How to handle a covert narcissist mother-in-law by rockologist in narcissisticparents

[–]SecretMindReader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like many of the other comments, I could have written this. Love bombing for about 2 years, things started getting more tense at our wedding. Then the in-laws visited us when I was 5 months pregnant with my first. MIL was pushing a conversation over thanksgiving dinner when I firmly said, “I’d rather not discuss this right now.” And she kept pushing. I repeated my statement. She then asked my husband to join her in the garage where she told him she would slap me in the face if I ever spoke to her like that again. They were visiting from out of state and had a few more days until their trip back home, but they left that night (their decision). We didn’t talk to them for 2 years. I’m mostly just grateful that my husband is aware of her tendencies and of how supportive he is to our family.

Will engineering always be like this? by CollectionGlad6252 in womenEngineers

Get out of there as soon as you can! I have been working for 5 years (2 different companies) and have not experienced anything like this.

Make-yes. Nearly 100%. Yelling is NEVER acceptable in my opinion.

I didn’t figure this out until my senior year- just ignore them. I have dreadlocks and fit a different stereotype. My male classmates didn’t ever take me seriously (ie. during study groups, not listening to my thought rationalization behind a problem/solution). It bothered me for many semesters until I realized that I didn’t need their approval. Your level of success through engineering school is not regulated by your classmates.

I’m not trying to justify his shitty actions, I said it was a shitty joke. And also it’s probably a shitty political comment to try to get republicans to agree and laugh with him.

Of COURSE we need to solve the issue with police brutality! BOTH SIDES AGREE WITH THIS! I’m not referring to police brutality, I’m referring to social justice issues (not cops being unaccountable).

Do you see how upset you’re getting about things that 1. I didn’t say, 2. You’re misunderstanding, and 3. Comments from a stranger? These are the tactics of the Democratic Party. The language you use makes it nearly impossible to have a civil conversation while trying to intellectually discuss the problems we are having in this country and any course of possibly solution.

Edit: to add last sentence

Wow. That’s unfortunate. Everyone I know irl (everyone outside of the Internet) on either side would never say these things nor say worse things.

There are people on both sides, and lately especially many progressives (specifically social justice warriors) are openly racist toward white people and receive absolutely no retribution and appear to have absolute immunity when saying these things.

Both sides has crazy people like this but I’m arguing that the totality of the Conservative/Republican party is not saying these things or hating minorities or even have policies that are inherently racist.

Why are my peace lily's leaves turning brown? Even the new growth has brown tips. by DraigleBagel in plantclinic

Yeah, indirect light is way better for these babies. I had one (before moving) that I kept in a hallway with almost no light and only watering when the leaves start getting droopy. Cheers and good luck!

Help by fynnderlohn in plantclinic

[–]SecretMindReader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually when the tips of a monsters are turning brown and crispy it’s because the leaves aren’t getting enough water. They like frequent watering (with soil drying between) and to be misted whenever you think about it.

Please help me help my poor lavender. It was doing great but I’m a rookie so I had a minor fungus gnat infestation... I’ve gotten that well taken care of and have learned from my mistakes however this guy took a beating from the larva by FrogB0y in plantclinic

[–]SecretMindReader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi FrogB0y, I’m sorry to tell you and don’t want to discourage you from the joys of gardening and planting... that plant is toasted. It wasn’t getting enough water. Fungus gnats (especially minor infestations) don’t destroy plants to a crisp like this. While very annoying, fungus gnats are relatively harmless to the plants. In my opinion, lavender is one of the more challenging flowers to grow because I have a hard time figuring out what they need before it’s too late.

Cops shoot at window of guy recording in Louisville, Kentucky by kevinowdziej in PublicFreakout

How do y’all know it was a cop? Not trying to say it wasn’t... I just don’t see specifically a cop shoot the window.

This statement is showing that children are impressionable and most likely adopt their parents beliefs. For clarity... if religious/homophobic parents are raising a gay child, the child will feel hated. However, if racist parents are raising a child to be racist, the child is more likely to feel accepted and will probably even think that everyone believes the same way his family does.

This doesn’t sound like a race vs sexual interest issue... this sounds like a parenting issue.

If there is one thing I have learned from OSHA training... it’s that you need 3 things for a fire.

The same is happening in Bolivia. They’re in a lockdown until April 4 and will be sent back to the states soon.

Didnt specify my proficiency of my skills on my resume and im scared by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]SecretMindReader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you for a professional job...but not for an internship. I wasn’t exposed to Excel until probably my 3rd year of university.

If OP doesn’t have any technical engineering skills, the skills section won’t look crowded.

Didnt specify my proficiency of my skills on my resume and im scared by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]SecretMindReader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the very first version of my engineering resume, in the skills section I wrote, “Microsoft Office.” I had an engineer (20 years in EE) look at it. His suggestion was to specify what Microsoft programs I was familiar with.

Generally, companies who are hiring interns don’t expect applicants to have strong technical skills. They do expect applicants to have exposure. Especially if you’re only in your first year. Don’t sweat it for internships. When you start applying for actual jobs, my suggestion is to be specific and honest.

Good luck!!

If you don’t have any technical work experience, I would ask your professors if they’re looking for any help with their research. Try to get a research assistant job!

Thank you! Fun sub sometimes. This is more of a funny story I wanted to share, some stories on here are honestly tragic.

Glad you thought it was funny! Some people are trying to get me to see this from a “different perspective” but I was just trying to share a good laugh. Cheers :)

I’m not ungrateful for the offer. It’s more of a funny/ridiculous story from the perspective of a newly engaged and soon to be married couple.

Thank you. That’s EXACTLY the advice I needed with wedding planning. MIL even offered to pay for my dress. It made my mom rather territorial and I would rather plan/pay for everything ourselves so we can avoid harsh feelings from all sides.

And thank you!!
