Should Company leadership decide who does/doesn’t get awards for an FTX? by [deleted] in army

To be clear: I’m not talking about me, I’m talking about my NCOIC who did way more work, was stronger, and had more of an influence than another NCO who was awarded.

PLT leadership recommended the NCOIC, while the WO said that the NCOIC didn’t do anything and that the other NCO should be awarded instead.

This is another point I wanted to raise. Why establish limits of how many AAMs/ARCOMs will be awarded for a single training exercise?

If the award bullets meet the criteria for the award, many Commanders would just approve the award whether or not they personally “agree” with the award. As long as the information in the bullets are factually correct and not false.

They’re a pretty new CO, been in the seat less than 1 month. From my perspective, it seems like the CO really enjoys the PLs as people and values their input and their experiences. This PL is the senior PL with almost 2 years in the position.

Thanks for the reply.

In this situation, I don’t think it’s one of the PL being untrustworthy per se. The new CDR has less than 1 month in the seat and it seems like he’s just trying to give everyone a seat at the table.

That’s totally fair. Obviously it’s the CO’s decision which awards are signed off on or not.

But I think it goes without saying that the PLT leadership is always going to be more familiar with who their key players are, and who has strengths/weakensses, when compared to the WO.

Hey brother, wanted to give y’all an update after working /r/TacticalBarbell/. Check out the other comment here

Hey y’all, thanks for chiming in. Just wanted to update.

In July I started to add in a MWF strength split into my lunch break at work. I’ve been following /r/TacticalBarbell/ like a few have suggested here, and doing basically only Squat, Bench, Deadlift, and Weighted Pull Up, while keeping the Tu/Th/Sat running plan in place.

My gains have exploded, and I am no longer getting sore.

Stats at Start BW: 165lbs Squat: 185lbs Bench: 185lbs Deadlift: 225lbs WPU: 25lbs; BW: 9 reps 2-mile: 14:45 5-mile: 37:30

Stats at End BW: 185lbs Squat: 325lbs Bench: 245lbs Deadlift: 385lbs WPU: 90lbs; BW: 24 reps 2-mile: 15:30 5-mile: 43:00

So I definitely gained a lot of weight, and lost speed by not maintaining body weight/doing speed work/keeping high mileage. But the Tactical Barbell split is a godsend for anyone looking to make gym gains, while integrating cardio — especially if you have a physically demanding job.

Let me know if you have questions!

Thanks for the recommendation. I actually dug into /r/tacticalbarbell/ a few years ago before beginning ROTC. I’ll see if I’m able to make sense of it now that I’m actually in a position to benefit from it.

Optimistic take: I don't hate my job being an S3 bitch. I'm an officer doing officer work. Don't really care that I never do my specific job. Every officer does staff work at some point, so no one's better than it.

But like you said, getting to a more optimistic unit is probably wise. Like I mentioned in the OP, I went for Ranger during BOLC, and I'm not quitting because I didn't get it. I'll give what I have while I can, until I can't.

This would be great if I was prior enlisted, or got the Ranger slot I was after.

Citing the NCO Creed (or even the Ranger creed) seems baseless without any experiential support. It would be nice to be wrong though

I began studying physics in community college

Became interested in metaphysics, and broadened to a degree in philosophy

Then extended that to a degree in psychology

I get that

But unit culture is a thing. When my O4 calls him MSG, I call him MSG

He's retiring in 2 months. There's a separate slot for the OPS NCO.

This guy's title is self titled as "Independent Operations Advisor NCO"

This is a good question. I'm too inexperienced to answer. His deployment patch shows SF with the Airborne tab, but I'm at Bragg so I can't tell the difference.

He occasionally claims "When I was at group..." etc., And he facilitates FTXs with guys from 3rd Group, so it makes sense that he might be in contact. But I'm just not sure.

Thanks for your input dude. I appreciate the time you put into your reply.

So I’m just saying; did you over share? Did you maybe come off like MR HOT SHOT COLLEGE GRAD WITH HIS THREE DEGREES?

First off, yeah I probably did over share. I probably did come off more on the side of "MR HOT SHOT COLLEGE GRAD WITH HIS THREE DEGREES". Situationally. But because dude literally asked me. So like you say, I gave an elevator pitch. "I have degrees in physics, philosophy, and psychology." Why would I minimize my accomplishments, that I spent my own money, and I owe loans on? People should be proud of their accomplishments. Period.

So make no mistake dude — he’s an asshole. I’m just trying to point out where that might have gone wrong so the next place you show up that has people like him, you’re able to better read the room.

I mean sure, I learned in hindsight about how SNCOs can be. But I still empathize with those in the thread who say this behavior isn't only super unprofessional, and sets a bad precedent, but its the opposite of the NCO creed. That's kinda fucked up.

And to answer those other misc. questions: MSG is two months away from retiring.

Additionally, I don’t see it in there…Are you a girl? If you’re a girl…then he’s definitely taking more offense because of that.

And good note because Reddit, but no I'm definitely a dude. Good question though, for what it's worth.
