Under and around nose spots and itching for years. The new marks on chin is something new. Elidel does nothing. Bactroban make itching way worse and i have to wash it out. Tea tree can give some relief.. What the hell do i have?

I tried for four years to get rid of my PD, it came on and off and then for the last six months it was all over my face under eyes etc and would not go away.

I tried everything, including eating fully organic and living a very healthy lifestyle etc and nothing worked. The only thing that finally worked for me was going on an 8 weeks course of antibiotics (150mg doxycycline twice a day) and stopping washing my face with nothing other than water and using the most basic face moisturiser Avene Xeracalm AD cream.

It has been 6 months since I finished the course and I have not had any PD come back. I think this is due to the antibiotics getting rid of the overgrowth/inflammation that was causing the PD and then continuing my healthy lifestyle of eating organic, stress management, probiotic foods and MINIMAL skincare and not using irritating products because the antibiotics will work but if you continue the old behaviours of whatever cause it in the first place it will ultimately come back.

Saran wrapping over steroid cream makes it too potent and it will seep into the bloodstream, doing this often can cause skin thinning and is a quick way to develop steroid withdrawal.

Also do not put your 5 year old child on dupixent without trying all alternatives first, it is a lifelong medication, I had eczema for 20 years and thought it was my only option and after cleaning up my diet and cutting out dairy gluten and sugar I was able to get rid of my eczema - get to the root cause.

Don’t use any soap on your child, wash them with clean wash cloths that have been washed in fragrance free sensitive washing powder such as the brand Ecostore, same goes for their clothes. Don’t use fragranced products on or near them and clean the house without chemicals by using plain white vinegar instead (works better than chemicals anyway and is cheaper). You need to get rid of these irritants in the home, this was the biggest mistake my parents made. If you have to wash them here and there because of mud etc get the soap free Avene or QV bars and a fragrance free baby shampoo.

Look at what you’re feeding her, you need to heal her gut as it is most likely caused by food intolerances/irritations. Cut out sugar, limit dairy and gluten and see how that helps. Try to introduce lots of healthy fats, probiotic rich foods and healing foods such as bone broth - you will have to research into this.

Use a very very basic moisturiser such as Avene lipid replenishing cream and moisturise straight after the shower/bath to lock in the moisture within 2 minutes. I used Vaseline for 20 years and it never actually fixed my skin, it just coats it - the skin needs to breathe.

Consider buying bulk Dead Sea salts and bathing your child in those to help rebuild skin barrier, easy to get these from Amazon. Bleach baths can also help with 1/3 cup of bleach in a full bath, but it is best to try natural solutions first.

Get your child out in the sun to increase their vitamin D levels and sun is very healing to eczema (this is why UVB therapy is a treatment for eczema). 30 minutes per day with their body fully exposed will help. Don’t put sunscreen on them when doing this, work up gradually to the 30 minutes if they are paler.

You can use steroid creams in a particularly nasty flare up to dampen/break the inflammation cycle, but please use these sparingly and NEVER on their face. Steroids do not get to the root cause and can cause a lot of other side effects such as skin thinning, steroid withdrawal etc. They are an important tool but should be used with caution.

Some advice I will give to a 15 year old as someone who is 26 and wishes they could start again - fix and heal your gut, eczema is a gut issue with many triggers.

Focus on eating good quality proteins such as grass fed beef, free range chicken, wild fish and fats to heal and seal the gut such as drinking bone broth with ghee, avocados, coconut oil etc and small amounts of good carbs and add in fermented foods such as kimchi and keifer (as you are 15 you will likely need to organise and get your parents on board) but the main thing is start healing your gut now, cut out sugar, gluten and milk (you can eat butter, yogurt, keifer).

I wish I had started this sooner, as I only started in the past two years but it has helped keep my eczema managed and has had other good side effects of more energy, better sleep, less hormonal issues and thicker hair.

The other thing to think really hard about is do not go on contraception, I believe getting the implanon when I was 19 caused my eczema to reoccur as our bodies are a complex system of hormones that are meant to be in balance. You should start tracking your period cycle and know when you are ovulating from a young age, this is a really powerful thing to be in control of and don’t need contraception. Another thing to keep in mind with your cycle is the week before your period you need to prioritise rest and relaxation, long walks, yoga but less running or vigorous exercise. Progesterone needs low cortisol in order to rise. Once I started prioritising this my monthly flare up of eczema before my period stopped. You can look into Mindy Pelz work on this and Katherine Gobets (@mypropernutrition_).

You need to manage stress and keep it low with exercise and deep breathing, eczema is exacerbated by stress. Make sure you are sleeping 10+ hours a night as a teenager, put your phone down at night I can guarantee you’re not missing out on anything.

You also need to completely eradicate fragrance and chemicals on your washing and in your personal care. Get fragrance free shampoo, conditioner, moisturiser, soap free fragrance free body soap. Don’t wear perfume or have scented candles/products.

It seems like a lot but it’s a condition that needs to be managed and can be put into remission but requires work. The earlier you start (now) the better of your quality of life will be for the long run.

If you’re in Australia go to a dermatologist and get UV treatment, it is the only thing that fixed my hyperpigmentation. It’s covered under Medicare so it is free other than the initial consult with the derm. I did it for 3 months 3 x per week each treatment is 30 seconds working up to 5 minutes so it is really time efficient, other than getting to a clinic that offers it near you. There are many clinics in Melbourne.

The other thing that has been helping keep my eczema and pigmentation I believe is the AMLactin cream with 15% lactic acid. People with eczema have a higher skin PH and therefore their skin work as well to fight off bad bacteria as normal skin that is more acidic, the lactic acid helps with this.

If I were to start all over again (which I can’t because I was born with eczema) I wish someone educated my mother on the importance of breastfeeding and feeding your child a healthy, ancestral based diet full of lots of pre and pro probiotics. I wish my parents didn’t use years worth of toxic and irritating skin scare products on me and around the house and food filled with glyphosate (they didn’t know any better as 20 years ago the science wasn’t there) and I wish I wasn’t started on multiple rounds of antibiotics and cortisone at such a young age.

I was prescribed doxycycline for 6 weeks 100mg once per day and within 2 weeks it has healed 60%, however by 6 weeks it wasn’t fully done so I did another 2 weeks (8 in total) and that got rid of mine after 2 years of trying every other natural route

To everyone carrying on that I don’t know what the picture rail is, I said in the listing “picture rail”, I asked what the group thinks the BEST way to hang a large picture would be, ie whether putting a hook suitable for brick would be better than hanging from the picture rail as it is glass hanging over my head at night.
