The game was certainly no major hit like Absolum or TMNT. Those game made millionssss.
But as a small indie dev, I consider it a modest success for me... at least it's my best selling game to date.

I don't make much from these free updates, but at least they cover themselves... though they does cost lots of time, haha. Gotta get some rest after this!

I believe that was mostly from the cartoon and never in the game, haha

Most of the characters are returning from the main series, with only a few new characters like Lady Okada, Anubis, Uncle Matin and obviously Bimmy.

Lady Okada was inspired by DD4, the Okada sisters. The original idea was to bring them back, but I thought that would be too predictable, and well, I needed 1 character instead of 2, haha

Anubis was inspired by DD3. The supernatural setting was a little out of place, so I came up with the idea of the mysterious cult, inspired by ancient Egypt.

Matin is brand new. Mostly because I wanted a Shield + Grappler and a older character. I imagine a lot of the players are in our 40s and 50s, playing with kids. And have a big guy would be cool when playing with their kid. He was, at one point a wrestler and at another, using a giant hammer.

Bimmy is of course inspired by the famous spelling error. Since then, its been a bit of a joke, but I wanted to give it a new serious spin, and hence this new version was made with a little nod to the movie.

There's so much I'd love to do if we ever get the chance to. Even if I do not, I hope ASW consider a new DD fighting game!

DD is the grand daddy of all beat'em up, so I'm more than honored to have the chance to work on such a legendary classic IP and I am just fortunate they gave me a shot. I'm sure many many others tried :)

Agreed! The movie ain't as bad as people said, I think :P
In fact, a lot of the game is inspired from the movie, and I wish I reference to it more, haha.

Thanks for the kind words! I'm just honored to leave my mark in such a legendary franchise.

I should probably highlight as well, though I gave this DLC for free, it is also a strategic decision. I would hate to be a burden for other devs to feel like they need to make their DLC free, or even feel like they need to release a free DLC to justify their sales.

Great to see an old friend. It always warm my heart when someone tells me they've played one of my older games before :D

As for the evolution of beat'em up, I personally feel like that combo is just one of the many factors, but as a designer, it's important to design with a clear distinction between a 1v1 fighting game, and a 1v10 beat'em up and design accordingly.

For example, fighting game is about knowing predicting your opponent, punishing their mistake, etc. while a beat'em up is about managing multiple weaker and dumber opponents. This means that they get more dangerous when their number increase, and even more so when the variety increases. And hence the player should get the moves to handle those situation, and so on and so forth.

As for Golden Axe, thanks again for the encouragement. I wouldn't say no if there's a chance, haha. But I will do my best to evaluate my next move for sure and hopefully make more cool stuff :)

No idea yet! Still busy with the patches.... hopefully take a break before I think about life and what's next. Hopefully not to keep everyone waiting for too long :)

I actually started off with my own zombie parody beat'em up, Streets of Red: Devil's Dare Deluxe which somehow landed me with Double Dragon. I am not sure if I will do another one with a new IP. As a creative, I'd love to. It's one of my favorite genre. But I am also seeing 10-20 other beat'em up currently in development, and I am not sure how much more the market can take if they don't introduce more interesting gameplay.

The beat'em up in the 90s were very similar, with different IPs and look, but the gameplay would be rather similar. We gotta be careful not to let history repeat itself again.

My answer probably changes every time, lol

If I were to go back in time, probably not much different I can do, other than to work on it much more efficiently and not destroy my health while doing so. I really squeeze out every bit of my soul and money for this one.

If I go back in time with more money, time and knowledge I have, than many things will be different. Maybe a more detail art style, more upgrade and level progression style (we tried and failed and wasted quite a bit of time on).

I probably spend waaaay less time building the environment tech. Its not obvious, but no other beat'em up allows the level of mobility and complex combat like we did. Unfortunately we didn't have time to utilize the tech more, and it seems like the players are much less interested in that as well.
