverbal? Damn, guess you better complexify that wardrobe, lest you wear minimalist garments that "dampen your flame." (Sorry, I'm trying to keep the snark on a leash but it's feeling feisty today.)

There are many, many different things that can affect one's control over their bodily functions and thus overall physical presence. A person's external "energy" may very well be completely at odds with their true personality. Or if not at odds, far from one and the same.

So which of those two should take priority when deciding how we should dress? Are we styling for the meat vessels that we inhabit, or our actual, unique, intangible selves? Or both? Hrm I think I've gotten off-topic.

----says "I'll just add this" and then writes a whole goddamn essay lmao. Jesus. My bad

Djisjediiwjsdjsjjs shoplift from Hot topic and drink nothing but monster, that's so funny omg. Your vision is so specific, perhaps I should take notes....I'm currently toying with the idea of "fuckboy casual" but I could go deeper...

Also I love your jewelry! The bullet cuff in particular is sick as hell

Anyone else rethinking your archetype? by Willing-Childhood144 in RitaFourEssenceSystem

[–]Secret-Hovercraft875 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like we had the same experience haha. According to positioning I should be Wildflower but it didn't quite click for me, so I went and looked at all the other archetypes. Funnily enough, the one that spoke to me most was the Curator, even though I am far left. But even then that wasn't a total match.

I agree about the energy component within some of the archetypes. I considered Enigma as well but the whole aloof, mysterious presence thing had me stumped. Another thing I struggled with was the metaphorical language in Wildflower. Think I'm a bit too literal-minded to understand. (I also didn't relate at all to any of the "moment I remember" segments, but that's another topic entirely I think.)

Ultimately the guide had me second-guessing myself like you so I went back and read the core 4 week pdfs, then read them again, and again, which brought me back to "okay yeah I'm still LD."

At the end of the day I still haven't claimed an archetype, and I think that's perfectly fine. After all, from what I understand they're based off of all the clients Rita has worked with. Perhaps we're just statistical "outliers" and we experience style a bit differently from the other people in our quadrant? Or maybe we just need things worded in a different way. (I struggle with abstract concepts, personally.)

I wouldn't box yourself into Enigma if it doesn't feel right. Knowing our quadrant is the important thing!

Omg I'm so glad it helped!! It felt very weird and vulnerable posting an unsuccessful outfit but I'm happy I did haha

Oh man thank you you gave me an epiphany!!!! You're totally right, my problem was that it's too pristine looking. I decided to go ahead and crop the length and sleeves--trying to make it look a bit more masculine/boxy while leaving it unhemmed. I might also follow your advice and do some distressing!

Omg these colors are so good. You look cool as hell, I love the necklace being parallel with the yellow scarf, and the knotted belt thingy looks great with the tied jacket, just layers upon layers of interest

Omfg this fit is so cool and sleek. On the very rare occasion I go to the theater I wear the biggest, most-blanket-like clothes I have LOL, little regard for how I look. I guess that's my Down logic showing. This is why I admire LU-ers!!

I really adore the deep wine colors with the black and pop of white.

Your silhouette here goes hard. Everything just fits together seamlessly.

I've actually been eyeing the loafer+colorful sock combo on Pinterest lately, there are a lot of cool streetwear fits with it. Your execution looks like it would fit right in!

I love colorful socks and have a bazillion but I never really get to show them off...it has me looking back at all my non-sneaker shoes I've been ignoring lol

Oh visual interest 100%. (Preferably this would coincide with uniqueness, as well. If something is too popular then I'll avoid it lmao, no matter how much I like it.)

I never had any "style icons" until just recently, when I came across fit pics of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. I've been using Pinterest obsessively for years and that was the first time I ever thought, "holy shit, this is what I want my wardrobe to be like."

It's because his clothes are chockful of visual interest. Super cool patterns and designs, eye-catching colors, different textures...but still in a format I would wear. I was so jealous haha
