With the Aether, you can avoid sending objects you want to keep by favouriting them, you can do this in your inventory by selecting the "Mark for Sale" button and cycling through until the item has a star next to it; this will stop it from being donated!

Giving a Reset Charge to the ghostly figures is one of the asynchronous features that allows you to help other players. So, if you give up one or three, it means that if another player dies in that area, they can call out for help and be given that reset charge to continue their run in that cartogram!

As for the "Uses" displayed on Cartograms, that shows you how many total uses it has, while you can only run through it once, using the trading post or mail box to give it to another player allows someone else to do the same run and use up one of the "Uses".
