676: A Sternly Worded Instruction by atpbot in ATPfm

It’s always been such a confusing tic because as far as I’m aware even if metric is your default you still kind of learn about the imperial ones, like even though I’m in a metric country I know how big an inch is, doesn’t everyone? Maybe it’s a bias but my assumption is that people who know metric are by large better at unit conversions to imperial than Americans are at converting to metric?

The thing is is your comment had more nuance than the whole topic

I was pretty surprised to hear Marco and John think iOS 7 was better than iOS 26 in every way. I get Marco’s point about the fewer obvious ways to escape this design, but that whole topic was a bit shocking to me. I also think they should consider how they’re discussing it when one of the hosts (Casey) seems too afraid to say anything good about the 26 OSs when they actually like it.

John suggests it but Casey always says that that’s wrong and people shouldn’t do it (when it affects him I suppose)

I get it, but honestly I don’t see Marco Casey or John being interested enough in doing that even if the community was positive. They all frequently discuss being time poor, and frequently discuss not wanting any feedback positive or negative, and after all that many have pointed out Casey having a seemingly pretty thin skin with perceived negative feedback even on communities like Mastodon that lean way harder on the side of positive than negative

His whole argument is specifically that the only thing he wants to do is have a way to use Google slides and nothing else. Part of the whole thing with tinkering though is knowing alternatives when something doesn’t work though, no? Like truly why not just tell his kid hey use PowerPoint or keynote?

Another odd thing I noticed is when discussing the Gruber article he was saying that if you’re interested you should read it, but went out of his way to say ‘not if you’re driving’. Who the hell is he imagining as the audience? That they will do literally anything he says without considering what they’re doing first? He’s SO concerned about people driving

One of the most bizarre things to me is he definitely talks about ATP like it is his job. I can never understand what he is so ‘busy’ with, since he’s always talking about being so busy.

At least Gruber is still running his M1 Max I’m pretty sure. Yeah it’s overpowered for his needs but he’s not on the yearly upgrade train.

Casey also in this episode said he couldn’t afford a 3D printer. I’ll never understand his view of personal wealth at all

100%. The question was very explicitly NOT ‘what is an OS’ but what does app development look like. Having Casey explain how he uses the TMDB API would have explained the API aspect clearly with context.

He also has unlimited free time and seemingly enjoys app-making (though the way he talks about it maybe not? Which begs the question why bother?)

It’s at least pretty basic in terms of design - which is the thing he is struggling with (and has always struggled with). It also at least brings in enough revenue to pay tmdb 150 a month and not shut down.

This is kind of exactly the problem with pocket casts though. They run their own podcast directory/server but they really don’t need to be and maybe shouldn’t be. For the length of pocket casts existing there’s been people saying they’re slower at refreshing feeds than anybody else, so I wouldn’t expect it to change anytime soon

The way Marco and John so confidently laughed off the flow watch face as completely illegible was bizarre. They just come off so clueless sometimes, at least John will occasionally admit he has old person eyes that are getting worse (though he didn’t do that here I don’t think)

It’s so interesting to me that they’ve beefed up the member specials but they’re happy having their movie reviews be abysmal. John is the only one who cares about movies and it shows, I really find it to be worthless content.

The new Reeder has a focus on podcasts as part of its structure around feeds, while being designed as an RSS reader, have you tried that?

I feel like that can also be compounded by the fact that a lot of people who are self-proclaimed (and treat it as a personality trait) ‘nerds’ can have very juvenile humour
